Beautiful expensive watch; not so good in water

I want to love this watch. It is a beautiful watch with useful features, but two months into purchase the back button stopped working. I didn't get to record my 2nd triathlon race because of the back button malfunctioning. It's rated 100ATM and so I thought it would be great for open water and pool swims. I don't even deep dive or anything but apparently, it's a common problem for this model. It's recommended to wash the watch for every swim which I did but still encountered this problem. I've owned a couple of cheaper Garmin Forerunner watches and never had problems in open water and pool swims. The most important to me is the ability to listen to podcasts without brining my phone on the trails. So far, after hours watching YouTube videos and spending more hours on the phone with customer service, this feature still does not work. I am disappointed. Apple Music is my go to for music and podcasts and so far seems incompatible with the watch. I’ve even considered paying for a Spotify account to get the results promised by Garmin. The other reason I chose to buy the Garmin Feniz7s is the watch’s ability to track rowing both on and off the water. So far, this feature seems fairly accurate and I’m happy with the results. If Garmin is able to solve the podcast/music issues, I would be very happy with the watch. I’m conflicted because one of the main features that led me to pay so much for a watch, is not working.

Great but not brilliant
9 January 2023

After having a Vivoactive 3 (circa 2018) and a Whoop 3 and 4 (circa 2021 with free upgrade as part of the subscription), I thought Garmin would have caught up to Whoop by now. The general data availability has improved (body battery, training readiness, etc) but the sensors/monitors still just aren't as accurate. I'm also reasonably underwhelmed by the battery life. I get maybe 5-6 days using it on and off for smart tech (Bluetooth on during the day) and activity monitoring (about 30mins a day including GPS for ten mins), and that's with direct sunlight "solar charging" for 20-30mins a day. It then takes hours to charge. And a really small thing, but the strap is not super comfortable for small ('S') wrists - it's very stiff but maybe will soften over time. It works for most activities enough to track your overall fitness - which is why I wear these things! It's the same for Whoop, daily data is not always perfect, but trends of HRV increasing, RHR decreasing, run pace increasing, etc will all be accurate enough over time. And in the meantime, I can wear my heartrate strap when activity HR really matters. The watch itself is high quality and really beautiful, you can personalise the watch face, widgets, menus, etc. as per normal Garmin standards. Overall no regrets, but it's great.. Not brilliant.

Great features, significant learning curve
14 June 2023

The watch itself is quite attractive but I was not prepared for it to be as bulky or heavy as it is in person since retail locations only have dummy watches. a slightly smalller, thinner version would make a huge difference. The battery makes a big difference in comfort. After a couple nights, I was forced to buy a third party band to make it comfortable enough to wear, particularly at night. It is disappointing that there are so few band options available that can work with this model. I like the buttons, because they make it difficult to accidentally turn the light on and therefore it is good for situations where it could be distracting, but I also found memorizing what they all do to be more effort than I have energy for right now, so I mostly just use 2 and need ... MoreThe watch itself is quite attractive but I was not prepared for it to be as bulky or heavy as it is in person since retail locations only have dummy watches. a slightly smalller, thinner version would make a huge difference. I bought it not for athletics but to track energy levels in regard to chronic illness. I hope to some day use it for hiking, swimming and travel.I am disappointed that it will only track a single sleep session per day, since I often sleep in shifts or require long naps to recover. It would be nice if this additional sleep, which is often better than what I get at night was included in the sleep metrics.

I ordered the fenix 7s thinking it was a 7s solar sapphire since all the 7s watches are on the same page on the play better site. I have since noticed that as one scrolls through the colors, there is a little color description which doesnt just say the color, it says the 7s type for each color. So, make sure you pay attention to that. The 7s was really pretty and seemed to be as described but I really wanted the extra storage the solar sapphire comes with. It took me 2 days to realize my mistake. As soon as I did, I sent the watch back. I didnt have time to learn all the features. This was my first smartwatch so it was a little overwhelming; it could do so much. It comes with a quick set up guide (I think 16 pages) but not an instruction manual. BLUF - Some great features but not so great display and issue with basic tracking.I purchased the 7S sapphire solar to replace my 6 sapphire. I had read a significant number of reviews that the sapphire solar display was very dim. Stopped in a store and the manager let me power up a 7 sapphire solar to check it. Didn't look dim at all. So I ordered the 7S sapphire solar right there. The Good:- Solar charging was better than I expected. Tracking a few activities in bright sun and I hardly lost any battery and some of those were over 8 hours in length.- The new built in watch faces are nice.- Size of the 'S' model definitely fits my tiny wrist better than the standard size. The Bad:- Dim doesn't begin to describe my experience. Display was great - bright sun. Anywhere else the backlight was needed and had to be at 30% or higher. This was in a house with the lights on.- The sleep tracking was also not very accurate. The last two nights before I returned it I wore it as well as my 6 (night 1) and Vivosmart 5 (night 2). Both nights the 7s said I slept 1:00 - 1:30 whereas the 6 and Vivosmart said I slept 8:53 and 9:15 respectively.- Band options for 20mm are incredibly limited. Compared to the band options for 22mm you can tell Garmin isn't too focused on the 'S' sized watches.Overall, I really like Garmin products. This one just wasn't what I hoped for or expected. Hopefully Garmin will take the 'S' sized watches more seriously and find a way to improve the display visibility without going to a more battery hungry tech like AMOLED.

I have only had this watch for a little over 3 weeks and have been pleasantly impressed. My first smartwatch was a Garmin Instinct 2 which I lost at a point in time & had been quite happy with it. That watch warmed me up to the benefits of owning a smart watch for my weekly exercise & outdoor activities. The cost of fenix 7S initially held me at bay, but that hurdle got crossed & I feel blessed to have one. So far, I have just used the regular smartwatch features for my exercise routine & daily living, and it surely has stood out as an improvement in the slightly larger screen & clearer text for reading. Also, the layout & size of the data fields is better. One shortage both watches have had is in the heart rate monitoring. Also, the layout & size of the data fields is better. One shortage both watches have had is in the heart rate monitoring. If one goes from a low heart rate rapidly to a high rate it seems to take 7-10 min for them to catch up & be close. But to get around this I found wearing a chest strap monitor for those activities took care of that shortage, which I have used for years by itself. Looking forward to using it for outdoor activities in the coming months hoping I continue to find it being a big step up from the Instinct 2 in how it tracks & shows my progress, with the display of the data fields and how it interacts with my Mini 2. Only thing it lags behind the Instinct 2 is the battery life but considering what I get for it I would not go back now that I have tasted the upgrade. It almost looks like a dress watch & since I have a smaller wrist size, I was glad for the 7S which fits well. I am hoping the Sapphire glass proves out to be good for scratch resistance since I keep things for a long time. At this time the negatives others have mentioned about the glass/watch have not been an issue for me. At this point I have nothing bad to say regarding my experience of it & am hoping for that to continue.

The solution was to delete my Bluetooth for fenix S Solar on my phone settings, not on the Garmin Connect app, then reinstall it. Bingo! It finally paired. The only other change I wish I'd made was to get the 47 mm face instead of the 42mm.

Now, the report requires, i.e., resting for 72hrs! As a 67 yr old, I’ve found that my best “fitness” routine is a workout ethic of 5-6 days/week, so “resting” isn’t an option! In other words, I’ve ignored the resting requirement, and I’ve continued with my workout routines! More to follow as I get more data gathered for a better fitness profile!
