Daylight Readable With Long Battery Life

While I have an Apple Watch, its battery life is at best two days. The Fenix 5X's battery life is at least a week and even if the GPS is used I get at least two days of on/off usage of the GPS.Apple uses an emissive display which sucks a lot of power. The Garmin is a passive display with backlight, which means it is very readable in daylight, though requires either automatic or manual activation of the backlight. I don't live in the dark, thus this has not been a problem especially given the fact the display is VERY readable in bright sunlight. The weight of the 5X is very minimal given the composite case, offsetting the size of the watch.Comfort wearing the watch is very good in part due to the soft stock band.

Excellent big watch, tons of options and features, almost too many. A little wonky to learn to use, but once figured out, very nice. I use it for bicycle riding workouts, and marine navigation. ....specifically returning to fishing spots on the ocean. I like the many face options. No regrets buying this watch, none at all. Some nice accessories available, like a silicon skin to keep from scuffing it up.

Great idea, poor implementation.

This Garmin watch constantly shows 6~8% less than the medical device, mostly <80%. It's also very annoying to measure the Oxygen level since you have to keep your whole body still for at least 2 min (not in the car nor train either) or it simply wouldn't be able to measure. The last thing is, towards the end of the trip, the bluetooth keeps dropping the connection with my iPhone even if I keep the phone and watch in the same room. This became SO annoying that I had to turn on "DO NOT DISTURB" at night or it'll simply reconnect every ~30 seconds. Finally I reset everything back to factory setting and returned the watch back to REI, and I don't think I'll ever touch any Garmin watches since I've tried 3 different models w/ mostly unpleasant experiences.

Great sport watch but it can be improved
2 July 2019

Really great sport watch with smart settings. It has so many things and applications that I was not able to check everything yet and maybe I won`t be able to check everything that this watch is capable. Really good sport stats, even the strength app recognizes some of the exercise in the gym automatically. It has everything that I personal need even more - thousands of different applications and watch faces. Really happy with the watch but for me the battery last only 6-7 days not even close to the 20 says stated from Garmin. Maybe is cause I have the heart rate on, the Oxi sensor on and I work out like 5-6 times per week for about a hour and for sure the gps is on for that time and the music also but still 6-7 days... I would be happier if it was at least 10 days. ... MoreReally great sport watch with smart settings. The other thing that I am not so happy about are the colors and the performance of the display and also that there is option to accept the incoming call but there is no possibility to speak directly through the watch. I think for the price of 600$ the display can be much better. And finally the design - All in All it looks great but I think it will be much better if there is better protection for the bezel and the glass. I use the watch for about 15 days and I don`t have single scratch on it but I am pretty sure that if I bump it accidentally on something it will get scratch or dent.

I use this watch for Mountain Biking. I have yet to learn all of the features for using the maps and connection to Strava, but so far it gives me data I want to see. VO2 is one thing I am interested in, but I do not have a power meter for my bike yet, so I may have to do some running activities to see what my VO2 is.I am having fun with all the information and tracking my progress. For me it is motivating because I want to improve my fitness level and the watch lets me see when I should be resting and when I should be going harder. It's a fun toy and for a data geek like me, it perfect. It does not make me workout, but knowing its on my wrist while I'm riding or whatever makes me want to push harder to increase those numbers. It is a motivator for me.I really wanted the 5x Plus for the PulseOx. After using it, I am a little underwhelmed, but I was hoping for too much. Really it works fine, I understand its purpose. I read many things an people are less than impressed with the accuracy. I know my O2 levels are usually 99% or 100% as checked with a high quality PulseOx meter and the watch reports low. The watch generally reads a little low but most times shows a number I would agree with. Running the PulseOx all the time I have to assume the dips are due to loose fit and location of the test being done. Now, its supposed to be for sleep tracking and acclimation of elevation. The acclimation I think it would be sufficient because you can see variation from normal reading (even if low) to you current reading. I do breath holds for freediving, I understand that a PulseOx meter of any kind will not give you real-time O2 levels as oxygen in the blood and in the tissue do not function like a gas tank...

I've had this watch a couple weeks now (replaced a Suunto Ambit2), and I have to say it offers just about everything i could ask for.I was a bit skeptical about the maps at first (small screen/failing eyesight!) but they really do work to keep you on a route, and the turn directions at waypoints are nice. The pulse ox reading takes 20-30 seconds, and I gave up after 3 unsuccessful attempts on top of a CO 14er. (Which is the kind of place where you're curious about your oxygen saturation.) But mostly that feature has worked fine. I LOVE having a wrist-based heart rate sensor, and not having to wear a chest strap....that difference from my old Suunto is huge.My only word of caution....the newest Fenix watches do NOT allow you to use Garmin Basecamp on a Mac...at ... MoreI've had this watch a couple weeks now (replaced a Suunto Ambit2), and I have to say it offers just about everything i could ask for.I was a bit skeptical about the maps at first (small screen/failing eyesight!) but they really do work to keep you on a route, and the turn directions at waypoints are nice. Basecamp requires the watch to be connected to display anything except the basic map (which seems silly to me), and a Mac won't recognize the new Fenix as a mass storage device, because it's using a newer file transfer protocol. (Naturally, Garmin blames this on Apple.) There is a work around... Android File Transfer, a 3rd party app that does the trick. I've decided to blow off Garmin Basecamp and use Gaia GPS, and then export the GPX files to the watch using the 3rd party app.Other than that, no complaints. A fantastic watch that tells you more than you ever wanted to know about your adventures.

Not loving it so far

I purchased the watch specifically to help navigate on hiking and backpacking trips and so I knew before hand I would have to purchase the detail topographic map. Unfortunately the topographic map is not the same as a hiking trail map; almost no hiking trails are actually displayed on the topographic map. For that reason I can’t actually plot a route in the Basecamp application and then save it to my watch; the purpose for purchasing the watch is almost completely negated. In addition, Garmin introduced with this watch a new data transfer protocol which is only minimally supported by the Mac operating system. For that reason the Basecamp mapping application for Mac barely works at all with the fenix 5x watch. It’s agonizingly slow when it works at all. For that reason the Basecamp mapping application for Mac barely works at all with the fenix 5x watch. It’s agonizingly slow when it works at all. On one of my backpacking trips, I set the watch elevation to match a United States geological survey elevation marker on one of the mountains. Despite that, the watch was unable to accurately display elevation as we moved along the trail. Apparently the method people are using to achieve this functionality is to create their own routes using an open source mapping application and then loading that onto the watch. However that requires technical skills and experience and there are conflicting instructions on how to accomplish this. I’ve found the Garmin help pages online very unhelpful; their exclamations are so brief,: written in such short sentences without any elaboration I don’t find them useful at all. The telephone technical support people are very knowledgeable, for the most part, and recognize and apologize for the limitations of the watch and are otherwise helpful in figuring out how to use the watch and software. I was pleased to be able to set a waypoint when we finally got to camp and then navigate my way back to camp after roaming through the woods looking for firewood. That was very helpful. I believe ultimately it was my responsibility for failing to research the capabilities of this watch before making my purchase. I ended up purchasing an eTrex 30x instead. I may or may not return this watch. It is definitely designed to be used for tracking running and other cardio activities.

Let me start by saying I absolutely love this watch.I had sat on the fence buying one for a few months. Having worn a fairly run of the mill fitness tracker for several years, I first noticed the Garmin Fenix range on the wrist of a fellow swimmer at the great north swim a couple of years ago and I was taken with the style.A work colleague bought one about year ago and still raves about how good it is on a weekly basis and so I decided to take the plunge and I found Firstclass Watches to have the best price online. My order shipped really promptly with no hassle and having placed the order on a Friday I had it on my wrist the next morning.Despite a huge array of features the Fenix 5x plus was really easy to set up. This was made even easier by linking it to my smartphone. If you are reading this then you are probably aware of the features of this watch - suffice to say it is the current king of fitness and sport trackers. More likely you are interested in the service from FCW - I hadn’t heard of them before googling to find the best price but I would by from them again in a heartbeat (a heartbeat which I can now accurately measure) and simply cannot recommend them highly enough.Perhaps, like me, your concern is the high price of this watch and you are struggling to justify it? That’s basically what kept me on the fence for several months but having made my choice, I couldn’t be more pleased. The Fenix 5x has completely surpassed my expectations in every way.I use it to track my steps, exercise (swimming lengths, and weight reps at the gym). I’ve used it’s navigation when lost (both driving and walking). It’s alerted me of a sudden incoming storm when out hiking and also let’s me know when high and low tide are.I find tracking this sort of data very motivational and I’ve lost an extra 3kg of weight since strapping this in my wrist - seriously.Yes your smartphone can do some of what the Fenix can but not all and not so neatly - certainly not without the risk of running out of battery in the middle of your hike.In summary... I’m well pleased... if you like the style & function of this watch then buy it and buy it from Firstclass watches - you’ll have it next day and you’ll save a packet.

Love it or hate it? I held off writing a review on my new Garmin Fenix 5x Plus until I had used the watch in ‘anger’. Having read LOTS of reviews on various sports activity watches, I decided that I would part with a substantial sum of money and buy the Fenix 5x Plus. I have a number of watches, but wanted to upgrade my GPS unit on my bike so was looking to incorporate the GPS ability of a bike computer with the functionality of an activity tracker. I looked at the 5x and the 5x+ ...... the 5x+ is bigger and can seem quite ‘in your face’ due to the sheer physical size, but I have a Breitling Navitimer World..... so is on a par with that.I opted for the plus variant as I wanted a longer battery life and the bigger face for ease of use with the maps ..... I am so glad I did. The battery life is brilliant, and the Garmin claims are more or less spot on, if not a little better. I have worn the watch, every day since purchasing it for a variety of activities..... including just being able to tell the time ????.Indoor activities, such as Spin classes, rowing and CV /strength work in the gym are easily tracked and aid HR zone training....the activity tracking start / stop is simplicity in the extreme. Outdoor use is equally as easy. I cycle (road and MTB) and the map function is useful for ‘wild’ rides in giving an additional sense of direction whilst in forests, the GPS function worked well in this environment and I didn’t seem to have too much of an issue with GPS capture/dropout. Equally, whilst walking/trekking in the hills the map/compass function was very useful, however I would always use my map and compass reading skills, rather than relying solely on the Garmin Fenix..... but it’s nice to know the two ‘tally-up’!The Fenix 5x + has the useful addition of storage of music, which as a user of Spotify is useful in the gym, as you can stream your playlists or download music to the watch...... they claim 500 songs, but I’ve not tried that many...... useful for the gym but I don’t use it whilst riding. The Fenix 5x+ will connect to Bluetooth headphones and to ANT+ compatible devices.... useful for my bikes with cadence and power sensors and although I’ve not tried it yet, with DI2 shiftersThe Fenix5x + is eminently flexible with the range of additional ‘widgets’ available to download. To get the full functionality of the watch, you will have to either download the Garmin app to your Phone (I have an iPhone) which gives a massive array of data which is streamed /synced to the watch or/and a PC . I have done both, mainly because to charge the phone, I use the PC. Unlike IOS /android phones where you get a 3 pin plug and charging lead, with the Garmin, you only get the usb lead and no plug...... so charging through a PC is the only ‘safe’ way to go. I wouldn’t like to risk using the iPhone plug and charging the watch from that as charging rates/capacities potentially vary hugely!!!One thing I would suggest, is downloading the Garmin user guid for the watch and printing it out..... the info in the box is minimal to the extreme and the downloadable pdf document is way more detailed...... just saying ????So..... love it or hate it.......? I LOVE it. Superb functionality, battery life and style a GREAT watch/activity tracker..... albeit on the pricey side...... but as with everything in life ...... you get what you pay for.

well made but needs tweaking It’s “aiight”

It’s has its pros, which if you’re looking at a fénix 5s+, you should already know about so I won’t go into that. Let’s talk about the cons.First and definitely foremost is the sleep tracker function. Not as accurate as I had hoped. Also, you need to set the time you “normally” go to sleep for it to work. So if you’re watching tv during that time, for some reason it cannot tell that you’re still awake or not (although Fitbit can). Like resting heart rate and movement can’t tell your sleeping.... oh and it has a gyroscope/barometer or something that tells when your wrist is rotating. That should help Garmin deduce sleep mode. There is no way you’re gonna tell me that I’m sleeping at 80bpm when I normally sleep is approx 50-55bpm.This is not a help for us busy ... MoreIt’s has its pros, which if you’re looking at a fénix 5s+, you should already know about so I won’t go into that. There is no way you’re gonna tell me that I’m sleeping at 80bpm when I normally sleep is approx 50-55bpm.This is not a help for us busy dads who don’t have a set bedtime and can go to sleep from early as 11p or as late as 2am on any given night. For some reason, the time is off also and it’s saying I woke up at 11:52am when I’m in the car and it’s 7:52am, but my watch display says correct EDT time. Synch with the iPhone in my pocket guys! The user interface on Connect is feature packed but is not very intuitive (again, see Fitbit). The sapphire crystal is pretty dark so widget and app displays are nowhere near as light and bright as they look on the website.Overall, it’s a good watch and made very well, but where it is weak, it’s VERY weak and gets spanked by Fitbit.Perhaps a software update will overhaul sleep tracking and user-friendly intuitive design.Very good company and durable, but these tweaks will go very far.Just good things to know before you make an $800-$1,100 investment.
