I had a need for a computer bag that I could use to carry a laptop (obviously) plus other admin items that I need to carry around because I work in a flex-space environment. I read a lot of reviews about people complaining about the lack of space with this bag. Its simply not true.I have a HP Elitebook that fits perfectly inside either of the two internal pockets lining the outer edge of the bag. In addition, I carry two moleskine type notebooks, a wireless mouse, up to three small but thick textbooks, and pens and pencils. There is plenty of room to spare.Additionally, I've read about others complaining about the length of the strap being too long. I dont know where this came from. I'm 6'1 with a long torso but I have plenty of room with the strap to adjust the bag from my lower back to the lower side of my rear.As always, the materials are awesome. The twill is thick and seems extremely resilient. The leather seems really stiff at first which I would be concerned about but I have a Filson belt that was the same way until suddenly one day it was as soft as butter but as sturdy as steel. The leather on my bag is starting to break in already and its only been one month. The hardware is, if anything, overkill. The zippers are robust. I can not see any reason why they would ever fail.My only complaint, and this is a minuscule one, is that the bag has a faint odor of vinegar. I'm pretty sure this is part of the manufacturing process and is not really a problem or something that would prevent me from buying this bag again. This bag is best for: daily commute, business travel, business work in the field, storage of medium-size items for travel.

So, I have dreamed of owning this product for years. Having carried a leather and ballistic briefcase for 12 years thus far in my career, this was a special purpose. I vacillated b/t otter green and cinder as a color that I could wear with my usual business casual attire- but also fit in with a suit. I crossed navy off the list - too boring, no intrigue (plus most of my suits are blue/ navy - it would clash). Then the cinder briefcase arrived - I was aghast... it did not look nearly as the photos had depicted. In true living color, it was considerably more dark in color. The Web pictures all appear to be a lighter, medium gray - let the name "cinder" be your guide. Will probably continue to use it and maybe I’ll get used to it over time. The zipper is really rather sharp on this. I think the quality could have been just as good with a plastic zipper rather than a metal one.

It's a tough timeless briefcase that can be either dressed up or dressed down. Only with a suit and tie, it would seem a little too leftfield. What is more concerning, is the quality of the bridle leather. Or rather the consistency. It appears that the leather supply cannot keep up with the growing demand for Filson products. Hence some parts of the strap, a handle and a tab are thinner than other parts that do possess the thick bridle leather strength that Filson is famed for. This has only been an issue of recent years. My three year old Filson wash bag has better quality leather with an almost uniform thickness throughout.Or perhaps the leather supply can keep up, but this is the new Filson policy? I doubt it, as it would defeat the purpose of backing their products with lifetime warranty. All things considered, this remains the leather-and-canvas bag to beat. But Filson ought to heed attention for the numerous quality bags that come close. Think of Croots, Chapman, Anderson's, Il Bisonte,...
The bags that are now made are still good-looking, good quality bags. But for anyone having known the 'older' briefcases, that were exactly the same design but featured thicker canvas and all-round thick leather, a new original briefcase will feel like a shattered memory. My first original briefcase amazed me for how long it took to break in the canvas (yes, the canvas!). I remember struggling for weeks to open up the zipper rows enough to carefully fit my laptop through, for the canvas sides did not allow much opening... After finally getting it to soften up a bit, I was glad that it had become comfortable to use but still looked very well-shaped! I remember struggling for weeks to open up the zipper rows enough to carefully fit my laptop through, for the canvas sides did not allow much opening... After finally getting it to soften up a bit, I was glad that it had become comfortable to use but still looked very well-shaped! Hardly any sagging, and that on a largely cotton briefcase, seemed to me like a gem out of another earlier era where everything was made quality-first.Alas one of the leather handles had a small weak spot to it, that caused it to become dangerously close to breaking. So I contacted the customer service. Mind you, I live in Europe, and FIlson doesn't do repairs in Europe, but exchanges.Naturally, I indulged and eagerly sent off my old briefcase to receive a new one.Look at it now, standing next to my desk...Wrinkled cotton canvas, gone the well-shaped look of the old bag. Gone also, the breaking-in process; for some this will be a good thing, but not for me.Don't get me wrong; I still like the original briefcase and I still get compliments for it. Yet, whereas previously the prideful thought lingered on my mind wanting to tell these admirers that it not only looks pretty but can handle the rougher times, now it's been replaced with a cautiousness, not wanting to be found out- as vain as that sounds- as someone who carries a briefcase that looks sturdier than it really is.Goodbye old Filson.
The Filson Original Rugged Twill Briefcase in Otter Green is hands down one of the best investments I’ve made! The rugged twill material is extremely durable and built to withstand years of heavy use, yet it still looks refined enough for professional settings. I’ve used it daily for months now, and the wear only adds to its charm. The Otter Green color is stunning—it’s rich and earthy, making it both unique and versatile. The leather accents and brass hardware not only complement the design but are also made with the highest quality craftsmanship. It’s clear that this briefcase was made with attention to every detail. The functionality is impressive too. It's a timeless piece that I know will only get better with age.Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a stylish, durable, and practical briefcase! You won’t be disappointed.
First thing to say is I love Filson products and i thought by buying this bag I had what Brooks Brothers claimed "the best out there", but after using the bag after 9 months, with my normal daily commute items (Apple 13 inch lap top, water bottle, folder with documents and filson wallet), the brass ring for where the shoulder strap attached to, started to wear down so that more than 90% of the original width of the ring band was gone and in danger of snapping in half and dropping the bag with my computer in it. I had it replaced with a new bag and the same thing happened. Be Cautious with this bag as it cannot handle the weight of normal every day items for your commute. I had it replaced with a new bag and the same thing happened. Be Cautious with this bag as it cannot handle the weight of normal every day items for your commute. I was told by the local Filson store in Boston, that I was caring too much weight in the bag and should consider another bag. I love this bag and now have to just carry less of my daily needed items. I was told that the bags produced in 2018/2019 used brass that was less sturdy and has been changed for the later 2019 bags. Take home point is be cautious with overloading this bag as it cannot handle normal every day commute items. Looks great, but can't stand the weight of every day use. That said, the customer service was excellent in dealing with my issue and were very professional.
This is not the Original Briefcase. I had two Original Briefcases for over 10 years, both of which were stolen, and both of which were the same, original, sturdy design. When I bought this as a replacement, I was disappointed to find that Filson does not manufacture quality gear like it once did. Among other things, interior pockets had been removed, the leather is cheaper and thinner, the shoulder strap is cheaper and shorter, and there is no handle clasp to connect the carrying handles. All of these changes were clearly made to save Filson money, but the price has, if anything, only gone up since the first Filson Original Briefcase I bought. Over the years I have bought many Filson products, and over the last few years, every time I get another one the quality is slightly lower. When I contacted Filson, the rep first insisted that this was the original design, and then told me that the changes were made for aesthetics. I would gladly pay more for what Filson is advertising, but not for this. When I mentioned that I also have a medium duffle that has broken and asked for repair instructions, she terminated the connection. Filson and its products have gone downhill. If you are a hipster looking for a man-purse that looks cool, this may be the bag for you. If you want a high-quality, man's briefcase instead of a cheap, knockoff version of what Filson used to make, you will be severely disappointed.
Finally purchased this after mulling it over for a year. I didn't know how many more 5-star reviews I had to read to convince myself this was the right briefcase. Quality is seldom a concern when purchasing any Filson product but price is usually the biggest. Don't let that stop you! Save up, or better yet just buy now. One way or another you'll be more than happy when the time comes and you choose to buy it. If you're considering this as a gift, you can rest easy knowing you won "best gift". There are divided sub-compartments for pens/pencils, and others that will fit a phone, notepad (regular moleskin size) just fine. This is a well designed timeless bag that will work well for anyone.
This is my third item purchased from Filson. I could tell that from the attention to detail and care in which it was packaged for its new owner, that this is a special company indeed. The look, feel, and smell of the bridal leather that adorns the briefcase is top notch quality. It has begun to develop a rich patina, and will only get better with age and exposure to the elements.
