Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 Firewire Audio Interface
Liquid Saffire 56 is Focusrite’s new flagship 2U multi-channel FireWire/Thunderbolt audio interface. Liquid technology combines with Saffire PRO Firewire interfacing to deliver a host of authentic preamp flavours, seamless software integration, excellent routing flexibility and future-proof, rock-solid driver stability. In addition to six of Focusrite’s legendary mic pre’s, two of Liquid Saffire 56’s preamps uses the third generation Focusrite’s Liquid Pre amp, providing the choice of ten different preamp emulations. These include emulations based on the Neve 1073, the Pultec MB-1, Telefunken V72 and seven more. A harmonics dial on each Liquid preamp lets you account for variance in vintage originals of the same model, or use levels of 2nd, 3rd and 5th Harmonic distortion creatively to shape your sound. Liquid Saffire 56 doesn’t just offer preamp variety; sonic integrity is also guaranteed throughout. Both the Liquid and Saffire preamps ensure low noise and distortion, whilst quality digital conversion and JetPLL jitter elimination technology ensure pristine audio quality as your audio flows between the analogue and digital domains.

The Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 is a 28 in, 28 out audio interface with the flexibility necessary for ease of use and the sound quality to compete with units costing much more! Great preamps, ADAT expansion ports, SPDIF, MIDI I/O and loop back. No other unit in this price range comes close....I own 4 of these units.

From the hours of research and numerous debates with friends and colleagues I decided to give the LS56 a try. I cannot give much of a review as the LS56 unit was down and out from the get go,. No communication with my iMac or a laptop running Win 7. The 2.2 Mix Control could not detect the hardware nor did OS X or Win 7. Both Focusrite and Musicians Friend agreed that I send it back. Does it have something to do with living in Canada? As several of the bad reviews were from here. Focusrite, can you pleased build a product that works in our part of the hemisphere? Also, what is with the VTS/AU plugins? Nice addition but they are useless for us PT9 users unless a VST wrapper is in place, not a great solution. Once bitten twice shy is ringing out loud and clear!

This is for live recordings - the pres are very good and the inputs/outputs are all that one could possibly use. The fact that you can have mics and lines connected at the same time and select them digitally is a time saver and makes for a clean setup. In addition, the 16ch of ADAT, SPDIF and Word Clock IN/OUT give this unit all the digital connection and sync options necessary for most situations. THe pres sound very pristine and clear, not edgy. With a full, warm result with a variety of mics. The MIX software is easy to use and allows to different CUE mixes.

For the price, it will be hard to beat.Plenty of features, more than enough in/outs for any project studio, very flexible unit.No complains about the quality, great looks, seems durable. It sits there on my rack, to do a job, and so far so good. It took me longer to find a space on my rack, and bolt it down, than to figure out how to use it. Most people that complain probably didn't do their research before buying, and didn't read the manuals. I did, long before I bought it, like I always do, read, read, learn before I buy. I run Pro Tools 9, with a Mac Mini, and never had a single glitch. Of course, I made sure that Avid had their software up to date, and ready to interact with the LS56 before I jumped into buying, in fact, I didn't upgrade to Pro Tools 9 until I ... I don't know about the results on other platforms, since I exclusively use Pro Tools, but I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. Can't say much about the Liquid Saffire Channels, because from day one, I started using the "Dunk" which is based on the Manley Slam, and I loved the results, and I haven't had time to start comparing the other models.I don't think you can find any other with so many features, and quality preamps near that price range.
This is a recording or live preamp/mixer. CH 1 and 2 have multiple preamp emulation choices (nice). It has optical in and out, TRS outs, word clock, SPDIF. I am learning to use it with acid pro. For me, a little hard at first to understand, but got it almost going in a day and a half. Great specs and if you shop you get a lot of bang for the buck. Two hi end mic pre's, ch 3 and 4 have added direct instrument TR inputs, all channels 1 thru 8 have XLR and TRS in puts and source assignable TRS outputs. You can save the setting to CMOS and use the unit standalone on live gigs. It is taking me a while to get running as I want to have the Mics, drums, guitars go from it to the DAW clean with no processing, yet use the outputs to connect to the analog outboard gear to get ... Recording to the DAW clean allows me to change my mind on how much and what kind of processing/effects to settle on in the final mix. Very versatile unit, high end (sampling up to 192), and very cost effective. I think I got mine as a refurb for 7 or 8 hundred. Go to Focusrite.com for details and manuals.
Really a nice unit across the board. Analog I/O is amazing. You get 8 analog line pres, 8 mic pres, and 2 instrument pres (ch. 3 and 4), which even though they share the same channels are seperate inputs that are selectable in the mixer. Plus you also get 10 analog outputs plus headphone outs, all of which are able to be routed from the mixer. The pres/converters sound great to me. Even though I haven't used any other preamps and only one other audio interface, it gave a really clean, transparent and crisp sound to my recordings. Digital I/O is there for expantion. You have 2 adat inputs/outputs, which will work great if you ever want to buy any external adat pres, like the Focusrite Octopre/Dynamic for exapmle. The liquid channels are great too. Only avalable on the first 2 mic pres (not on line inputs or any other pres), but it still sounds great and is a great added feature. Don't know how close the emulations are, but it sounds good enough to keep me from spending the money and time trying to get the vintage preamps they are trying to copy. There is a lot more good things you can say about it, but I'll cut short and just say, overall, you really can go wrong and won't reget buying this unit.
I run a post production business and do a lot of field recording as well as some in my studio. What matters most to me is flexibility and channel count. Some companies brag about how many channels they can record simultaneously but most require extra digital pres to raise up the channel count. This unit gives you 8 better than average pres that work better than any live mixer console. They are not as good as my expensive standalone pres but you will never get that in an audio interface. The real plus of this unit is the strong a to d conversion. When you listen back to your recordings you will instantly notice a strong warm sound. (which includes mackie presonus and Allen & Heath Zed) It also has a very nice front panel that gives you lots of great functions like monitor mute. My only complaint so far is the need to run at high buffer sizes when using the liquid pres. (side note: I have not used these liquid pres much but it seems like a nice additive to the signal chain. It is like a high quality plugin for your daw.). I also wish I could adjust the gain with the software control. That would make the unit much faster in the studio.
This product is very good for the money and shines well in the interface market...The two liquid pres alone are worth the cost of the unit, not to mention the fact that the stock pres also sound clean and of good quality. The difference is subtle, but it is there. You're obviously not going to get a four times the price neve preamp... but at least you get some different color choices. The one downside of this is that you have to use the software to run all your routing... and it can kind of be confusing/awkward. It is fine once you have it setup like you need it though.Overall, I am very happy with this product and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an interface in this price range.Liquid pres are a bonus and also independent headphone ... It is built solidly and the knobs and buttons do not feel cheap.
Cannot be used as a slave, will not pick up audio via ADAT like any other unit would. You cannot switch between line/pre without entering the software, which will not load if used as a slave. Used as a master, even worse. Makes simple tasks like routing a fold back mix through 3-4 a juggle between the software routing, pro tools routing and mixer levels. Getting nothing from the monitors but a mix out of 3-4 takes a lot of brain power every time! Then you have to switch back to check the mix... On other units, you press a button. with one finger. Focusrite you have created a monster. I will be selling mine asap, and using something that DOES work as a slave, to the 002 or 003. Do not buy the focusrite saffire 56, it will annoy you.
I really wanted an Apogee or Universal Audio Apollo, but couldn't justify the $2000.00 or so that they would've cost. I did some research and, for the price (under $1000.00) the Focusrite Liquid 56 seemed to be the best option. I, at this point have used it enough to say it works great. I have a lot of old pro tools sessions that i want to edit, convert and remix for Reason and Live and have enough channels to play with. I don't think I've really run it through it paces yet, and haven't had a chance to put the liquid channels through their paces, but if something comes up, i will edit this review. Also part of my decision, the Liquid 56 is among some products that can be modified by Black Lion Audio, making it better in terms of "high end" audio quality.
