I was terribly upset, and just set the popper, kernels and all to one side. Well, today, my nephew (a major popcorn enthusiast) found the abandoned popper, and asked what was going on... When I explained what happened, he pretty much thought I was nuts, and that it was somehow "operator error." Well, he looked everything over, and decided it was just fine, and I heard the microwave door open, with the beep-beep of the time being set, with the start button being depressed.... and (boom!) I hear the near-explosion of the lightening storm going on, along with him yelling... (hehehehe) Sooooo, it really WASN'T (feminine) operator error after all.... Eventually, he put the kernels into a plain paper bag, along with some butter, and nuked that right up, and, amazingly, there were NO lightening issues that time. So, for whatever reason, as implausible as it may seem, the popcorn popper absolutely cannot SAFELY function for the purpose for which I bought it, and I now apparently have a somewhat strange plant holder that I didn't want or need. If I could rate this item any fewer stars, I would... My conclusion is that you should only purchase this item with extreme caution and skepticism.

Second and third times of back to back use resulted in much better popped corn yet you're not supposed to do that. Then there's the fact that only after a handful of uses, the red pretty layer melted on the microwave plate! See pic for proof. This is a worthless gimmick promptly returned for an air popper.

He came into my room to tell me that after following all the instructions, the very first few seconds in the microwave he heard a loud electrical crackle and saw sparks flying in the microwave oven! He immediately cut the power. My microwave oven has never misbehaved before at all. Good PopCorn maker

I bought this because I love popcorn, but I don't love the wax bags and other chemicals that come in those microwave popcorn packages. I ordered this with not so high hopes that it may actually do what it's supposed to do. I followed the jnstructions, put it in the microwave and set it for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I waited and nothing happened. I thought I had bought a dud. BUT, at about 1 minute it happened. The popcorn started to pop ! In the end it took 2 minutes and 45 seconds, but every kernel was popped. it was perfect. light and fluffy popcorn ! I have a big family, so I'm going to order a second one because the instructions say to let it cool before using it again. That way, we can alternate when making multiple servings of popcorn.

Just Use an Air Popper Instead
18 February 2024

I've used microwave poppers in the past, and never had a problem with them. Wish I still had them.If you're buying this online, you have to first understand this is very small. The amount of popcorn it will pop is at most two tablespoons of unpopped corn. An air popper will do a half cup at a time, which is four times this amount.I read and followed both the safety and operating instructions. Filled the popcorn up to the line, put it in the bowl, put the lid on, and then ran my microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. The instructions say if nothing has popped within two minutes, turn the microwave off. A few kernels had popped by two minutes, and by that I mean a maximum of five kernels, so I let it go to the end of the two and a half minutes. And there was a distinct burned smell in the microwave, so I didn't go any further.By contrast, my air popper would have finished a half cup of popcorn in perhaps three minutes, with no problems.I decided to throw out the kernels and just make the popcorn in the air popper instead. When I tried to melt the butter in the microwave, there were flashes of light and a sound so horrible it frightened the cat as well as me. Now I'm worried the microwave has been damaged and I'm going to have to replace it.My advice is don't take the risk, just use an air popper instead. Not worth it.

Mom likes it, too!
30 December 2023

Theres nothing to dislike.I bought one a few years ago on a whim, and it's used a LOT more than bought chips in our house now.put a single layer on the bottom, turn the microwave on, and wait for it to pop.It makes enough for two, but we really like fresh popcorn. There's a cool feature.you can place butter in the top if you want, and it coats it as it pops.I prefer dry popcorn with salt and other spices. We each make our own little pot.Convenient goes in dishwasher.I bought one for my mom, with the "Flavicol" she hadn't been able to find since the 80s.Shes happy with it.shes type 2 diabetic, so this is a light, airy snack for that wont run up her blood sugar.Smiles all around.(See, I can give agood review)This is worth the 10$ or so.

Nice design and snack size

I love our new Tasty Popcorn maker and we use it almost every day. It's so safe and easy to use even my kids can make their own popcorn for a healthy snack. No more buying the wax coated disposable bags since buying a jar of popcorn kernels is economically and environmentally better. The popper is made of glass which is much better than the silicone ones. It's dishwasher safe and doesn't require using oil because it’s air popped so no burning. The design is nicely made and the 3-1 lid is for measuring the right amount each time. And is used to place your butter or seasonings in it while making your popcorn. It's nice to know I can melt butter right in with the popcorn while popping by just adding a pat or two. While it pops the butter drips on the popcorn distributing it quite evenly. I did find that if I use cold or frozen butter it works better. This way after the 3 minutes is over the butter is melted not burned. You really need to use a turntable microwave for the best outcome. It's nice to be able to add some different seasonings like garlic salt or any other seasoning to the lid while it's making our popcorn. I experimented adding a caramel cube to the lid along with the butter it worked but was a bit messy. Because we sometimes want more we always wait until the popper is cooled down before using again. So, this cleverly designed practical popper is our new kitchen essential. It's safe, fast and easy clean up to use anytime.

Not durable or strong
17 February 2024

No issues popping Bob’s Red Mill White Popcorn. Typically finishes in 1:45 with about 10 un-popped kernels. My microwave is a 2008 GE Sensor model that came with the house. Truly, no issues popping. The popper is so fragile. The manual/instructions amplifies this with cautions and warnings of its fragility. No kids here but it’s not durable enough for kid use IMO.I would recommend this to someone who lives solo or with a partner. For larger households buy a different popper with larger capacity. Makes about 2 tablespoons of popcorn kernels. In conclusion, it’s a fragile, small capacity, popcorn popper — but it does work. So, it’s a very mediocre recommendation.

Too Small

This is the type of microwave corn popper for one person only and if they want a small amount of popcorn. Essentially, this is a large coffee pot with some plastic molding on the bottom. A couple of (uncooked) corn kernels is the maximum amount it can hold. Popped, it doesn't make anywhere close to a regular microwave bag of popcorn. Melted butter can be poured in at the lid, which is perforated. However, for someone like me, who likes to spray butter on afterward, this doesn't work very well. If a person does make a full pot of popcorn, it's difficult to add salt or any other toppings like cheese. I have used various devices to microwave popcorn. This item is by far the worst at leaving unpopped kernels. The highest percentage, anyway.Probably the biggest advantage this popper has is that it is made of glass. It was easy to clean, although finding a safe place to store it is no easy chore. So if a person likes a small amount of unseasoned and/or unbuttered popcorn, this may work for you. Otherwise, I recommend a person keeps looking.

It’s hilarious that some people are writing about how this “broke” their microwave. Probably in the same way the knife broke my skin or my mom’s computer broke her word document (problem exists between chair and keyboard).…It’s a BOWL! It’s essentially a tupperware that’s microwaveable with the lid on! with well thought-out design features like spherical shape (gives room to pop) and the multifunctional lid. The (safety) glass doesn’t heat much and cools down quickly. Many people don’t know that you can actually pop popcorn by just putting it in a paper bag (no oil) and fold/rolling the top closed. The container it’s in just needs to preserve the heat enough to allow for popping (and sufficient space). There’s no magic (or voodoo) behind the composition of this ... MoreIt’s hilarious that some people are writing about how this “broke” their microwave. The container it’s in just needs to preserve the heat enough to allow for popping (and sufficient space). There’s no magic (or voodoo) behind the composition of this bowl, and definitely no supernatural forces that will somehow harm your appliances. If your popcorn isn’t popping after 90 seconds (bowl or bag), definitely STOP the microwave. If it’s not popping, it’s probably the popcorn. Popcorn expires or gets dried out if not stored in an airtight container and will be less likely to pop and more likely to burn. Also stop the microwave when the pops are spaced out 2-3 seconds. And don’t try to repop unpopped kennels!! In this sense, a paper bag could “break” your microwave too if paired with the wrong popcorn (and wrong nuking operator). Also, if the popcorn is burning in the middle: this happens when it’s overcrowded in its container. Again!, NOT specific to the product- this can happen with overcrowding, no matter the container you are using. Keep an eye on how crowded the bowl gets while microwaving, if the popcorn’s starting to get too cuddly with each other, it’s going to char. Thou shalt experiment with quantity and be rewarded with tasty popcorn.Butter dispenser on the top is a nice design touch but I do recommend against it, as butter has a low smoke point and will be more likely to undergo structural changes (read: bad for health!), but I guess it’s not worse than those readymade microwaveable popcorn bags, so if that’s what you’re stepping up from,…Of course if this all sounds too complicated, you can always get an air popper but I love the simplicity of a bowl and the multiusage of the microwave.
