Poor quality build that breaks often, battery barely last a year. alarm sound is so quiet, I think they are afraid to awake anyone. Not at all recommended.

Bought these about 18months ago. They have both just started going off for no reason. Changed the batteries, they still do it.

Bought two from Bunnings in 2016. First one failed at 3am this morning waking up the whole family. Don't trust the "ten year built in lithium battery". Battery cannot be replaced. I now have to purchase an alternative.

Failed after 18 months - so much for a 10 year warranty...
6 January 2023

Bought less than 2 years ago and now one is going off all the time, as soon as the battery is installed it goes off and the only way to shut it off is remove the battery. Tested the battery and its still got heaps of charge. Its rubbish they only suggest certain batteries as any 9v will work but the original and a replacement are doing the same thing. It seems to be a faulty connection. Bought these as a replacement when the last ones (different brand and more expensive) also failed under warranty. Im running out of options and cant afford the hard wired ones just yet.

I would not trust this product to protect my family

Bought a 2 pack of Photoelectric Smoke Alarms, since purchase both have problems where they go off randomly and you have to rush around in the middle of the night trying to find which one it is and get a step ladder to remove the unit. One of them has now failed after 1 year even though the battery claims to last 10 years. Rubbish product and a waste of money.Do yourself a favour and buy something else.

Too expensive in the long run.
11 August 2021

I bought 3 x 2packs of Family First Photoelectric Smoke Alarm Combo Packs. The instructions state that only 3 models of 9V batteries can be used. They named them by name and model number. They were all virtually impossible to find, but I eventually found one of them at $7.68 each plus delivery. If I replace each battery once a year, the cost will be prohibitive, over $510 dollars over 10 years.

Too many false positives

I bought it almost a year ago... one of them every now and then does this beep noise, and the only way to stop that is by pushing the test button. The other one every now and then sounds... either during heat waves or cold nights.

Unsatisfactory product - failed in 8 months and random activation without smoke present
16 December 2021

I bought two packs of the Family First Photoelectric Smoke Alarm, 9V Battery, Test & Hush Button (each pack contains two alarms) on 3 April 2021 from Bunnings. The Product Code is FFPDCHX. Incidentally, they were dated stamped as "Manufactured 2018", so 2-3 years old already before appearing on the shelves. I have used just two of them so far and both have failed by now, December 2021 i.e. within 8 months. The first one just stopped working and maybe the battery was the problem. The second one went off randomly at about 1-2 am the other morning, with no smoke around. Other people have noted that these alarms go off randomly, as well. The alarms come with a "10 year warranty" which excludes the battery. The Product Manual page that comes with the alarm states that "the battery should last for at least 1 year under normal operating conditions". As someone else has pointed out, they take only 3 specific types of 9V DC batteries that are listed on the Product Manual page (Gold Peak GP1604S, Eveready 1222 and Varta 04922) and that these are expensive types of batteries. You can post (at your own cost) the product back for repair or replacement. I really don't think it is worth doing this, as you are locked in to expensive batteries for the rest of the alarm's life, with the added hassles of random early morning alarm activation. The smoke alarms I have had previously have never falsely activated, though they were ionisation type alarms rather than photoelectric (which are supposed to be better for detecting smouldering fires). I suspect that some photoelectric smoke alarms are OK, but the Family First type does not perform satisfactorily. I am surprised that Bunnings is still stocking this product. There are similar poor reviews for the one-alarm pack of this same Family First Photoelectric Smoke Alarm, which are also worth reading. I have bought different smoke alarms now. Incidentally, the batteries in the older ionisation type smoke alarms used to last 2 or more years (write on the date when you replace the battery to keep track) and they used less expensive, fairly standard type batteries.

The all-time low was $20.00 on 31 Dec 2025. That's the lowest price we've ever tracked β€” a great time to buy.
