We have 4 of these and ALWAYS worked flawlessly. People using it should try to undestand what this device is about and how to manage your computer to work wih it. Most people don´t respect the bandwidth of the USB and the bus has a limited one. We managed to wrok with 3 at a time but there is a limit ti what you can do. The camlink is only a conversion device and if it doesn´t work it is likely to be the computer not fast enough or probably needs a restar. We love the quality and what it does for this little money. Thank you for a great product.

Elgato recommends using their Camera Hub software for Mac (free download from their website), and it works fine on my 8-year-old laptop. The Cam Link is pretty wide, so Elgato included an 8-inch USB-A extension (pictured) so users like me can plug it into the the USB port next to the HDMI port. One thing to note is that Elgato states on its website that the Cam Link only works in a root USB port, and my attempt to use it with a USB hub (mine is not powered) did not work. The video image through the Cam Link looks really good, especially when I use a low-aperture lens to blur my background in-camera. I suggest checking your camera settings to make sure that it doesn't shut down during a longer session (this has to do with the camera, not the Cam Link). I ran a four-hour game over Zoom and didn't run into any issues while using the Cam Link.I chose to give the Cam Link five stars because the Cam Link itself is plug-and-play, and Elgato maintains useful information on its website. This dongle exceeds my expectations from both set up and effectiveness, and it even works with my dinosaur of a computer. The included short cable makes it easy to plug into any USB-A port. It may seem pricey, but I find the support and the ease-of-use make it worth the cost.

Does What You Need It To Do
19 September 2022

This is a short review because it functions as expected. It only comes with the unit itself though, more than likely you will still need a mini hdmi to full sized hdmi cord. Kind of a shame they didn't include one in the box. Last but not least this converter is expensive, double or triple check to see if your camera's manufacturer has drivers that can do what this does over usb. Also, if you are using a canon camera, check the canon website to see if your camera can be used with their webcam utility software. If your camera is compatible with it, do not buy this product.

Love these devices. I use them all the time for live streaming. VMix sees it right away, it's a small device with a lot of value, and it's easy to transport with you.I would recommend the use of the USB extender (they seem to come with them, now). The unit will partially cover any ports directly adjacent to the USB the Cam Link is plugged into. The extender will not, so you will still be able to use those ports. Also, it gives the device some strain relief, if the HDMI cord is pulling. I have seen many become bent this way.

This product is a nightmare
6 August 2022

Elgato Cam Link 4KI received this video capture device on the 4th of August 2022 and ever since it was a nightmare. I connected the device to my computer and used it for exactly 67 minutes like this: first YouTube stream test 27 minutes and after the video froze, second 14 minutes stream and the video froze again and the final time I have seen video signal was after 26 minutes of streaming in my third attempt. From that moment I can only see a black video screen so no image. It recognizes the camera in Elgato Camera Hub but no image. I tried everything from reinstalling Windows, testing it on a different PC, on a Macbook on Windows 11, Windows 10, I switched the app to Isochronous USB transfer mode, I've unchecked "Allo the computer to turn off this device to save ... MoreElgato Cam Link 4KI received this video capture device on the 4th of August 2022 and ever since it was a nightmare. Elgato support did not answer, Amazon didn't want to replace the product because they said it's out of stock so I will return it and advise everyone who wants to purchase this product not to do it. Excellent, easy to set up and nothing required to download.I needed to be able to attach two exterior cameras to a laptop for better quality live-streaming.I plugged the Cam Link into the USB on the side of my laptop running Windows 10 Pro.The Sony AX-100, the Sony AX-700, and the Nikon Z7 were each immediately compatible and showed up in my zoom setup as the camera choice for streaming.I could not be happier. I got this "Cam Link 4k" so that I could stream directly from my camera to my computer, and it does that very well.I have a sony a6000 camera, which I connect to the cam link using an HDMI cable; The cam link plugs into one of my computer's USB 3 type A ports.I use the program OBS, and once the camera is turned on OBS detected it immediately as a "Video Capture Device". To set it up in OBS, I selected the 'Plus' sign under "Sources", then chose Video Capture Device. In the "Device" dropdown menu, I selected the Cam Link 4K. This is really useful because if you are moving your camera around, the HDMI cable strain on the Cam Link, but that doesn't matter, because the device is not plugged directly into a USB port.-OBS can detect the camera without needing any other software. I thought I needed to download the Elgato software, but it was unnecessary; And, since I had my camera streaming to the Elgato program, it actually prevented OBS from detecting the camera until I ended to program.-By default, my a6000 camera displays a bunch of information (battery %, exposure, etc), and this gets picked up by OBS. To fix this, you go to MENU, then go to the 'toolbox' tab on the right, and then go to '3'. Select "HDMI Info. Display", and select "OFF". Also, for HDMI Resolution I have 1080p, and "CTRL FOR HDMI" set to 'On'; not sure if those actually affect anything, but it works for me.-I definitely recommend getting a 'Dummy Battery', which basically is an AD to DC power supply that plugs from a wall outlet directly into the camera's battery compartment. Just be sure to get the correct one, that fits your camera. For the sony a6000 its the NP-FW50.

Due to the additional latency added by the processing of the video stream, I had the dreaded lip sync problem. This Cam Link 4K has a nearly imperceptible latency impact to the video stream. If video and audio synchronization matters for your use case and you don't want to spend outrageous $$$s for a more professional system, then the Cam Link should be near the top of your list.

I should probably start with saying that I stream on Twitch, and I wanted to make use of my Nikon D5200 DSLR camera since it’s been sitting sadly in a corner collecting dust. I do not use this for Zoom/Skype meetings, however I have used it for a single Discord video call. I will also list my PC specs at the end of this review for reference. The reason I chose the CamLink is because a couple friends I have who stream also use this device, so I figured this would be the best option since they know way more than I do about what the best hardware is specifically for streaming. It’s genuinely just plug and play. If you’re not comfortable with modding your camera (assuming there’s modded firmware that can bypass your camera’s auto shutoff feature), I would find a different camera that natively has the option to disable auto shutoff if cost isn’t an issue.Integration with SLOBS (StreamLabs OBS) is fantastic. I can use the CamLink 4K alongside my Elgato 4k60 PRO with zero issues. I can also switch between PC and console game scenes and the CamLink is not affected and doesn’t lag.All in all, I have zero complaints about the Elgato CamLink 4k, and I would recommend this product to a friend.PC SPECS:MOBO - Asus ROG Strix Z390-F Gaming LGA 1151 (300 Series)GPU - Asus ROG Strix 1080CPU - Intel Core i9 9900KRAM - Corsair 32GB DDR4
