I am absolutely delighted with my set of 120 Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. At 73 I am very much a newbie, having not done any art since I left school, over 50 years ago. I am thrilled to be back in a creative environment, after working all my life and raising a family of 4 children, it's time for me. As a pensioner, this was a huge investment for me. I initially purchased the set of 60, but soon realised that I wanted them ALL! I could not be more excited to be using this amazing palette of colors, and such great quality, to boot. Thank you, Faber-Castell for such great products, all my purchases from you have given me great satisfaction to use, andhave always been an excellent investment. Thank you!!

I also have rarely had a broken lead that needed to keep being sharpened. What i really appreciate about these is how well they take to brushing with water, giving smooth color, just as if you were using watercolors from a pan or tube. Fortunately, they play well with others.Bottom line- the colors, especially when wet brushed out are just clear and beautiful and make me happy.#SweepstakesAlbrect Durer Watercolor Pencils have the Best Pigmentation

For the price, this is a really good pencil set. Wish there were actual purples and pinks tho that came standard. I've only tested them on Canson Mixed media and 140lb watercolor paper. They work well enough. The colors are very nice though blending takes practice (namely how much water and color selection). I HIGHLY recommend having higher quality paper and having a sharp tip if you want to blend wet or have multiple layers prior to being fully dried.Combining them with Tombow Brush Pens , Winsor & Newton or any other good quality water color is pretty good when you want a darker, opaque result w/o the matte/ashey look to it when blending. Their "traditional" water-color hues match very well with Winsor & Newton. I assume it could be the same with other decent ... MoreFor the price, this is a really good pencil set. It's a great option to have if you already moved on to a more expensive brands and want it around for an emergency replacement when you start running short on hues or practice pieces.

Great intro to watercolors
26 November 2020

I am an experienced oil painter, but I've never even tried watercolors. I thought these pencils might offer a decent introduction to the medium, without the expense of a decent watercolor starter set w/ a comparable array of colors. I looked at the different brands of pencils and thought the Abrecht Dürer set of 36 had the most useful color selection.I've used them once and found them easy and intuitive to use. I enjoy their vibrant hues and the flexibility of applying hard and soft edges in any color. I found them somewhat easy to blend, but could see how it would be a bit difficult to cover larger areas with a wash. Not their forte. But a huge advantage of this set is its portability and use of use en plein air. No easel was necessary, and I was happy to do without! Makes getting to a particular spot MUCH easier! Loved that...I have ordered an additional 18 colors (there are gaps in the set of 36, as you'd expect) and look forward to wearing them down to the nub. Great product, great art experience!

HIgh Quality Versatile Watercolor Pencils
14 March 2021

I ordered individual pencils from the website since I was trying to expand my repetoire of more neutral shades and more realistic browns and greens compared to a set that I have from another brand. Initially, I was a little hesitant because of the textured or slightly 'gritty' appearance in the images of the activated and spread colors. However, when using them, I find this can either be used to advantage to provide texture to the painting or it can be eliminated by either a little more water or continued gentle brush stroking. I have started to use gentle, minimal activation where the slightly textured appearance enhances the art, for example when showing tree bark or sand, and it is also very easy to get a completely smooth color application when that is ... MoreI ordered individual pencils from the website since I was trying to expand my repetoire of more neutral shades and more realistic browns and greens compared to a set that I have from another brand. NIce thick diameter to the pigment inside the pencil, takes a nice point, works well either wet or nice detail when left dry.I also found, that unlike a previous brand that I had tried, that the ivory could be used to make small light areas over the top of previously darker colors when the tip is used wet and the mark made using the side of the point. Not like a gel pen, but enough to give texture of white fur overlapping brown fur around the edges of a patch. Assuming the same is likely true with the pure white also.Very excellent quality and highly recommended.

I will buy this again!
10 November 2023

I wish I had bought these in the beginning. These are a game changer! Fabulous pencils. Sturdy, and don't break when sharpening. The color melts immediately when touched with water, and they layer well. A tiny bit goes a long way. The color is beautifully intense and bright. I love the container. The lid is hinged, and they're packaged so you can easily lift out the top layer of pencils. The holders are such that you just press on the tip or end of the pencil to pop it up to grasp it. LOVE THEM! I did a lot of research before I bought these and I see why they are one of the highest recommended. #sweepstakes

I will buy this product again.

Hashtag #sweepstakesThis oil based pencil does not break, unlike a competitor's wax based pencil. The lead is firm, so it does not require constant sharpening. The pencil lays down color in layers so that there is better coverage as opposed to wax based pencils that leave white areas. In other words, the pencil fills in the valleys of the paper. This leaves a more vibrant work of art. My paper is filled with rich colors instead of wax. I now use up my wax based pencils for sketching and practice, and use only Polychromos for art that is important to me. I intend to convert my entire color pencil supply to Polychromos pencils. In fact, I recently purchased the 120 pencil set because I no longer care to use the other brand.

16 January 2024

These watercolored pencils lay down pigment very nicely. Though I seem them as categorized as "soft" pencils they hold their point better/longer than I thought they would. I haven't used them very much yet, so my opinion may change. As the body is hexagonal, they do not fit into standard pencil sharpeners so plan on buying a sharpener that takes larger "diameter" pencils (which Blick does have). I use a small handheld sharpener. The pencil cores have held up nicely while being sharpened - meaning I have not had any breakage of tips with being sharpened. #sweepstakes

Very, very nice set of high quality pencils
8 August 2024

These are excellent watercolor pencils--smooth application, lovely color density, easy blending and very nice selection of colors and hues. I use them for my "garden notebooks" which are mainly smaller scale renderings of botanical subjects and plants. I often transfer/interpret some of these to larger images using traditional water color paints. Would definitely purchase again.

I absolutely love these watercolor pencils. They are rich and vibrant and work really well with traditional watercolor. They are smooth and the colors are absolutely gorgeous with a great selection to choose from. I really like the tin it comes in because you can lay it flat and put half the pencils in the lid so you can see all your color options. The only downside is the tin takes up a lot of space but I've just been getting creative to make more room for them wherever I'm working. Love love love!#sweepstakes#sweepstakes
