Nintendo's all-star cast of combatants is back in Super Smash Bros. Melee, along with a new batch of brawlers ready to tear it up. The sequel to Super Smash Bros. keeps the same basic premise: Characters duke it out in interactive environments, using special attacks and various items to knock each other into the abyss. Some new defensive techniques add an even deeper level of complexity to the combat. In addition to traditional battle royale matches, players can select all-new ways to play like Coin mode and Tournament mode.

Ah... I remember spending hours playing this game with my friends growing up, it's one of the reasons I liked going over to their houses so much. Hours and Hours spent destroying Mario... lol.Gameplay: Highly Interactive, fast pace combat. Requires fair timing and gobs of time to master any given character. Event modes are a lot of fun, such as the normal campaign and the Adventure mode. Adventure mode was a new take on the basic campaign mode, giving you access to running through a land accumalting damage before taking on bosses. Other training modes help, and the home run contest is new. 4/5Multiplayer: this game shines when you have multiple players involved. Well, this and the other Smash Bros game for Nintendo 64. Then there's that NES emulation ROM game floating around on the internet...This has to be one of the best fighting games on this system, if the announcer doesn't bother you. At least they're not essential to winning the game. You can play as Mario of course, along with Link, Luigi*, Samus, Princess "Peach Toadstool, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon, Fox McCloud, Ness, the Ice Climbers, Kirby, Pikachu, and Zelda. Yes, Zelda is finally playable on a U.S. Nintendo system, and she can turn into Shiek when you pull down on the control stick and press the B button simultaniously. If you intend to buy this game and want to find out for yourself who else is unlockable, don't read the very last paragraph in this review.Except for in one of the special matches that don't earn you anything, defeating your opponents is not about draining their ener.
I have played thousands of hours and watch tournaments of the highest caliber of play and there is no better fighting game. I will attempt to change that subjectivity into something a bit more objective. The game is pixel perfect. That is the attacks completely line up with the animation and graphic of the sprites, there isn't just a bulky 'area' of affect like you'd see in street fighter or even a high/mid/low range you'd seen in other traditional fighters. Every pixel can be hit by any other pixel. The controls are incredibly solid and to a point fluid and intuitive. They allow for an incredible range of precision and timing that opens up unbelievable combos and techniques. (The most well known being wave-dashing). In expert play, it isn't uncommon to see a player entering four commands a second, each command within that second having to hit a certain precision. That is to say you cannot simply spam attacks for the same effect. The game is good, but honestly probably subpar for the fun multiplier free-for-all type battles. If it is just you and some friends wanting to bulls*** for a while, brawl is probably the objectively better game. But if you're interested in tournament style competition and seeing how far you can manipulate and master a game, I'd argue no other game goes nearly as far. There is a reason this game is being played ten years later. The best and most defining statement about this game can be summed up with this observation: The better player will always win. N.
I absolutely adore this game. In my opinion, it is way better than the original. There are so many more new things to unlock, like characters and stages. Trying to unlock some of the characters drove me a little crazy because I would get very frustrated. It's a great game to play with company, or by yourself. There is a new Adventure mode that takes you through some cool levels, although after playing it ten or more times to try to unlock Young Link, it gets very old. Like, if you beat the Adventure mode, you'd get a trophy of the character you used. It's definitely very different, but I don't really think it affects the game play too much. It's more of an add-on than anything. I'm pretty sure the goal is to collect all of the trophies in the game, but there are a lot!So, if you're a huge fan of Super Smash Brothers I highly recommend you buy this game. I'm working on saving up to buy Super Smash Brothers Brawl, but that's another review.
The first Super Smash Bros. was definitely my favorite game for the Nintendo 64, and continues to be. The fighting style, tactics, and just general theme were captivating and surprisingly difficult to master. I still have trouble defeating a team of 3 level 9s! Fast forward just 2 years, and out comes Super Smash Bros. Melee. The graphics and movesets have been revamped by a surprising amount. Things like air-dodging, chargeable smash attacks, side-B moves, pummeling (punching the enemy once you have them in a grab [with the z-button]), and more elemental attacks have all been added to create a fighting game with combos and mindtricks that rivals those of the most advanced 2D fighters. Just a note: the "combos" are a series of single attacks that allow you to quickly pulverize an enemy, instead of a series of button presses that create a combo. This makes SSBM a variable fighter, and allows for people to create their own combos (with varying success of course). There has also been a large upscale in the number of the characters. SSB has 8 initially, and 4 unlockables; SSBM has 15 initially (Zelda and Sheik!), and 11 unlockables! The single player modes have also been transformed into a behemoth of challenging and enjoyable events. Many characters are unlocked in the single-player modes, although it is also possible to unlock all the characters by playing a ton of versus matches (up to 1000 matches in total I think?). SSBM was probably one of the best sequels an already great.
I was prepared to give this game 1 star because I played it for the first time today and I thought "this game is stupidly easy!" Then I realized the game was preset on "very easy." So that explained things. My first impressions of the game is that it has the most beautiful graphics I have ever seen. There's not a single flaw I could find. The colors are bright and vibrant and the characters are very well detailed. However, the pitfall to this game is the loose controls. They're too simple to be a good fighting game and too loose to be a good platformer. In this fighting game you're asked to sometimes perform some difficult jumping and, while that's not the toughest thing in the world to do, it should be a lot easier. Street Fighter it's not.
