A Nice PC Speaker Setup
24 June 2024SM

originally posted on bestbuy.ca

My old speakers with sub woofer finally gave up the ghost and a friend recommended getting these. 3 weeks with these I'm very happy with the sound quality and don't miss the sub woofer.Music at high volumes comes through nicely. The speakers are heavier and a little larger than my old set and seem very well built.Very easy to set these up.- The way I have them set up the only thing that could have been better is having the on/off switch near the treble, bass, and volume controls rather than on the back but it is by no means a big issue.- I don't know why the volume knob on speaker can be turned forever as at first I thought it was broken, but that's just the way it is. Possibly it has to do with having a remote.

Fantastic and simplistic PC speaker setup for the price! I don't think there's anything for this price that sounds this good. One tweak that helped me bring out a little punch from these bad boys is buying a Dolby Access licensee for Windows, which is able to give you "virtual" Dolby Atmos. After some equalizing and tweaking there these sound so so good.Very simple to set up. I also got a 3rd party desktop speaker stand that angles it towards your ears. This is a must in my opinion to fully experience and enjoy desktop speakers especially for PC in my opinion. They also have an built in amp, so you don't need one. A DAC might help depending on your needs. The wood finish gives it a very premium look. All in all I'm VERY happy with my purchase, only wish it had ... MoreFantastic and simplistic PC speaker setup for the price! If you really need a sub, it's def possible to add it to this setup, however like I said it would be easier and cleaner if it had a sub output.

Better than I initially believed.

I'm not going to lie, I thought these things were going to be horrible toys. The wood finish and knobs on the side just reminded me of a cheap toy speaker that came with a generic PC. Yes, I saw the reviews of people saying that they were happy with their choice of these speakers. So gave it a shot because I was ready for a bigger presence on my desk than the Audioengine A2s(overpriced $250) that I had. The lack of more filling bass had reached its conclusion with those. So after failing to find any speakers that would go with my setup ( needed to find speakers that had dual RCA connections inputs)...I ran into these at best buy but couldn't test them until I got home. After I got home and first listened, I was totally underwhelmed and was ready to take them back. ... MoreI'm not going to lie, I thought these things were going to be horrible toys. After that, the sound started to fill in better and tilt gave it more life. I heard more spacious and directional sounds from them over the A2s and of course more bass, finally. Now I'm sure there are better bass tones from other speakers( I would give them a 7 out of 10 for bass quality) but having the convenience of the dual connection for my DJ Deck and my PC with a remote and separate EQ was starting to grow on me big time. It was so nice not to have to go to my PC or speakers to turn up/down the sound while mixing or having to pull out RCA cables for one, then the other when I was ready to use them. Before I knew it, I was sitting at my computer desk and starting to appreciate more and more with each hour that passed. At the end of the day, I would give this speaker set a 7.5 out of 10. There is beauty found in them for the right needs but they aren't game-changing and yes they could be better, but these are $119 and at that price, you are getting more than what you paid for. So at the end of the day, I believe that is the goal for any tech product, to give back more than what the owner paid for.

Extremely pleased with both Edifier AND B&H
18 September 2024

Ordered a pair of the R1280T's about two weeks ago from B&H and have been completely satisfied thus far. First off...the service from B&H was top-notch. I placed the order over the weekend. On Sunday, I received correspondence saying that my order was packaged. On Monday, it had already shipped. On Wednesday, it was on my doorstep (here in Northern NY). Package was perfectly wrapped with very secure materials. Upon opening, it was evident that the product was factory-sealed and in brand new condition.Installation of the speakers was simple and straight forward. I wanted something reliable and of good build and sound - I have been a Dj and audiophile for almost 3 decades now, so sound matters to me. So, what's my opinion?I like these Edifiers, a lot. I have been using them as my primary PC speakers. I have tested them with various genres of music, games and television. With them sitting on my desktop and directly on each side of my 37 monitor, (just below ear level and about 2 feet in front of me), I am awed by their range. A couple of times during gaming, I literally turned my head to the side because the effects seemed so real and I was looking for additional speaker sources that just weren't there. I can't say that the bass is overpowering, but it is perfect for the close-up setting that I am using. Voices are clear and I feel like nothing is missing acoustic-wise.For $100 and free shipping? I'd definitely buy these again if there was ever a need

GREAT BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS AT A SUPER LOW PRICE!

The Edifier speakers are absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!! The sound that comes out of them is beyond excellent. They also fit perfectly on my desk and look great. You will not find a better deal on speakers or better bookshelf speakers anywhere. The write-up on eBay stated that the speakers may have some scratches and so forth. This was NOT the case. The speakers I received were in perfect condition in the original box with all the plastic wrapping still on them. Except for the box probably having been cut open at the top, everything was in new condition and nothing was missing from the box. Great Reference Monitors for the $$$$

The R1280Ts have great sound, both in the near field and off axis. They are very accurate and articulate across their stated frequency response - all different instruments and voices are distinct, clear and clean. The high end has presence and clarity without harshness. Cymbals are beautifully reproduced. They excel at reproducing vocals, guitar, flute, cello and violin, etc. Bass is tight and very good for their size with an F3 of 75Hz. They do lack the deep low end of bigger enclosures and/or sub woofer - so no T. rex stomps or earthquake rumbles. These match up well with a Blue Snowball, or equivalent. For low frequency content like bass guitar, kick drum thunk, or if your guitarist does dive bombs into bass frequencies, they are adequate but not great. If your workstation requires audiophile monitors, and you can pony up serious $$$, then do that. Otherwise, these will do the job quite well for a lot less $$$.

I'm switching back to analogue. I've connected the R1280T speakers to a Nakamichi 670ZX studio grade cassette deck. The sound is vibrant, alive, and surprisingly neutral with the bass and treble controls dialed into zero (flat). The analogue source definitely helps. On the other hand, with CDs and MP3s the R1280T speakers reveal the digital, mechanical, cold sounding nature of the source. Actually, I'm not surprised. This is precisely what neutral speakers should do. They are true to the source, as they should be. If you are listening to a lot of digital source material a better solution would be separates: tube pre-amp, solid state amp, and passive speakers... but that's a lot of expensive hardware with takes up precious space. If you are listening to a lot of digital source material a better solution would be separates: tube pre-amp, solid state amp, and passive speakers... but that's a lot of expensive hardware with takes up precious space. In this price range the R1280T active speaker set is an elegant solution with sound that is well above average. I'm using them in a very small room, my source is a tape deck, and I'm happy with the sound. Now, here's what I hate about the R1280T speakers: All of the controls and the LED power indicator are inconveniently located. The power switch is on the back at the bottom. The volume, bass and treble knobs are on the right side of the right speaker, as is the green power LED. I find myself fumbling with a stupid, cheap remote control that can easily be misplaced. I would have preferred direct access to the knobs located on the face of the speaker and a clear indication that they have power. On the plus side, the bass and treble knobs are true rheostats, so they feel good to spin. The volume knob, unfortunately, is electronic/digital. They did this to make it work with the IR remote control. So, the bottom line is that the volume knob feels cheap and flimsy when you spin it.Top it off with fake wood plastic sides. The speakers are decent looking overall, but they're not going to win a fashion contest. If you're buying these it's because your willing to compromise in virtually every way except sound quality. Sound, I must say, is way better than expected. One final comment: There are two sets of RCA inputs on the back of the right speaker. One is labeled AUX and the other is labeled PC. There is no input select button anywhere, not even on the remote control. Why go to the trouble to manufacture dual inputs if you can't select between them? Presumably the sounds of the PC and AUX sources are blended together. I don't quite understand this. The instruction booklet does not mention this issue.Included in the box:- power cable (soldered into the right speaker)- speaker cable (1)- stereo RCA to stereo RCA cable (tape deck / CD player)- stereo miniplug to stereo RCA cable (ipod, etc)- IR remote control

Good fit and finish, they feel substantial and the treble, bass and volume knobs work smoothly. Speakers provide good audio for "bookshelf" type/size speakers. The option for either 1/8 inch jack or RCA jack connections makes these very versatile for many types of computers, audio devices, stereos/turntables and so on. The remote is a nice touch for volume control, and especially for the MUTE button. The only short-coming for me, was the relatively short cable length for the connection between the two speakers, meaning they have to be quite close to each other, and the also somewhat short double RCA plug cable to connect the speakers to my stereo, which limits how far away the "active" speaker can be located from the unit. These speakers definitely bring more than expected. They have great, but not excellent, sound. The bass is definitely much better than I expected, and I was buying these based from reviews and the price. The speakers are hefty, have decent magnets based by the weight and sound quality. Only downside is the equalizer on the side. I can adjust the bass and treble, and is fine except when turning either to the extreme positive end, you can hear the compression of the opposite. Meaning when turning up treble it's fine until it reaches the extreme + side, where you can hear the bass being cut rather than treble added, and the same is true for the bass.Because this is only at the extreme ends of either, I just keep them lower in my settings and they sound fine. ... MoreThese speakers definitely bring more than expected. These Are Great Speakers!

I did a lot of research, reading and procrastination before buying these. I should not have waited so long. They sound excellent. The clarity, the adjustable bass. They do sound better when angled up towards your face (if you have a lower desk), so consider a speaker stand for each one (I bought some rubber pads and added several to the front to get the right angle).I can't compare these to other bookshelf-style speakers in quality, but I do believe the other positive reviews are justified in their own comparisons. These are a great purchase and sound great at low volumes (which is good because I use them at work). The difference between these and every other "desktop" speaker system I've used is night and day. I'm happy I finally decided to make this purchase. Worth it for sure.
