Atom Eureka Grinder - Even Better Than You Think

The Eureka packaging is absolutely first rate, and the machine arrived in perfect condition. Build quality is excellent, the design is elegant and a little understated, and the machine is scaled for people who need to serve the coffee needs of a real family living in a more-or-less ordinary house - the hopper is sensibly sized, and there is no need to fit a replacement that will actually fit under a standard-height upper kitchen cabinet. Finally, it really is as quiet as the reviews suggest - you need to not hear the machine running in order to believe it. If you want to pretend you are running a busy café, and impress visitors (or annoy your still-sleeping partner) with the sound and fury of your coffee-making routine, you should probably look for a bigger, noisier grinder, with more shiny bits. If you want to make great coffee at home with equipment that doesn’t draw attention to itself look carefully at the Eureka Atom grinder.

Completely unusable as a single dose grinder.

I read several reviews that indicated this grinder could single dose. They are absolutely incorrect. The grinder is designed to have beans pushing down through the grind zone. The more downward force, the more uniform the grind is (to a point where it maxes out). I know this because as the hopper becomes empty I need to adjust my grind setting finer and finer to achieve the same grams in/out/time. In addition, the very last popcorning beans to grind will likely clog the chute, and yet the pull will still run too quickly. The grind is very poorly uniform when the hopper is empty. It is useless for my intended workflow.I will say it is a great grinder otherwise and I hope my review doesn?t scare others away who intend to use it for normal, hoppered grinding. As long as there is roughly 50g of beans in the hopper it?ll work great. 2-4g of retention. Extremely quiet, good ergonomics and UI. A bit annoying to open up, but overall I like the grinder quite a bit in a hoppered work flow.

As this is my first foray into espresso, I wanted equipment that would allow me to experiment and learn, while offering durability and a high quality feel. The Atom delivers on all accounts. It’s sturdy, super quiet, and infinitely adjustable. I also like that when cleaning you don’t lose your settings. I don’t love the shape of the hopper, however, as it does not allow for the best bean flow while using. I often have to open the lid and shuffle the beans toward the intake slot, but this is a sacrifice that I’m willing to make in exchange for the whisper quiet operation. I do sometimes wish that I had gone with the Gray color but the Black is a classic matte and looks great as well.

Excellent espresso grinder

Excellent grinder. Was able to dial in quickly in two morning routines. The grind ajustement is sentive and it’s effects are immediate. Retention appears low and new grind is available after only a few grams of purging. Delivers consistent fluffy clump free grind which results in consistent « timed and weighted » shots. I returned a Titan 64, which DID NOT give me consistent results at all and I am happy I did. The smaller Atom burrs produce 18gms in 11secs as opposed to 5.5 secs for Titan but that is not a problem. The light is very practicle and although the chute is not centered over the portafilter, this is not an issue for me as I prefer to move the portafilter to get more even distribution. Very satisfied with this grinder so far and would recommend it without hesitation.

Good grinder when it works.

I've had this grinder now about two years. At first it was fantastic, but over the last year it developed a problem where it only grinds one time when turned on, after that the timer counts down but it doesn't run. I've seen a number of people post this problem as well. Besides that, the grind seems inconsistent with respect to quantity produced while it's running. I'm not sure whether the gravity feed doesn't deliver beans consistently, or there's some other issue, but I end up with different weights of ground coffee for the same timer setting, and have to then go to manual to make up a few grams of difference. Though I've cleaned the chute, it's also started to deliver clumped grinds, not sure why. I expected more from an $800 grinder.

Great, very quiet grinder

I've had a Bodum burr grinder for several years for my drip coffee maker. It is still going strong. But recently I decided to buy an espresso machine and learned that a good quality grinder able to produce consistently sized fine grinds were essential. From my research I decided to stop by idrinkcoffee and Matt helped me out immensely. He recommended this grinder and I cannot believe how quiet it is! It is step-less and has a bit of heft to it so it doesn't walk on you counter. The unit doesn't really vibrate anyways. The grinder is very easy to use. The chute length is short so you do not waste a lot of grounds and makes cleaning easier. The grounds come out fluffy with no clumping. The only time I saw very little clumping was when the hopper was almost empty and the beans were popcorning in the hopper. No static. I like that you can close the bottom of the hopper so you can lift off the hopper even if there are beans in it. The hopper is definitely large enough for home use and the unit should fit under all upper kitchen cabinets. The only negative I noticed thus far is that the bottom of the hopper has a shallow angle requiring enough beans in the hopper to press them down into the burrs. As another reviewer mentioned, the back right of the hopper tends to empty first requiring you to move the beans to that area should you be trying to use up the beans before filling it with more beans to add downward pressure. The adjustable grind knob is easy to operate but remember if you will be adjusting it to be more fine, only adjust it while the machine is operating to prevent damage to the burrs. Instructions in the booklet specify this as well. I got the chrome version to match my new ECM HX espresso machine.A great grinder. Thanks Matt and idrinkcoffee!

I purchased this grinder after becoming frustrated with the consistency and adjustability of my Baratza Vario. I found that at espresso level fine grinds, I was getting alot of channeling and poor feedback after changes to the grinder. After about a year of this I finally decided to start looking for a more professional grinder solution. The Eureka Atom is among various other ~$1k priced grinders but what ended up drawing me to this model was the quiet operation and ability to pause the grind mid cycle. The grinder really is amazing in how quiet it runs. I no longer have to be concerned about waking others up with a loud machine. Pausing the grind may seem like a simple addition but being able to grind, settle the grinds and then continue the grind reduces waste that can occur as the grinds will want to build up in a giant pile and often topple over if not paused.I do miss the ability to single dose and as others have commented, this is not a machine which will do well with single dosing. Even using the shut off gate to reduce pop corning, it still occurs and this machine does retain a fair amount of grinds. I have gotten in the habit of setting the single cup to 0.5 seconds as a purge before doing my actual grinding.I do wish that the screen would auto-shut off or at least dim when not in use but for now I have just been using the large on/off button on the back corner of the machine during each use.

I have a love-hate relationship

I have a love-hate relationship with this grinder.First the good: the grind is excellent: light and fluffy. And it's very quiet. Have had no noticeable static. This makes it quite easy to live with. The bad? Due to a poorly designed hopper and large grind retention, it's impossible to single dose with this grinder. The timed grinding can produce excellent, consistent results under ideal conditions, but as beans in the hopper age from day to day, the timed setting needs to be adjusted. Also, as you get to the last 25% of beans in the hopper, the reduced weight of beans will reduce the amount of coffee ground for any given timed grind setting. This means that if you only produce a couple doses per day, you'll always be adjusting the timer, which kinda defeats its ... MoreI have a love-hate relationship with this grinder.First the good: the grind is excellent: light and fluffy. Prior to owning my first eureka atom, i thought id never want or need a better grinder. it turned out though that, when i bought one of these for decaf, i preferred it so much more that i felt a desire to use it all of the time. in my home, i liked that it retained far less grounds than the doser hopper on my mazzer mini, and the atom made far less mess, to my surprise. its dosing repeatability and accuracy made my espresso much more consistent and repeatable and it was much easier to dial in changes as the beans dried out over the week or 2 that it took for me to consume a lb. this made the over all experience with the atom so good that i sought to use it for every coffee i produced. it turned out that the low retention of this type of grinder benefited my caf as ... MorePrior to owning my first eureka atom, i thought id never want or need a better grinder. it turned out though that, when i bought one of these for decaf, i preferred it so much more that i felt a desire to use it all of the time. in my home, i liked that it retained far less grounds than the doser hopper on my mazzer mini, and the atom made far less mess, to my surprise. its dosing repeatability and accuracy made my espresso much more consistent and repeatable and it was much easier to dial in changes as the beans dried out over the week or 2 that it took for me to consume a lb. this made the over all experience with the atom so good that i sought to use it for every coffee i produced. it turned out that the low retention of this type of grinder benefited my caf as well as my decaf, as even a days retention of grounds led to changes in espresso extraction rate and flavour. furthermore, the quietness and pleasant sound of the atom made all other grinders seem noisy and clumsy, whereas this one - though lighter weight and containing more plastic in its construction, felt more precise, faster, quieter and higher performance. it turns out the selective use of plastic and other sound isolation techniques is what makes this grinder so quiet. i was concerned that maybe, without a grounds tray, it would be messy, but it is actualy less messy than my mazer mini. few grounds on the counter make a simple wipe-down all that is needed. the basket for coffee drips is nice too - though changing settings means dialing in for espresso again will cause a little wasted coffee. if you needed a one-does-it-all grinder though, this would be it. i simply make americano when i want a standard cup and leave it setup for espresso all the time. the colour and finish is good and the user experience fantastic. options to dim the screen and reset the counter are nice, and the portafilter light is great, even in bright day light. when the grind is pushed too fine a little clumping occurs, and the speed slows down, but this is generally a sign that it is too fine for espresso. i found dialing in the grind for the mazer faster, but the atom easier to make small adjustments to as the shot times start to lengthen or shorten based on your hopper refills. true, the hopper likes to be half full or better, so i suggest a good airtight container for your beans, so you can top it up as the hopper gets low. when the hopper is less than half full it feeds a little less smoothly, but this may be part due to the hopper design and the impeller on the burr. i would leave it though, and just acknowledge it as an attribute of the atoms character. it feeds well, but when full, it feeds best. the hopper seems smaller than the stats may suggest. it seems to just hold 1 lb, from empty - meaning 1lb bags used to refill a half or 1/3 full hopper, will require some airtight bean storage for the last half of your bag. if you use 350g boutique bags you're likely clear to refill with full bags at a time. all things considered, id recommend this grinder, the compak or the ceado based on your budget and feature needs, and just enjoy it . my only concern is whether 60mm replacement burrs will be easy to find 10 years from now, or 20, or 30 - as the mazzer burrs are always easy to acquire. i wish the back of the atom had a nicer Cast eureka emblem/branding badge, as the brand sticker seem cheap compared to mazzers gorgeous emblem. if eureka released a badge, id use it. these badges give the final machine an elegance on the bar. the atom is heavy and has mist of its weight to the rear. it is lighter than the mazzer. the portafilter forks on the atom are easy to remove and replace without tools, but i wish it was made with a finer cast and polished metal, rather than the imprecise and sharp nature of stamped-folded steel. a firmer retention mechanism would keep it from shifting under use. still, the portafilter is held well in place. the atom is nice and narrow, making its placement on the counter easier. i might slightly prefer the ceado, but its size, added cost and overall suitability for the home are edged out by the atom which provides a better overall value with extremely comparable performance. the ceado and mazzer are maybe ever-so slightly more impressive in build but you wont find yourself dissapointed in the weight and quality of build in the atom. if you have a few extra hundred dollars and a keener eye a ceado might be more thrilling, but its a 50-50 which one you might prefer. the Atom is super quiet and performs like s finely tuned sports car. its easy tonmake any kimd of adjustment to, and overall - i doubt i could say it was missing anything. A third grind time setting would be nice, to allow 15, 18 and 21g doses to be programmed. the compak does this, but is not as quiet. tough cal between the three. if your looking for a doserless timed grinder you have a tough call to make. a few little advantages to one over the other means no one is perfect. if only i could design one myself.

Terrible Inconsistent Results - Many flaws

The Eureka Atom has given me nothing but grief and pound after pound of expensive, wasted coffee. I truly don’t even know where to begin with it’s flaws. The shots pulled from this machine have consistent channeling, dead spots, and spurting, despite the incredible amount of care and concern spent on distribution and puck prep.I’ve written in to IDC several times in regards to various issues with this grinder since my purchase of it.After months and months of repeat issues with the grinder, and chasing my tail with extraction problems. I’ve finally verified that there is indeed something inherently wrong with this grinder. I don’t know if it was initially damaged in shipment, if the burrs in mine are abnormally dull or our of character in terms of their shape, or faulted in some way, or what it is. Allow me to explain:No matter what basket I use, be it VST, the stock Breville basket in my 920xl (purchased through IDC at the same time as the Eureka), or a Decent Espresso basket, I almost ALWAYS get severe channeling, dead spots, spurts, and other issues. The espresso from this grinder has always tasted dull, flat, somehow tasteless. I thought perhaps there was just a steep learning curve somehow that I hadn’t experienced before, since it had larger flat burrs. I just could NOT get good espresso and I have been going mad from it.I’ve now put it up against the lowly Breville Smart Grinder Pro for the first time doing head-to-head comparisons, and the extractions were INSTANTLY better in every way. Using my bottomless portafilter and grinding on the Breville, the espresso now flows through all holes simultaneously with no edge channeling, no dead spots, nothing. It looks literally perfect. One sip of the first shot pulled from the Smart Grinder Pro and I was blown away. It destroyed the Eureka in clarity, mouth feel, acidity, strength, everything. Please note my puck prep as I have done for many months:1 - Put Decent Espresso funnel on top of bottomless Breville portafilter.2 - Weight and tare portafilter and funnel.3 - Grind into PF, and weigh my dose to 18g, currently. (Using 18g VST basket mostly).4 - WDT with a homemade version of the Londinium tool.5 - Gentle side to side tapping followed by one or two vertical "collapses".6 - Remove funnel and use Saint Anthony Industries BT Wedge.7 - Use Decent Espresso V2, "self levelling" tamper, to assure a perfectly level tamp every time.8 - Insert and brew immediately. As noted, since now comparing the Eureka Atom to the very inexpensive Breville grinder, I have zero doubt that my Eureka has been flawed all this time. I can’t even begin to explain my frustration with this. I actually wrote as far back as December 2018 when I initially received it… I said the following which was seen and responded to by IDC.“Greetings, I wanted to touch base about the Atom. I haven’t been overly pleased with the results from this grinder, and I’m seeing a lot of clumping. The shots aren’t tasting any better than those from my Breville Smart Grinder Pro, shockingly. Could something be amiss? Is there a way to check my burr alignment? This was essentially dismissed as no major issue, and I was only asked “what kind of coffee” I was using. I think this should have been resolved better at the time. I was never offered to have it replaced or exchanged, examined for faults, nor asked to check the burrs or the alignment or any other source they could have helped me pinpoint. It was immediately just deemed as user error.-The creaking plastic hopper rattles and makes a loud noise while grinding, contrary to the near-silent operation it is claimed to have. I’ve resulted to wrapping a rubber band all along the inside of the hopper where the bottom and top meet.-The portafilter fork is utterly useless, as is well documented online.-The timed dosing is wildly inaccurate.-Popcorning is the worst I've seen on any grinder, and the hopper is very poorly designed. The beans simply do not flow well unless it is 3/4 full or more.-Retention on this machine is massive, requiring a heart purge every morning, wasting another solid 6-7g of expensive coffee.-Eureka customer support has been almost non-existent as well. Broken English and dismissive responses, telling me to again speak to IDC.I’m now stuck with a faulty grinder, left to diagnose the ongoing issue on my own. I have no idea if I need new burrs, a new motor, a professional alignment, or an entirely new grinder. $1200 down the drain. I was offered 50% of it’s value as a trade in, and nothing more.I could go on, and would love to speak to any interested buyers about my experience in greater detail. I can provide photos, videos, anything you request. Find me on Reddit as PaleSproJo and shoot me a message.
