$188.22

(291 reviews)

Most cycling accidents are caused by traffic coming from behind. Therefore, extra security to warn you of approaching traffic from behind is no luxury. With the Garmin Varia RVR315 Rearview Radar, you can see traffic coming up behind you. The Varia RVR315 sees traffic from behind up to 140 metres and instantly notifies you on your paired device. The Garmin Varia RVR315 works together with your Garmin Edge bike computer, Garmin smartwatch and even some other brands' bike computers. Because the RVR315 has both ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity, you can also pair the Rearview Radar with your smartphone. The Garmin Varia App will then notify you on your smartphone about traffic coming from behind. With the RVR315, the Garmin Varia Rearview Radar is now available in a version without rear light, unlike the Varia RTL515 Rearview Radar. This way, you have the possibility to use your favourite rear light, but still see the traffic approaching you from behind. The RVR315 also offers a solution when you don't have much space on your seatpost. The Garmin Varia RVR315 Rearview Radar has a battery life of up to 7 hours.

A very useful and reassuring safety aid

I already had enough rear light so didn't need the more expensive one. Sometimes, especially if there's wind, a vehicle can get quite close before you hear it. This warns you when they're hundreds of yards away on a straight road, gives some idea of the approach/overtaking speed and usually tells you if there's more than one. It's so far been very reassuring, and I haven't had any false alarms or vehicles appearing without warning.

Brilliant piece of tech

I absolutely love this piece of tech. I synced seamlessly with my Wahoo Roam and the visual and audible alerts on the Roam are first class. I ride a lot on country roads and this provides a good 5 second early warning of approaching vehicles. It especially helps on those dirt road rides where you might prefer to ride on the crown or in a set of wheel tracks without having to be constantly looking over your shoulder.

I use a FLY6 rear-viewing camera, so I didn?t need the light.Half way through my first ride, I was hooked. Main reason: I glance at my Garmin Edge 530 often thanks to riding with a power meter (Vector 3). I realized that with every glance, I was getting an instant traffic alert. I figure that knowledge pays for the device. Knowing for some of the time, whether or not cars are behind you is better than not knowing for most of the time. Some details:- The mobile phone app works well. By connecting with Bluetooth, it works in parallel to the bike computer. I can?t hear the beep from my Edge 530, so I pair my phone to my hearing aids. The wanting sound is not unpleasant. I can live with it, but the feature isn?t needed on busy roads, so I?ll likely use it when riding alone in the local hills and on rural stretches.- The phone vibration option has no effect. I can?t detect the vibration through my jersey so I just turn that off.- Varia pairs with Garmin?s own smart watch, but there?s no iPhone Watch app. That could use the haptic feature. Hope it?s in the works.- The dots can be configured to appear on the left or right of the Edge 530 (and higher models).- The color over-bars can be removed if they obscure the Edge screen, as it does for my cycling dynamics.- Turning off the Garmin will also turn off the radar. Nice. But turning on the Garmin doesn?t turn on the radar as it does on the larger Varia model. The forums claim that it should. Need to investigate.- The most important item on my list to figuring out how to mount both the Radar and the Fly6. It?s a must-do. The Fly6 has been indispensable. I?ve used it to report dangerous drivers to the CHP.- My integrated seat post isn?t a great shape for the Varia mount due to the aero shape. Not Garmin?s fault. I need to experiment with attaching it under the saddle.I think The Varia315 is great value for the price.Hope this helps.

Excellent piece of kit
30 March 2022

I have been using this for a month in conjunction with my Garmin 530. Easy set up and connects ever time. I got this as a safety tool and it does not disappoint, beeps when a car approaches and the slider show how close the car or motor cycle is behind. Robust and waterproof. Comes with the Garmin Varia seat post quarter turn mount (so don't buy an extra one like I did!)

Excellent to whats behind
15 August 2022

This is an excellent addition to my garmin computer. So many times I had to strain my neck to see what was behind me. Also, on narrow roads I often had no idea what was behind me. This is a nice device to follow traffic that is behind without having to use a rear view mirror that often has blind spots. So far it seems 100 percent accurate. I also am not that naive to make turns without at least a glance. This device makes my bike rides that much more enjoyable

Fantastic road bike tool
26 June 2020

Highly recommend. Paired up to my Garmin 1030 and off for a road ride test. The radar identifies every single vehicle approaching from behind. Orange for slow and red for fast vehicles. Gives you plenty of warning to position yourself so they car overtake safely or you can indicate you intention to turn or manoeuvre. Battery life seams to great although I’ve only done 4 hrs with it and charge after each use. I’ve had no false readings if it bleeps there is a car! Highly recommended for suburban road cycling. No good in very busy city traffic

Great little device…
6 February 2022

Wasn’t sure what all the hype was about with these things. It surprised me how accurate the radar is, including picking up multiple cars and the distance from me. I have only had this for a couple of weeks now but I must admit it has made me more confident knowing when I have a vehicle behind me. I still check with a turn of the head occasionally to be safe, but very impressed with the accuracy. I also purchased the more secure mount for my bike, rather than relying on the black bands that it comes with. I would recommend the mount being purchased with this unit. I also chose this unit over the one with the integrated light as my lights work well together, so why change it.

Great piece of kit for safety and piece of mind
8 October 2021

This is outstanding! Connected straight to my Garmin Fenix Pro 6 (GPS), and worked straight away. Picks up on vehicles coming from behind, and is able to discern the number of vehicles in the line. Really easy to hear with the initial alarm, and a very simple to understand interface for speed, no., and distance from you. Doesn't interfere with other functionality of my watch. Absolutely recommend for anyone that commutes and/or trains on the road.

Like having eyes in the back of your head!
27 November 2020

I love the Varia Radar, it's the next best thing to having eyes in the back of your head! With the alerts and visuals on your head unit you can see how many cars are behind you and also judge how fast they are approaching. My only gripe would be the elastic retention bungee was stretched to what I feared was near snapping point around my aero seatpost. However, I resolved this by purchasing an aftermarket clamp that attaches to the rails of your saddle, this has the added bonus of keeping things tidy without upsetting the aesthetic of the bike.Overall a great little gadget and well worth the purchase price.

I bought this 3 weeks ago and I can’t imagine cycling without it. I can tell long before a car gets anywhere near me that I’m being approached by said car. It’s basically eyes in the back of your head which these days is essential. It has survived torrential downpours and connects to my woohoo bike computer which gives a side animation of a car approaching so you can gauge how far away it is. It also changes the colour of the animation depending on how fast the car is approaching -amber for a normal speed and red for if the car is coming up fast. I’ve attached mine to the back of the pannier rack using a holder. If you have a pannier rack you will need to look for one of these online to attach it otherwise the pannier rack blocks the radar.
