I thought I had small scales but apparently they need to be even smaller to be compatible. My lovely wife gifted me this Flair Classic for Christmas and it does everything you want a quality manual espresso machine to do: make real espresso with a real portafilter, high quality components, easy to clean, option for a pressure gauge. The workflow is very manageable, I only wish the tamper was a perfect fit but the versatility of the one that’s included (doubles as dosing cup), makes up for the minor size difference. The brew chamber is a bit smaller than the pro 2 but for me, I prefer the smaller dosages. I’ve been doing singles w/ 7.5g and doubles w/ 15g. Will experiment with 17g doses soon.Cheers Flair. Thank you for putting together such a lovely product and A BIG THANKS TO MY WIFE for such a well-researched and bonafide espresso find.

I am a novice home barista having bought a Gaggia Classic a year ago and just recent obtaining an espresso grade grinder. There is a learning curve to using this ā€œmachineā€ but it is easier, and more forgiving, to pull a great shot from this device. And because of the basket shape, you actually don’t have to grind quite as fine as the Gaggia. With the Classic, I do use smaller dosing: 12 or 13 gram as compared to 16 or 18 gram with the Gaggia. This is due to the smaller water capacity and if I did this over, I might have purchased the Pro. Either way, device quality is Great and the ability to pack it up and carry quite easily is Amazing. It does make me want the 58 however and that may be in my future.

Cool device for a beginner espresso maker. Definitely consider time/labor of pulling shots, washing all components, etc

I like this tool. It's the first espresso maker I've ever owned, and while I did watch a lot of videos before getting in, once it was in my hands there were a lot of things I realized I didn't understand about it because I don't have many tools like this. I added the pressure gauge and tamper, but realized I didn't know how hard to tamp in general. There are a LOT of components I have to wash after. I maybe am also a little weak or I'm not dialing correctly, it's often very hard to pull the shot. So it takes me almost 10 min to make a shot that is usually less than a single, disconnect everything, wash it all, etc. The components now also don't exactly align straight so I'm having some struggles there.I still like it, clean up doesn't involve scaling a machine or ...Ā MoreI like this tool. Exactly What I Wanted

I've been wanting an espresso maker for a long time but have hesitated because the machines are expensive and they don't let you control the variables that let you make the perfect cup. The Flair Classic solves both problems - it's very affordable and it lets me tinker with everything from grind size to water temperature. The only problem so far is that my current electric grinder doesn't make a fine enough grind for espresso, and I couldn't create the puck properly to get enough pressure to make true espresso. We've found a workaround until I can get a proper grinder. The one thing that could be improved is a more prominent list of things to consider before purchasing an espresso maker, with one of those being an appropriate grinder.Overall, I'm very happy. I feel like its a really good value for what I got. It makes good espresso. The lever isnt too hard to pull and offers a lot of pressure control. I live in a small apartment and the compatability is really nice. The build is good. It doesn't feel cheap, but it also doesn't feel like a CadillacHowever everything is very irregularly sized so it makes customization difficult. There really aren't any different baskets and few tampers to try. It's also hard to get much higher than 15g in or 30g out, which is slightly limiting your options too.Overall, if you're "working class" and want espresso in your life, this is a really good opition.

Great travel machine
22 January 2024

The machine works as it should and makes great espresso if you’ve got a pressure gauge (I could not make comparable espresso to what I get with my La Pavoni without one), but it is still a travel machine first. Luckily that’s the main reason I bought it.My only gripe is that it’s a bit flimsy feeling if it’s not bolted together and the handle is a bit loose feeling. I’m not sure if the handle is something that all lever machines suffer from, as my La Pavoni is the same.As a predominately milk drink consumer, I can say that I definitely prefer the workflow of having a steam wand on my machine, but I was surprised by how easily I could live with the fully manual experience even pouring some okay latte art. Another thing is that it seems that the flair has a much smaller grind range for acceptable espresso than my Pavoni or Gaggia, not really a con but something I found interesting. All in all, I’m happy with the machine and glad that I chose it for travel over the picopresso. Quality of life seems a bit better, but I am still curious to try a picoresso eventually. The classic also seems like machine that flair never changes much, so I figured it would be best for longevity. Not that I’m too worried about such a simple machine. Maintenance is one thing that this thing makes me very happy for. No descaling, no complicated gasket replacements, just wash and go.I still don’t know that I’d ever recommend a machine like this as an only machine, but as a travel machine or just to play with levers it’s fantastic. I can also see why they’d recommend having two group heads if you’re making back to back shots as the pucks rarely come out cleanly.

I bought the Flair Classic
27 January 2024

I bought the Flair Classic to hold me over until my "big" machine's date for servicing, and I am totally pleased. It took a few days for me to get the process down, but now things are going smoothly. I'm getting 24-25 g of brewed espresso from 16g of ground coffee with about a 30 sec. extraction time, in line with Clive's recommendations. I use the same cup for both the preheating of the main body (cylinder) and to collect the final purge after completing the shot. At first I didn't pay attention to the all-important fact that the tamper doubles as the piston extractor! Also, it's easier to remove the portafilter from the cylinder if you give it a little time to cool off. Not a problem for me since I'm not trying to make one shot right after the other. I wish it weren't so much work at the knock box getting the puck to come out, but I guess that's because it's deeper than a "regular" portafilter. I'm now making excellent espresso with this thing. Dialing in is critical: I got some dark-roast Yirgacheffe from my brother-in-law and I needed to go much coarser or the handle wouldn't move at all. And they really don't want you to use excessive force. Sometimes I wish I had the model with the pressure gauge (or the auxiliary gauge) but on the other hand, I love the elegant simplicity of the classic as-is.

I have pulled some very tasty shots with this. I find myself wanting to pull more shots than I can drink. I find myself going through a lot of coffee. It is very satisfying to pull a tasty shot with it! I sometimes wish there was some sort of mug handle on the brew head. It gets hot. I sometimes wish the brew head could hold a little bit more water in the chamber when brewing with light roasts, but adjusting pre-infusion time and adjusting dose can help to compensate. Overall, it is hard to complain about this product. There is a workaround for any issue I can think of. Nice, affordable option for at-home espresso
2 January 2023

Really pleased with the espresso shots the Flair Classic pulls. It required some trial and error and a different grinder. I had an decent burr grinder (Bravatza Encore) but it wasn’t quite getting the grounds fine enough to establish enough pressure even on the lowest setting. I picked up a Timemore Chestnut C2 manual burr grinder and that has made a world of difference. Splurged a little for the tiny tamper and I don’t regret it. Using this with a frothing kettle makes for nice at-home cappuccinos. Materials of the Classic seem well-made. Metal parts like the brew chamber and the tamper are nicely machined. Can’t speak to longevity of the parts or seals yet as I’ve only had it a month but so far, so good.
