Final Fantasy XVI is simultaneously the 16th (or 19th, if you count 10 and 13's sequels) mainline entry, and the first in a new era. It retains series mainstays like chocobos, crystals, and Cid, but does away with the older turn based and ATB battle systems entirely. The more action focused combat of the FF7 remake has become more fully fleshed out here. While I wish there was a bit more depth to your basic attack and magic combos, mastering what it does give you is a satisfying (and very flashy!) experience. The story, too, is a vast departure from previous entries. I'll avoid spoilers here, but it weaves a much darker tale than series vets have come to expect. Even Lightning Returns, a literal end of the world story, had a fairly cheerful atmosphere. That cheer is rare here, replaced instead with butchery, enslavement, and a healthy dose of men angrily dropping F-bombs. The story has largely taken its queue from the darker Game of Thrones type of storytelling that has been popular lately, but it mostly pays off. It does often reel back with more personal and heartwarming stories though. Even in the gloom there are still good people trying to do right in a world not built to allow it.

If you're not a fan of action based games such as the Devil May Cry series, with a splash of the Souls series mixed in, this game might not be for you. Since the 13th game in the Final Fantasy franchise they've been moving further from traditional turn based gameplay. With the current 16th entry it's now the farthest from the old turn based gameplay the series started with. This is also the first mainline numbered Final Fantasy game to receive a "M" rating, and it's story is very inspired by the "Game of Thrones" TV show. If you're not interested in those extras the standard edition is good enough.

This is a great game. The story is great so far and I'm roughly 50% through the main campaign.Combat is fairly fluid once you start unlocking eikons to expand things. The large battles can be highly cinematic. While you do control Clive for a large portion of the fight, as you get near the end, it goes into a simple QTE style of battle. As someone who intensely dislikes QTEs, these have never felt oppressive as some games in the past have.Rather it's a simple color flash and instructions on screen. While Clive and his loyal dog Torgal make for a compelling duo, the inability to select and command other party members, a staple of previous Final Fantasy titles, is a missed opportunity. This limitation hampers the sense of strategic depth and variety that fans have come to cherish. Moreover, the side quests, while not without their shining moments, often lean towards the mundane and lackluster. They fall into the realm of MMO-style quests, which can feel repetitive and unremarkable. It's unfortunate that these quests don't consistently match the brilliance found in the game's overall design.Despite these flaws, Final Fantasy XVI boldly explores new directions and showcases a refreshing artistic style. It's a testament to the franchise's evolution and willingness to take risks. With some tweaks and improvements, addressing the party system and injecting more life into side quests, this game has the potential to become an undeniable masterpiece. In conclusion, Final Fantasy XVI shines with its exceptional gameplay, stunning visuals, and captivating presentation. However, its success ultimately hinges on your connection with the main character. The game's drawbacks lie in the limited party system and the hit-or-miss nature of side quests. With an 8/10 rating, Final Fantasy XVI's brilliance is undeniable, but there's room for refinement to truly achieve perfection.
First off, I will never purchase another game from Best Buy again, the case arrived broken and pieces were inside. The customer service was of no help but fortunately the game disc works. With that out of the way.I didn't like this game much. Great graphics is not what makes a game good. First off I couldn't stand the combat, the boss's hp pool is ridiculous and if you are not cheesing your way through combat using the accessories given to you by default, you have to learn how to dodge and dodge well and time your melee attacks while the rest of the time just button mashing the ranged attack. My fingers were slipping off the controller buttons, I cannot stand this type of combat. Button mashing combat is not fun. My fingers were slipping off the controller buttons, I cannot stand this type of combat. Button mashing combat is not fun. There was also too much of cinematic combat, I didn't spend 70$ on a game to watch a movie while I pressed one button time to time. Not to mention, the swearing and the nudity is not what makes a game dark and mature, it actually turned me off from the game even more. FF10 got it right with the story and the relationship that bloomed between Tidus and Yuna. FF13 was also very much fun despite what some might say, which I see in this version of the game there were elements of FF13 implemented and brought back nostalgia. FF15's story might be all over the place but I had a lot of fun with combat. On a positive note, I was very glad the developers removed Mog's voicing. It was a welcome change and something I had wanted since Mog was given an actual strong presence in the FF series, the developers should have done this from the beginning with previous titles. As far as characters go, Clive made a good strong protaganist along with good side characters, Cid and Joshua and the npcs. Jill on the other hand I found her character weak and bland, she didn't stand out much only for the fact that she was just there because of the story. The antagonists were strongly played and was fleshed out well. Great graphics and voice acting, story was intriguing and loved the twists with Eidolons and the Crystal. The star rating deductions doesn't have to do with the case but the game.
If Final Fantasy and Game of Thrones had a child, it would be FF16.While past games in the series have mixed genres and periods with success, they still feel like the typical FFJRPG. But Square has really leaned in this time. The weaving of Middle English throughout dialog, and the MA rating, allows the story to touch on grittier adult content like racism and discrimination with more authenticity.Combat is similar to FF15, though more fluid and less overwhelming. At first glance, combat seems basic with only a handful of skills, which can be upgraded quickly. And if you get bored, you can just swap out the active skills for another set.Though, at 30 hours in, FF16 is noticeably more linear than its predecessors. While you can freely explore past areas, you’re restricted from newer ones. This is understandable based on how they’ve progressed the story. Sometimes, it feels more like you’re playing a movie than a game.Overall, it’s a lot of fun, and a refreshing take if you’re familiar with the series.
If you are looking for that old school turn based type RPG that the FF series was so well known for you wont find that here. Though that is not a surpise after the last couple entries in the series have edged closer to the action/adventure genre. This game completly embraces a more Devil May Cry or God of War fighting system. Even adding quick time events into the mix. Another big change is the gear. Something that was huge in min/maxing your character before has become just finding materials from quests and killing monsters to craft or upgrade your existing gear. Also gone is the huge open world to explore. You have a world map you click on destinations to move from one to the next. Also gone is the huge open world to explore. You have a world map you click on destinations to move from one to the next. Also there been a whole lot of reason to go off the very linear path searching for treasure as if you do find any it is usually just crafting items that the monsters drop. There is a skill tree that you can unlock to suit your own playstyle and items that can make the combat much easier for you if you just want to see the story play out. So all that said, you may wonder why I still scored it 4 stars. First off, it is a truely gorgeous game. Both the cutscenes and the actual gameplay. Square made the right call making this a next gen exclusive. Second, the story. It is dark high fantasy that is up there with Game of Thrones. So if you enjoyed that you will probably love it. And the voice acting is top notch, Also there is a lot of nostalgia going on here. Seeing Chocobos and Moogles and lots of returning monsters reimagined in such detail is awesome. As is tradition in FF games the music is a masterpiece. And the biggest reason is the combat just feels good. Fighting as Summons (Eikons in the game) is unique as well as each one controls differently and almost feels like its own game. I definitly recommend this game to anyone who likes story, graphics, FF lore, action adventure and are even old school RPG fans that are open minded to a new type of Final Fantasy playstyle.
A superb character story, very solid action RPG gameplay, though a bit lacking in certain features, it does a great job with everything present. My progress so far, from what I understand from those who've beaten the game? 40% main game, 25% if I include the sidequests as they're apparently more later on.Music is excellent. Not memorable like Uematsu's tracks, but more like a very solid movie soundtrack that just melds into the background, ambience, and tone of what's happening on screen (or portends to what is about to happen when you get to the story triggers on a map). It's a VERY solid soundtrack. Spending time sitting and just listening? I'm impressed with Soken's work.Graphics are amazing. It's a VERY solid soundtrack. Spending time sitting and just listening? I'm impressed with Soken's work.Graphics are amazing. Ok, so the character models look a little odd, as they went for realism in the textures for clothing, the world, the enemies, buildings, etc., but for the face they wanted it distinguished from the hyper-realism of FFXV. Going instead for a realistic design with an anime brush stroke. Though the shadows, creases, movements/animations are well done. It's a strange aesthetic unlike say Dragon Quest XI which went for a mixture of realism and semi-realism for world and clothing textures, and anime-esque clothing designs, along with more realistic skin, but the body shapes, hand designs, and face are clearly anime in style. Distinctly Toriyama, which works a bit better, but I am growing used to what FFXVI did, and I do like it overall. It is quite pleasant walking up to textures to find they're high definition, not a mixture of high and low definition that look great from afar, but the mid and low def are pixelated up close.I know some people have experienced blur on Quality mode (which is how I'm playing), and a bit in battle in Performance mode. Some of that was patched, but some still experience it. I can say using an older 1080p TV, I'm not experiencing any of that, so it's really how the TV is processing everything with certain special features turned on triggering a delay in writing to the screen likely causing the blur. So I'm not experiencing that.A few maps when NOT in battle, do have some clipping, but it's rare. I thought it was size, but it's really density. Towns with a lot of people in a very small space, if those people are moving around, if I make hard turns, there's some frame drops, but that's about it.The demo caused some systems to overheat. I never had that experience, and I've not had anything like that running this game over 4 hours straight on a few days. It might get a little hot at the rear, but there are a lot of factors involved there (fan maintenance/dirt build up, clearance and openings for natural air flow, general dust in your play room, how hot your room is, direct/indirect sunlight hitting the console, etc.).Some complaints say it's a hallway simulator. No, it's not. A few maps here are, but most of the game maps are not. There are certain core story maps that are designed this way to move you through at a faster clique, while offering ever increasingly difficult battles, and a slight lull in between sub-bosses. However the game world is a series of several larger areas that all intersect, and open up as the story progresses.Another common complaint are the QTE's. At the start of the game, the QTE's are heavy mid-battle for several major battles, but around 15% into the game, the final series of mass QTE's ends. After that they appear at the butt end of a battle, or if the game detects the player is close to losing the game, and you're in a certain range of the health bar of the boss. Then it will trigger the same QTE's that are there to make the ending of the fight more cinematic. So if you triggered it at the 15% health bar of an enemy it's because you have 0 potions and high potions, and your health is in range of a single strike for death, and you managed to get the boss down to that threshold to trigger it allowing for a "win". However if you reset the save, and get the health bar down to 5~0%, depending on what the normal trigger point is, then the battle finalizes in the same series of QTE's. These get shorter as well over time. However it's always present, just no longer mid-battle after the first major Eikon battle. So it's like a fun way to end it.Another common complaint is the battle system is just mashing buttons. Sure if you use the Ring of Timely Strikes, which cycles through your available/unlocked attacks and automatically triggers them. Then you don't need to swap between anything really, maybe Eikons for Eikon strikes at the end of a combo. It even takes advantage of your position and the way certain skills function, like parry's + attacks (like the specific side/back slash if you parry or dodge at the right moment). However this makes the game entirely boring. There's a lot of variations in gameplay between the jump + attacks, jump + attacks + magic, attacking + magic, charged magic and charged normal attacks, the thrust attack, variations of this that are unlocked around the 20% marker when in Limit Break, which works as a power up state but also offers upgraded versions to certain normal attacks that can be further powered up. Then there are the Eikon abilities. Of which you have a special infinite use ability that gives a battle function, and Eikon attacks. One complaint is Eikon abilities are too similar, or are somehow ALL damage oriented and have no unique functions. This is profoundly untrue. I'm not even sure what game they're playing, or their distaste means they're not paying attention to the mechanics and functionality. Each Eikon special ability has infinite usage, and they all work differently. Just to compare Phoenix and Garuda. Phoenix's Shift is a charge that at something like 20 paces/steps will close in on your target similarly to FFXV's warp. If you don't lock onto a target you can also swap targets on the fly, keeping your enemies in a constant confused state as you change enemies, do one or two strikes, then change to another. If you lock on, you just charge that one enemy. Do be wary as while it's a great way to close the distance, if the enemy is using an attack, it won't negate that attack, so be prepared to time your attack properly for a parry, or dodge immediately and try to trigger a precision dodge in close proximity for a counter (and if parried properly, a counter and a slow-down window to just unleash attacks). Garuda's special function Deadly Embrace grabs things with a claw at the same distance as Shift does, about 20 paces. If it's your size or smaller, it draws it to you with a fraction of damage, and a slight stun. If it's larger, Clive is lifted into the air, and this is great to use your arial downthrust attacks. As per the actual Eikon skills? Well there are so far 4 per Eikon, and you can have 2 accessible in battle for 2 slots you have to hold a button to use that replace the attack and magic slots. These range in functionality, but Phoenix is pure damage, one is long range, one is short, one is group (and actually pulls in nearby enemies), one is just mass AoE and high damage. Garuda's deal far less damage, but are tied to the attack button and reducing your enemy stagger bar very quickly. One is a series of attacks that if you keep pumping the attack button can be from like 10 to 30 attacks in a time limit, and each attack does substantially more to the stagger bar than to damage. If staggered, every 5 attacks will increase the output per attack by 5%. Another is designed as an arial assault attack that is best used if Clive or Torgal launches an enemy in to the air...or it can do so itself, and allows for certain other special arial triggers after it's done (it also eats through the stagger bar fast, helping to trigger it quickly)...like the magic charged arial attack or the sword charged ground strike from the air. That arial attack also hits groups, but it only pulls in one, just hitting nearby. Another is a counter that if done properly is quite punishing, but again, it's secondary mode is to whittle away that stagger bar so you can really wail on enemies. The list goes on in functionality and secondary functionality, which sadly the game doesn't mention, but it's not hard to see. Temporary stuns for Lightning, added charges from the Lightning that its special function slows the game down and lets you add charges that last for like 10s, but add extra damage when said enemy is hit (and really pack on damage if hit with any lightning skill attack).Combining every aspect and element inherent to this game, most of the gameplay structure built around the Eikons, really opens up a range of combat options.Enemies telegraph their attacks is another complaint. Yes and no. There is and isn't. Some attacks are blatantly obvious, while as battles progress with sub-mini-bosses and bosses, they're not as obvious, and sometimes they seem like they're down for a bit of a beating, but are far away, or only give you a half second in the 2nd or 4th end of the fight instead of that sweet 2~3s to wail on them. So it's a very mixed bag. The only way to make this very easy is to use the Ring of Timely Focus which gives you a QTE button for dodging, which I don't like to use, or the auto-evade Ring of Timely Evasion, which I haven't tried, and I'm wondering how many players making this complaint aren't using either of those two, as I'm finding it's not that easy to predict the long stream of attacks for a fair number of bosses as battle progresses and they change their patterns up a little (mostly it's just adding attacks, and having infrequent downtimes). For those like me NOT using those rings, the trick is to master parry timing, and knowing when it's better to dodge. Also certain Eikon functions like Garuda do help, like two uses, then the down thrust, then dodge in the right direction to avoid a blast.Darn, hit the limit...it's a solid 9 for me.
I really don’t understand all the hate for this game. As a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, this is now one of my favorites in the series! Turn based FF has been long gone, there should be no surprise there about the combat system, which I personally am enjoying a lot. You can get really creative with abilities/combos that makes for a very satisfying experience. The characters are relatable and lovable, the story is written extremely well, with deep knowledge into the world and lore of FF16. The Eikon battles and soundtrack are epic! Visually gorgeous and stunning. I have not come to a part where it feels dull or boring. This game just keeps reeling me in wanting more. Complaints about the side quests are a bit silly in my opinion too. They are of course optional but ... MoreI really don’t understand all the hate for this game. This is an overall very enjoyable game to me, and I encourage others to try it out for themselves!
Whether or not you've ever played a Final Fantasy title, this game is unrelated to others in the series as far as its narrative. The voice acting is superb, every character is voice acted and many will make references to your actions. The setting and scope of the world are massive, built around lore that is slowly given as you learn about it through playing as Clive the protagonist. As protagonists are concerned, Clive isn't the atypical fantasy hero out to save the world. (No spoilers) He's out to make up for a wrongdoing, but the world is filled with strife just like our protagonist.Side characters are equally fleshed out, each one having their own purpose. There are optional side quests, some of which are humorous (mostly are rather dark). The combat is more ... MoreWhether or not you've ever played a Final Fantasy title, this game is unrelated to others in the series as far as its narrative. You don't control any party members aside from Clive, but they each pull their own weight.Boss battles are massive and steal the show. Every boss encounter is packed to the brim with nail biting sequences.Though the change in an action based combat system and a darker storyline have generated more negative reviews, this is a game that shouldn't be missed. If you're looking for a more mature, subdued Final Fantasy, look no further. The series has finally pushed aside the glamor of light fantasy and embraced a story that is packed with emotion.
