Eclipse is a game that, at first glance, can be intimidating. However, the instructions are easy to read, clear and concise, and full of pictures. The gameplay didn't have a lot of the extraneous things that 4X games tend to pack in, distilling gameplay down to what makes these games fun and memorable.Definitely recommend this game!

Played this as two player and like the different alien species buffs and the ability to start easy with Humans and easy enemies. So can increase difficulty with more players so real estate becomes the fighting ground. Or add the wormholes and difficult enemies to make it more of a challenge for the two players. The eight rounds make you consider all options for victory early on. But as enemies appear and your opponents empties out the tech you wanted from the tech tray, things can get dicey, especially when your losing money every round trying to keep your burgeoning population feed and watered! (Not literally, but via a simple math of how much did you spend doing stuff vs how many planets and orbitals are making you money.)Setup is pretty easy with each species ... MorePlayed this as two player and like the different alien species buffs and the ability to start easy with Humans and easy enemies. This game is fun. But the mechanics are deceptive. After about four plays, it seems there might be more luck than strategy in the game. You randomly draw sectors when you explore, you randomly draw reputation tiles after a battle, and you randomly draw which techs are available. And what you draw can have a big impact on your score. Also, many battles come down to who rolls a six first. So if you want a hard strategy game, you will be disappointed, but if you want an adventure in galactic history-making, you will love it, especially researching techs and upgrading your ships.

I have to start by saying I have not played twilight imperium but this is the best space game I have ever played. One of the biggest benefits for me is the lower barriers to entry like player count and it's very easy to teach. Despite the easy rules, it's still full of interesting decisions and that feeling of 4x that you would be hard-pressed to find in a better more streamlined package.
I purchased this game primarily as a space combat and exploration game that might scratch the same itch as Twilight Imperium but that I could play with just my wife and I (2-players only). I'd say it does the job. It doesn't have voting, but it's also refreshing to have less negotiation in everything you do. It's just different enough to make it stand on its own, and it's much shorter play time. Definitely a new favorite right up there with Scythe.
I have never played the 1st edition, so this review is only based on my experience with the 2nd edition.Eclipse is a great space-themed boardgame with medium complexity. Play time is said to be 25 minutes per player, but that probably won't be the case unless everyone is a veteran Eclipse player. The components are fantastic and come in trays to help organize everything. The trays also reduce the setup time significantly. The rulebook is well written and has lots of examples, pictures and several walk-throughs to fully explain all the rules and turn phases. With a few plays, the game runs pretty smooth and there's less checking of the rules.I do have a few minor criticisms: (1) The components have great production value, EXCEPT the player mats, which are paper ... MoreI have never played the 1st edition, so this review is only based on my experience with the 2nd edition.Eclipse is a great space-themed boardgame with medium complexity. These should have been thick with maybe some recessed parts to help hold influence discs and/or tiles. (2) The population tracks look super cool, EXCEPT the colors of the money and material production tracks are hard to distinguish because their colors are so similar. It would be nice if they were less similar.Overall, the game really captures the 4X space genre. You can explore distant sectors of space via wormholes, unknowing what planets or aliens you'll encounter. You can research new technology and upgrade your spaceships' weapons, engines, shields, and computers. You can produce resources from your population/economy. And of course, there's epic space battles! All the rules are intuitive and the mechanics make sense for this game. Highly recommended.
The game is incredibly balanced. The way the box and materials are laid out are a masterclass. Completely satisfied. On top of the game itself, it arrived ahead of schedule and will def order from this company again in the future
The first edition of Eclipse was one of my favorite 4X games: it had some problems with tech balance (partially fixed by expansions) but it was a solid game that I loved playing. This new edition is even better: The strongest upgrades in the first edition have been made more expensive or weaker, opening up a lot more viable ship builds. Many other tweaks to faction and tile distribution improve balance further. The game plays slightly faster, AND it even comes with trays for everything, cutting down setup and cleanup time.
I've been wanting E2D for a long time. Was finally able to grab it and was worried I overhyped myself, especially with this price point. After playing a few times I am glad I pulled the trigger. Easily in my top 5 and different enough from TI4 that I still would want to play both.Unique civ mechanics and one of the best tech tree systems I've played with. And I am pleased the community is active and providing many playtested variants! I am going to get this game on the table for many many years!
this is one of the best productions in a game that I have owned. I enjoy the game, which is the second printing. The game trays make setting it up simple and fast. this game would be a bear to get to the table without the inserts. We have played it multiple times and it is really easy to learn and a blast to play. In my top 5 games of all time.
