FOX 38 Float Factory 170 29 GRIP2 Tapered Fork Built for big hits and chunky terrain, the FOX 38 Float Factory 170 29 GRIP2 Tapered Fork delivers the composure riders need to push themselves on the world’s wildest trails. The latest chassis edition to the FOX family, it receives its name from the oversized, 38mm stanchions that highlight its rowdy intentions. The revised arch shape boosts stiffness, which is further enhanced by the use of an elliptical internal steerer shape, boosting forward and aft rigidity. Worth the hyperbole, the GRIP2 damper is a true game-changer. Offering riders never before seen levels of adjustment, it includes FOX’s Variable Valve Control technology for simple, external tunability of what would usually require a full strip-down to achieve. The EVOL air spring increases the negative air spring volume for ultimate small bump sensitivity, which in turn amplifies traction, increasing the amount of time the tyres contact the dirt.

I've never felt such an improvement with a single piece of equipment before. I went from a Lyric to this and I felt like I had purchased an entirely new bike. The controllability at speed and in the Jank is noticed on the first ride. Between the travel and the 38mm stanchions, The bike just feels so solid underneath. I've been blowing away my PR's since adding this fork.

This fork is exactly what you expect from Fox for a premium highly adjustable fork. It has the new crown design so, while it has threads for a mudguard, there isn't one available that will work on it (yet - syncros has one on their site but it's not available for purchase yet). I really appreciated that they give you everything you need including the star nut and maximum volume spacers so that you can just install amd go about your tuning process. Of course, don't get it if you aren't into tuning your suspension. You essentially have 6 things to play with, 2 on the left (pressure and volume spacers, amd 4 on the right high and low speed compression amd dampening). There are recommended starting points which help. Ride is what you expect from a premium trail fork, ... MoreThis fork is exactly what you expect from Fox for a premium highly adjustable fork. A surprisingly noticeable upgrade from the 2020 Fox 36. I put this Fox 38 Factory on my Firebird 29, and immediately noticed two differences from the older 36. First, it's definitely more plush off the top, and second, the steering is noticeably more precise. I'm 165 lb. medium aggressive rider, and at my weight I wouldn't have thought the 38mm stancions would make a difference to the steering feeling, but they absolutely do. In fact, on the first ride it felt a bit like the head tube angle was a steeper because the steering was more responsive, so much so that I thought maybe the offset was wrong. The offset turned out to be correct, so the steering responsiveness defintely is a function of the bigger stanchions/newer design brace. Oh yeah, I can also verify that orange is 20% faster. ;-)

Fox Racing Shox 38 Float Factory Grip 2 is awesome!
13 June 2022

I recently purchased this fork to replace the one that came on the Trek Rail 9.7 EMTB. This fork gives me a much better feel with respect to firm stability in rough dinosaur backbone type terrain and much smoother and more consistent compression and control in the bigger drops, than the almost new fork I removed that the new bike came with. I also really like the look of the Kashima coating and it seems to be a good hard and smooth surface that held up well for many years on the Fox Float fork I had on my previous MTB bike.

Handles light XC duty with ease. However, it's incredibly noodly and can't hold a line on step/technical trails. Can't say enough how bad this fork is. For what it's worth, I've been trying to ride a 2022 Giant Trance Advanced Pro 29 as a custom 125/140 setup. However, the bike is an absolute beast of a climber/descender with a 150mm Lyrik. I can't wait to sell the 34 and get a 140mm Pike Ultimate.

Great Upgrade From SID Select+
4 March 2022

Overforked from a SID Select+ 120mm to this Float Factory Grip 2 130mm. I took a small weight penalty and thinner stanchions but this fork feels stiffer and more compliant than the SID. Suspension stroke is buttery smooth (no stiction) and floats over the small bumps, feeling planted the whole time, in a way I couldn't dial the SID into doing. And this is all with the factory recommended settings for my weight other than adding extra PSI. Big hits feel the same as SID, never feeling like bottoming out. Very happy with the purchase!

Great fork 10/10
29 June 2022

The fox 38 factory proves to be an incredibly versatile fork. It’s manufactured for enduro racing but can also used for downhill and also even trail riding (thanks to the dampening adjustments) you can customise the travel from 160 to 180 mills of travel. The Kashima coat is also 10/10. For those who don’t know what a Kashima coat is, a Kashima coat is used for anti rust, anti scratch and fatigue. That is the gold coating on the stems.Lastly, I think that the fox 38 is a great fork and people that seek a lot of gravity and intense enduro riding should definitely utilise this fork.

I want to run over all the roots now
1 August 2022

My bike originally came with a 100mm Fox 32, which finally wore out after 8+ years of rocks and roots. My frame can take either a 100 or 120mm fork, so I splurged and got this shiny new Step Cast. I wasn't sure how much of a difference 20mm or travel and 2mm of stanchion would make, but wow... just wow. Cornering is noticeably more precise, and I'm picking the lines with the big roots just to enjoy letting the fork eat them up. There is a bit of "hiss" when the fork compresses which my old Fox didn't have, but it just reminds me that it's down there doing its thing. The fork wasn't cheap, but it breathed new life in my old bike at a time when a new bike wasn't in the budget.

Should include the socket
18 August 2021

I'm very happy with this fork. I'd give it five stars for it's performance once I got it dialed in but to do that for me I had to remove the factory installed token. The fork felt kind of stiff and harsh with the token in. I don't do big drops and rarely bottom out 160 mm of travel and prefer more linear travel. It's cool that they include extra tokens but I have to deduct a point for having to buy a special socket to swap out tokens, seems like they should include the socket if it's part of tuning the fork. I also had to buy decals to match my bike cause I guess I'm some kinda fashionista but $35 really? That aside the fork is awesome and easy to tune with the FIT4 . I had it dialed in after about two rides.

Won't get Forked hard with this guy
23 March 2023

My review might come off as something shocking. It's been bouncing around in my head since I put this beast on my Orbea Wild. It's charged into my life and I feel like I can't keep my love for this fork compressed. I don't want to keep you in suspension over my thoughts, I'm really quite pumped up, I just need to get dialed in...Its a badass fork that makes riding E-enduro a true joy. Once everything is set, this guy rips technical, and landing a beast of an ebike, incredible.
