A gutsy performer on slopes and flat

We couldn’t find much info about how well these electric mowers handle slopes, so we took the plunge and bought the EGO Power Plus POWER + 50cm Steel Deck Self Propelled Lawn Mower. (Until the end of July 2019 in Australia it has a free 5kWh battery as a redemption offer - that’s a great bargain as these batteries cost $350!). Boy, is this thing gutsy! I have been cutting through a paddock of wet weeds that we had let get out of hand and were typically 20 to 30 cm high. A bit higher in parts - certainly higher than the mower itself. The Ego just powered through them. Now, the side exit shute did clog up frequently, but I just poked it with a stick to clear it and off it went. I also had to frequently scraped out the wet grass from underneath. This clogging was not unexpected for such long wet grass, but it was much better in the dry areas. The manual emphasises that one should always mow across slopes and never mow up and down, so I didn’t (!), but just occasionally I had to take it up the 20 degree slope and it was no effort. It even gave me gentle tug up the slope! The battery lasted about 40 minutes. Not as long as I hoped, but the grass/weeds was very long and I would expect maybe 50 minutes in more normal grass. But the fast charger is fast, so swapping batteries (I have an existing 2.5 kWh battery - only lasted 10 to 15 mins), and then mowing some more, then a short break to finish recharging and I was off again. One thing I didn’t really expect is that this actually makes mowing fun - I was keen to get out there and just mow (press button and you’re off. No messy petrol, yanking stater cord, pushing heavy mower up slopes, etc.).BTW, I also have an Ego brushcutter and 35 cm chainsaw. These are also both excellent. The chain saw is also incredibly gutsy. The 2.5 kWh battery let me cut (buck) 30 cm felled tree into about 10 pieces before the battery went flat. That’s fine for occasional use, but having an extra battery is certainly handy. With the brushcutter I get about 25 minutes use.As you might gather, I am now a fan of Ego products! I found it hard to get detailed info about the mower before purchase, so I hope that this review is helpful to some.

Broke and then bad servicing

These mowers do seem to break-down a bit. With the limited moving parts, I thought some good durable design should lead to a durable electric mower. Sadly, I don't think that is the case with this design.Mitre10 throughout the experience provided a good experience and seemed to show genuine empathy. In hindsight, if Mitre10 and I realised it would have taken more than 2 months to get zero response from Ego, we would have just looked at the fact it had broken down inside of the 30 day purchase period and just done a Mitre10 refund (which is what we did in the end). They might be good mowers - but my anecdotal experience (33% failure rate) along with the bad support services has led me to believe I shouldn't risk purchasing an Ego product again anytime soon.

I bought this mower after doing lot of research on the choice of available petrol and cordless machines in the current market. This had the best specifications and I am glad I bought it.The mower is well designed and easy to handle. At 29 kg it has enough weight to handle my Buffalo lawn unlike some of the light weight cordless and it equates with the average petrol versions. The best thing is that it has key start and self propelled with variable speed control. I have a medium sized lawn and the included 7.5Ah 56v lithium battery will do my lawn twice on a single charge. The catcher is light weight and now it's more fun mowing. No fuss, no smell and not running out of fuel. Storage is easy with conventional flat or can be folded and left in vertical position. Out of the box, the mower is impressively well built with no assembly required beyond the fabric catcher, which takes just a moment. Eager to test drive, with the battery only half charged, I tackled my 800sqm block and could not be more impressed with the outcome. My chickens were dazzled by the efficiency in which the Ego cut through, and mulched their slightly overgrown green domain.I admittedly had some hesitation in purchasing a battery powered mower for a reasonably large domestic block in a subtropical Brisbane climate where lawns are high maintenance - having experienced the ease of use, capability and efficiency of the self propelled Ego mower, I would, without hesitation, recommend to others.I am looking forward to a relatively maintenance-free summer ... MoreOut of the box, the mower is impressively well built with no assembly required beyond the fabric catcher, which takes just a moment. Great machine.

The mower arrived well-packaged and was easy to assemble. I used it with the mulch function inserted and it worked perfectly. The self-propel function is great when going up the slope and just needs releasing the lever when turning.Cleaning is necessary as grass clippings cling to the undercarriage. I used a stiff brush plus kitchen all purpose spray and rinsed off with minimal water. Storage is a breeze as it folds up and can be stood vertically. The battery charger is quick and easy to use.

I had wanted to purchase an EGO mower around 15 months ago, but the minister of finance wasn't OK with the additional costs for a premium product....... So..... I purchased a competitors brand & I was never really happy with it's performance, cut height or built quality, but I owned it now, so had to suck it up.10 months later & the battery life was only about 30 minutes and the handle hinge was not holding, so back to them for a warranty replacement. Then I find out it was discontinued, so next thing you know, a full refund happens!!WOO HOO!! Straight to the EGO dealer and purchase a 50cm Steel Deck Self Propelled Lawn Mower & Graphite handle Trimmer!!Totally happy with the power, cut height & it's clearly built to last!Great product!! Highly recommend it!

I have mowed our sizeable lawn for almost four years now, week by week, and this mower has given me no problems at all. The 7.5 Ah battery is still up to the job and recharges in half an hour or so. The wheels tend to skid on our spongy lawn when in self-drive mode which is a bit disappointing and reduces that side of the application. Therefore, I would recommend the self-drive model for firm lawns only. Otherwise full marks, Ego.

I spent some time researching battery powered lawnmowers and was led to look into the 56v EGO self propelled mower. Whilst the price is a bit higher than most it both sounded better, plus looked more solid and robust for the application I required. The first EGO mowers I looked at had a plastic body which I questioned regarding hard knocks or bangs that most mowers receive over the years. Then I saw the one I purchased which has the 50cm steel deck.I have now mowed the lawn twice and from what I have experienced I am delighted with the purchase. This mower had a baptism of fire so to speak. Heavy and damp grass to start with due to my location in tropical North Queensland (wet season). I took delivery of the mower on Christmas Eve 2018 but due to prevailing wet weather conditions I wasn't able to use it until a few days later. Due to the failure of my 4 stroke mower, the grass was overgrown and desperately in need of mowing. I did the initial cut at level 2 (second lowest level). The mower handled it easily. It was as much a test to see what the mower could handle as well as how long the battery charge lasted. With two (+) full charges I managed to mow all around the house and the road verge (of which there is quite a bit) fronting the property including using the line trimmer (ST1300E) which came as part ... MoreThis mower had a baptism of fire so to speak. With two (+) full charges I managed to mow all around the house and the road verge (of which there is quite a bit) fronting the property including using the line trimmer (ST1300E) which came as part of the deal with the mower. I have since today done a follow-up mow at Level 1 to take off the regrowth and I am very pleased with the look and finish of the cut. I did considerable research into cordless mowers prior to choosing the Ego brand and deciding it was the best suited to my needs including the warranties offered. The height and ease of adjustability of the handles makes the mower easier and more comfortable to use given I'm 193cm (6'4") tall. The quick recharge time of 58 minutes from full discharge to full charge is great. I have decided to purchase a second battery unit only because I like to start and finish mowing in one process without having to wait for the battery recharge. The self-propulsion system works a treat although I admit it's more a novelty for me to use it as the mower (even with the steel base) is not heavy or cumbersome to push around. All things considered I am very happy with this mower and I look forward to many hours of reliable and quality service from it.

exceeded my expectations, mowing is now a fun job

We bought this mower for our weekender as the old petrol mower was on its last legs. The ground is uneven with a lot of sandstone rocks that occasionally get picked up by mowers so the metal deck on this model made sense. I find this new mower easy to maneuver at the end of each row, much easier than the Masport petrol mower it replaces. It is quiet, throws up less dust and doesn't cover my shoes with wet grass clippings because it has a trailing plastic shield under the catcher chute. We use the side chute rather than deal with bags of clippings, the cuttings just mulch back down into the lawn. Ease of starting compared to petrol mowers, light weight, a good cut and ability to deal with quite long and thick patches of wet grass are a big advantage over our previous ... MoreWe bought this mower for our weekender as the old petrol mower was on its last legs. Virtually no maintenance will be an advantage in the longer term. Wrestling the old petrol mower into the back of the car for its service appointments is no longer an issue. We chose the self-propelled model, this function is handy for the long runs. The mower is very light so pushing it is not a big issue but self-propel is a nice additional feature and we do use it. We own an EGO leaf blower so we had confidence in the brand when it came time to choose a new mower, and we now have two batteries because the same battery applies across the range. Fast charger is a great feature. We have quite a large area to mow but so far haven't been able to run a battery below half on any mowing expedition. Mowing is fun again!
