I've been using the X-T line for over 8 years, first X-T1, then X-T2 and after that I just didn't see too much drive to upgrade except the lack of IBIS. Now, after a 10-day foreign land trip my love for Fuji X-T cameras is again in full blossom. The sensor and processor are wonderful that permeate the images with brilliant colors and tones. Saturation is otherwordly. Autofocus, one of the weaknesses of my X-T2, but not terrible at all as some tended to suggest, tremendously improved. I preordered the X-T5 from B&H the moment it became available, and I received it within a week of its release. It replaced my X-T30, a good camera. But the X-T5 is the next level, or two, or three above.... It's exactly what I want in a (primarily) stills camera. I have tested the camera with my 35 f1.4, 16 f2.8, and Viltrox 56 1.4. There's a definite increase in sharpness and resolution with the new 40mp sensor over the X-T30. Also, so many jpegs are excellent right out of the camera, a surprise over the X-T30. The AF-S autofocus is fast and spot on. I haven't tested it in every AF-C scenario (testing is ongoing), but so far it performs fine. Overall, the X-T5 is a definite upgrade. I'm not much into video, so I'll leave that to others, but from what I have seen on ... I am a Sony A7V/RIV shooter and I had added Fuji X-T4 to my kit about a year ago as a walkaround/fun camera for lower pace, artsy photo outings and street photography. Its design provided a more tactile, slower, old-school shooting experience; the 'recipes' less need for post processing, all of which I love. But the focus system left me unimpressed and wanting more. When X-T5 was announced, I preordered it with excitement and with some trepidation due to the new higher density sensor potentially diminishing the superb performance of the sensors in the older bodies. I upgraded from an X-T30 body to the X-T5. I was already a Fuji devotee, based in large part on the film simulations and capacity for amazing SOOC shots. It's obviously never really about the megapixel rating, but I can say that I am getting cleaner, crisper shots out of this than my last Fuji (which was itself quite impressive!)I shoot nature, landscape, and fine art/abstract in the studio (my basement, TBH). The IBIS is great for getting longer exposures out in the woods where carrying around a tripod isn't great.Autofocus isn't the fastest thing in the world, and if I were shooting a lot of sports or birds, that could be a drawback.I've played briefly with the Pixel Shift Multi Shot, which isn't exactly as easy and seamless as it might seem. The XT5 is not as robust as the XT4 it just does not feel like the XT4 in your hands. Feels more "plasticky" and definitely smaller. That Fuji is selling an additional addon grip pretty much tells you that they knew that the grip was too small. If you have large hands you will be disappointed or buy the grip at the same time. In operation, it is very much like the XT4 except that the shutter shows a slight delay and that the buffer for CH high speed mode is extremely poor. Camera slows down tremendously and cannot keep up. Use of Sony Tough 64gb 300 read and 299 write helps but comes at high expense of additional $200. Also could not understand why Fuji would package this camera with the 18-55 kit lens if this lens is not on the list of the lenses which perform ... I rented a Fujifilm X-T4 body to test it before buying to replace my old X-T20 (ofc it broke just a few days before I had the oppurtinity to visit Rocky Mountains National Park). The customer service was alway very friendly and quick. They also helped me with shipping decisions to make sure my camera would arrive in time. Within just a few days I had my camera and I still made it on the hike with the rented camera.The camera showed an error to turn the camera off and on again (I think 5 times during my 7 day rental). I didn`t miss any important shots because of this error and it was always fixed within 2 seconds when I followed the instructions of the error message.Because of this minor inconvinience they even extended the rental for another couple of days on the ... I have been using an XT-2 for landscape and nature photography since fall of 2019. While the upgrades in the XT-3 and XT-4 were numerous, the focus on hybrid shooting and video meant I had no real reason to upgrade.The XT-5 is the upgrade I've been waiting for, with its return to a photography-first focus. The 3 way articulating screen returning is a huge selling point, along with the beautiful 40 MP sensor and the addition of IBIS (since the XT-2). After a few weeks of shooting with it, I can already notice a huge difference in image quality, especially when shooting handheld in low-light scenarios. While the upgrades in the XT-3 and XT-4 were numerous, the focus on hybrid shooting and video meant I had no real reason to upgrade.The XT-5 is the upgrade I've been waiting for, with its return to a photography-first focus. The 3 way articulating screen returning is a huge selling point, along with the beautiful 40 MP sensor and the addition of IBIS (since the XT-2). After a few weeks of shooting with it, I can already notice a huge difference in image quality, especially when shooting handheld in low-light scenarios. The auto-focus features are also much improved since the XT-2.Using the camera is very intuitive if you are coming from a previous XT camera. I was able to pick it up and immediately start using it as my daily driver. It feels good and sturdy to hold, and I was able to use my older X-series lenses that are not in the "recommended" lenses category with no problem.All in all, it was exactly what I was expecting and wanting. If you're a first time XT user, or upgrading, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
This is the camera (and the system) to buy if you love a traditional, intuitive, simple interface. It provides direct access to the essentials via mechanical dials and switches. Yes, endless menu options are there if you want them. But the basics are right in front of you all the time. Shutter feel and handling are excellent. It's compact and solid. The sliver finish is lovely, especially when paired with the little 'Fujicron' silver prime lenses.Image quality is excellent, printable up to ~20 x 30 easily. To get anything better you'll have to spend twice as much for a full frame camera, and you'll lose the lovely ergonomics and simplicity. Image stabilization is very good, as is autofocus.
I have been using the x-t2 and then the x-t3. I purchased the x-t5 mostly for three improvements.First and most important was the improved autofocus with the face/eye and subject detect autofocus.Second was the IBIS.Third and least important was the increase in resolution.I mostly shoot still using single point and either manual or single autofocus.Shooting in this manner I would rate the x-t5 a clear 5.However, I spent some time shooting video of a hunter jumper rider and experimented with the different autofocus modes. In all cases I used continuous autofocus.I tried face/eye detecting, animal detecting, and none of those. There was really no difference in the quality of the results. This doesn't surprise me as while filming with either face/eye detect or animal detect I could see the camera losing lock on the subject as the box would latch on to a jump standard in the foreground, or a distant tree in the background. I could see this in the results by looking closely. In the end I decided I preferred the experience not using any of the fancy subject detection autofocus, but just the unspecialized autofocus. I found this experience preferable mostly because it doesn't have the focus boxes jumping around the screen distracting me from the subject I was following. For me, the autofocus improvements were of no use. That and the reviews of the Sony cameras have convinced me that if I were really going to be shooting much video I would switch to Sony. However, with the smaller size, great lens lineup, and lower weight and prices, I will be sticking with Fuji and hoping they catch up on autofocus technology.
