I paid many hundreds of dollars for this sounder which is completely useless to me as the depth display reading is only about 5mm high which is unreadable to me whist using in the boat. I had an older Garmin (300c) (a similar size overall unit) which had a much larger and readable font size of about 20mm or so. I have Contacted Garmin regarding this and they have provided no help. A photo of the new EchoMap and my older sounder included below:

Sensitive, yet discriminating resolution. Nice nav system. No-brainer operating system. I live in an area that is quite remote with thousands of lakes that do not have any map dara yet. This machine makes it really easy for me to create my own maps and share them, which is pretty handy appea this machine makes it really easy for me to create my own maps and share them, which is pretty handy up here on the North Shore of the St-Laurence. I know that when I can go down south, I can simply upload highly detailed map data. In the meantime, I'm all set up to build my own maps of the undiscovered country that surrounds me .

I’ve used this unit about 10-12 times on my yak in the brissy river and the bay. It was pretty easy to install and my 12v 9ah battery keeps it powered for as long as i need. In the river i use split screen sonar and downscan, and have found it works quite well, images are generally agreeable with what i know to be there. In the bay i split the screen between maps and sonar. I use nearmap to find bits of reef and the coordinates, and plug these into the sounder to create and save boundaries which show up on the map. So far it has improved my catch rate. All in all a pretty good value unit.

Easy to install / set-up unit and would do what i require. However first trip out screen froze 3 times and had to remove power and restart also shutdown once. Contacted Garmin and advised to do forced update of software to see if that fixes problem. Haven't been out since to test - hoping problem is resolved
I bought this unit to fit to my jetski. It comes with a chirp sounder transducer which would be easy enough to install if you wanted that feature. The unit itself is a good size for use on a small boat or in my case a jet ski.I do not need the sounder function so didnt install the transducer which made it super easy to fit. Simply connect the black and red cables to their respective power terminals on the battery and its done.I mounted the unit to the jetski using universal Ram mounts which are readily available online and if you get the appropriate ball mount it screws straight into the 2020 + models of yamaha waverunner FX.The screen is sunlight viewable and as it has charts built in is a very useful tool for reef trips. It is not touch screen and this is ... I love this little device on my Kayak. It's small enough to be out of the way, but big enough to read clearly. Updating the device isn't overly fun, with the SDCard, but I can save my own points in here apparently. Not that I'm brave enough to take my 'yak out far enough for decent marks. NQ kayak travels makes you feel like an bit of salami sitting on a jatz cracker floating around for the nearest croc. :) It's simple to use, lightweight and consumes very little power. Approved!
Fitted this unit in the glovebox compartment of our Yamaha ski mainly for navigation. The transducer was fitted inside the hull and worked better than expected, still reading at 70 kph, weather conditions did not allow testing above this speed. Navigation is fantastic, we mainly used the full screen, unit has a suggested small craft route which is great in unfamilar waters. Great product for the ski and definately recommend.
Went to the new Stafford store today looking at depth sounders . Been keen to buy one for some time for my kayak .I wanted to get a look and feel for the Garmin EchoMap Plus 45CV Combo. The salesperson Craig helped immensely with some excellent advice on a few different brands . After thoughtfully illustrating the workings of both lowrance and Garmin I had a better idea of what I actually needed for my sort of fishing and budget.though I did not purchase the sounder today I will go back soon to get one from Stafford. Craig was also helpful in selecting some Braid and lures, thanks Craig and BCF your new store is great .. for both service and gear ..
The power cord that goes into the unit became corroded and unreliable causing the unit to either freeze or reset eventually corroding bad enough to stop working all together. Sent to Garmin for warranty claim and was told this was due to lack of maintenance and no warranty offered. BCF said it's not their call and washed their hands of it. I have a 5CV bought almost at the same time and have no such problem using it in identical circumstances nor have I had this problem with any Lowrance I've ever owned. Would not recommend this unit it is now a paperweight don't make the same mistake as I did!
Use this on my Hobie PA12 kayak. It is a nice compact size, but with the down scan and chirp, still has enough features to make for a productive day on the water.
