Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher – for their world or ours. Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself – and his dad. Then, when Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it. Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world. King’s storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale about another world than ours, in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy – and his dog – must lead the battle.

... A Great Read for Any Audience

Stephen King is a master storyteller, and while many of his offerings lean toward darker content, this is not one of his many horror themed titles. Rather, this is King work his artistry in the manner of an epic tale. The title says it all and the book is filled with King's trademark page-turning appeal. Whether you love King's works and are looking for your next fix, or you are new to his books, this is a great read for any audience.

Fairy Tale is a transport to magical realms with giants, misanthrope creatures, castles and medieval folklore with incredible action extreme danger and an outcome that only the author, Stephen king can devise. There are references to many of the Fairy Tale stories we grew up loving and Stephen king adds his own special twists and turns to them. He also manages to create believable characters who stick with you long after the tale is told. If you love Stephen kings prior novels you will definitely enjoy this one

Another stunning tour de force by the American master of fiction, Stephen King. Reminiscent of Gilead and Mid-World and with some nods to that mighty magnum opus, King gives his dear readers a magical journey into another world. Complete with a heroic but imperfect Prince Charming, monsters, a princess, and pure evil. By far the best King work in some years, long time fans will love this book. Reading takes one to another world as surely as The Well takes Charlie.

A lesson for today
27 September 2022

The world has changed, and Stephen King has written a book with a happy ending! Thoroughly enjoyable, this book is about a 17-yr old kid who has had lots of trouble but manages to turn around his life, as well as the lives around him. Myths are usually based on truth, and Mr. King uses this to explain a lot of crazy situations. A boy and a dog change everything.

A must read book by anyone who loves dogs, and fairy tales

Only one of three novels by King that I enjoyed. No let me be clearer; one of the best novels out of ten that I have ever read. BTW the other two were the one about the Kennedy Assassination and the novel he collaborated on with Peter Straub. I can't wait for the movie; hope they don't spoil it I wouldn't change a thing.

Amazing story for young adults, with a happy ending!
9 May 2023

The use of a teenage boy who was having a tough time following the death of his mother and his father drinking too much is a great draw. That it then involves his creating a bond with a dog, while helping out his elderly neighbor makes it wholesome. What follows, as he enters a magical world below ground is both slightly scary and very entertaining. When he decides to help out these strangers, it gets very strange.

Fairy Tale was amazing
3 November 2022

I have to admit this was my first Stephen King read! I like many have seen and know all of the movie adaptations based on his books. However, I had never read a single King novel until Fairy Tale. I loved this book and would recommend to anyone! I usually prefer quick reads, books that are fast paced, and no more than 300 pages. Like my mom told me “if it’s good you will want to keep reading no matter how many pages.” She was right and that might be why I have never picked up a Stephen King book until now. I am excited to read his other works now. Fairy Tale keeps you engaged and excited to get back to reading. 🙌

Great fairy tale!

I loved this book and could barely put it down. I’ve never read Stephen King before as I’m not into horror but this fairy tale themed tale was right up my alley! I loved the story telling and fell in love with all the characters. Everything seemed so real while reading and I had a hard time detaching back to reality after finishing the story, that’s how you know it’s a good book!

Radar now owns a piece of my heart
9 October 2022

Seventeen year old Charlie Reade didn't set out to be a hero. He was just walking past Psycho House when he heard Radar barking. This leads to Charlie getting to know crotchety Mr Bowditch, a man with unexplained wealth and a shed with a padlock on the door.'I can't talk about it now, Charlie, and you must not talk about it to anybody. Anybody. The consequences... I can't even imagine. Promise me.'After spending about a third of the book building a tenuous relationship with the declining Bowditch, we follow Radar and her new person down a well of the worlds and into the Other. All is not well in this fairytale land: a greying population, giants who "never sing when you want them to" and a Big Bad.I was invested in the first third of the book, when the focus was on the relationship between Charlie and Mr Bowditch. While the world I explored alongside Charlie and Radar intrigued me, especially the haunted city, it didn't captivate me like I'd hoped. I had a soft spot for Dora, although I didn't feel like I really got to know the inhabitants of Empis. Much of the story was predictable but I enjoyed the ride.As far as I'm concerned, the smartest choice Stephen King made when he was writing this book was making Radar a senior dog. I'm all for the cuteness of puppies, with their out of proportion feet and ears they haven't grown into yet, but there's something extra special about geriatric dogs. Their puppy soul doesn't match their body's limitations. Their grey mooshes are adorable. They're quite content lazing on the couch with you for hours on end. They're master manipulators, cajoling you into doing anything their little heart desires just by giving you one of their trademark looks.Needless to say, I fell in love with Radar immediately and I broke my rule of not sneaking a peek at the final pages because I was so concerned for her welfare. I had to know whether I needed to prepare myself for the worst or if I could relax, knowing she would survive her time being written in the King-dom. Radar now owns a piece of my heart."Here is something I learned in Empis: good people shine brighter in dark times."Thank you so much to Hachette Australia for the opportunity to read this book.

This book was fantastic. The story is gentle whimsical and character driven. I loved the story and was moved by the journey of the characters and read the book in three days.Easy to read, enjoyable and moving.Less a traditional horror and more a comment on the strength and love that and people can hold onto throughout even the most difficult of times
