Having swung hammers in a variety of trades and disciplines for over 50 years, I think I know what makes for a good hammer. Estwing has always led the pack in my opinion. I have the old leather grip hatchets and hammers I used for framing and cabinetry, and they are still lovely tools. But I will put function before tradition now that I am older and hopefully wiser. While the traditional leather grip has the look, the blue synthetic grip has the function I now need. With a little bit of shock absorption and the non-slip reducing the need to grip the tool tightly, both contribute bursa relief. No more golfer/tennis elbow for me. Get the blue grip and you will be glad you did.

I bought his to go hunting for Topaz in the Texas Hill Country, since my wife and I were going to 'share the duties' we were debating the 14 or 22oz...so glad we went for the 22oz. Whilst 22oz seems much heavier, and it is, it was still very easy to wield and gives so much more clout. This pick hammer took all the beating that a couple of novices could throw at it and some more. I can see many happy years ahead with this. BTW, I did also go all out and buy a leather case for the head...well worth the investment as that point can be mean.

I bought this one to use in New Jersey in that old zinc mine that is now frequented by those looking for glow rocks. i had it for a few months ahead of time so only now get to review this since I used it. I wanted to take my kid to this mine and needed an actual mining pick. I had no problem at all busting up rocks with this hammer with no damage to anything but the rocks. This hammer took whatever I threw at it. The grip was perfect for me and I did not use gloves so I do not know how it feels with them on. This is made here in the US of some hard steel for sure and worth every penny.

I'm not a rock hunter. I live in the Sonoran desert in a mountainous area. If you want to plant something here, you need to be able to break the rocks. If you want to remove invasive species, like bufflegrass, you need to be able to break it out of the rocks. I've used it for both purposes. This pick works perfectly. It's not too big but it has the right amount of weight to do what's needed. PSA: Always wear safety glasses when using this pick.
I've taken this rock hammer on several field excursions now, and within 1 year, it's begun to rust all over. I used it on various types of rock--it's not really effective on granite, but it works great with sedimentary and other light rocks. The rust is speckled all over, despite this rock hammer never even getting wet. If it weren't for the rust, I'd give it 4 stars. 5 stars if it didn't blunt up so quickly on granite.

Break through quartz granite, crack open gem bearing rock, and disintegrate hardened patches of soil with ease. It will bring out your inner dwarf and you will be tempted to dig out your own miniature Mines of Moria, but beware digging too deep.
Like all of my other work hammers, I chose an Estwing for the job. First off, it's American made. Very high quality materials make them last a lifetime (my first was bought in 1981). This rock pick balances well. It has the standard Estwing comfort grip that won't slip out of your hand when wet. I use this for cracking stones open in search for fossils. The pointed end is really sharp, so be careful. I use it to scrape and lightly pry loose rocks from the mud or soft rock. Buy a sheath or carry it in a bucket. It will leave a mark if you accidentally hit yourself with it.
This is a great, very sturdy, well built geology hammer. I got it and a set of chisels for my mother in law who enjoys fossil hunting. She sometimes finds fossils stuck in sandstone and this is the perfect tool to help get those out. Bonus points for it being heavy enough to use for self defense if a weirdo approaches her. Really happy with the quality of this purchase. It is holding up really well!
This is a great hammer for rockhounding, don't whack stuff with the tip - use it for prying. Also get a cover for it if you can.Recommend 10/10
Total weight is closer to 32 oz than 22 oz. That being said, it's perfect for prospecting and geology trips. I have an 30+ year old version that I've had forever but thought the 22oz would be lighter and every oz counts when you're packing in all your prospecting equipment down and up hillsides. The new head is 1/2 an inch longer than my old one. A great investment that will last, pretty much a lifetime, so I'm keeping it.
