You will end up with a sopping wet mass.Upon experiencing these issues beginning nearly immediately after installation, I did contact GE Customer Support and was basically told that these issues were common with this machine and essentially there was nothing that they could do. The representative suggested that I literally stand by the machine as it neared the end of the wash cycle so that I could "catch" if it was not going to spin properly and stop the machine myself, attempt to rearrange the items inside and start the spin cycle again. This is absolutely not practical for a busy household of seven.Honestly I feel completely mislead and unsupported and will never personally buy anything from GE again and will encourage others to avoid the brand as well. This could all of been changed with proper customer service and a business that stands behind their products.

We've had this machine for just over two weeks, and I must say, it is probably the best machine that we have ever had. We had an LG front loader before this machine and I thought it was good, but it was smaller, and the TRU Balance feature was not so reliable. After the LG front loader threw an LE error, we actually got an LG top load with an impeller. What a joke that machine was, don't even bother getting that machine. I want to give a shout out to Greg and the other gentleman working around 11 am on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the Lowe's on Eagle Rd in Meridian Idaho, in the appliance department, for going above and beyond, the customer service was outstanding. Anyway, you can actually hear water splashing when washing clothes/sheets on the towels cycle and choosing the more water option. We washed a pair of cal-king sheets along with a pair of full-size sheets and chose the max spin speed option and the matching dryer had all of the sheets and pillowcases dried in 20 minutes using the towels cycle and the more dry option. I hope that they last longer than the 6-7 years that the LG front load set lasted.

Barely 3 years old and no longer works.

The seal malfunctioned. After this, I noticed clothes getting RUINED by bleach due to the dispenser cup immediately releasing the bleach in to the clothes before you can even push play. On 4/9/2023 (5 days after extended warranty expiration) the door error persisted and now the load won’t start, has a continuous click click noise - sometimes locking the clothes in the machine). The labor and parts to have a tech come out are ridiculous. With some research I found multiple buyers having the same set of issues, one suggested that the door lock component may be damaged and in need of repair. We found an OEM replacement part and replaced the coo lock mechanism. We replaced the lock and started a load immediately with no issues of the click click or the load not starting at all. One load was washed successfully at the end of the second load the locking and unlocking it the door mid cycle began and then locked the clothes inside completely. It’s really sad that old model GE washer I had frok 2013 to 2020 was a workhorse that never had an issue and within a year of having this machine I’m having issues. At this point I can’t wash anything and will likely have to purchase a new washer.

Excellent washer

This is my first front load washer and so far (almost 2 months in) I'm very impressed. The basket is very large (like a double washer) and can accommodate so much more than I was ever able to in any previous washing machine I've had. The booklet gives examples of the amount of clothes to add in a wash and it was just unbelievable to me at first. It cleans my clothes much better than any top load washer I've ever had. This was obvious to me with the first load. It's also a much larger machine and I needed to make my space a little larger to accommodate it, so make sure you measure your space. It is very easy to use and quiet, with a little tune when it starts. Before this purchase, I was warned about a mold problem common to front load washers. It is very easy to use and quiet, with a little tune when it starts. Before this purchase, I was warned about a mold problem common to front load washers. This washer has a venting setting that automatically sets up for you to start after you've removed your clean clothes and closed the door. It will periodically go on and off for 8 hours unless you turn it off. My machine is always dry, no moisture, no smell. No leaving the door ajar after each load, no wiping it dry. The door can also be put on to open either left or right, which I'm told is not a common feature, but one I needed. The only issue I had was that the machine was not delivered with the door latch on the side I ordered. It was an inconvenience, but nothing major, I still used the machine. I had to wait 3 weeks for someone to come and change the right to left door opening and the repairmen had no idea how to do it. My advice is to make sure it's correct when it is delivered because they can change it immediately. I gave this washer 5 stars because it deserves it.

Fantastic Washer

Great washer. After going through multiple Maytag that broke or didn't work well shortly after purchase we decided no more Maytag and went with GE.This washer is fantastic. It handles huge loads , is super quiet, spins well and has an extra water button that adds an extra 3 gallons to the load. It's a front loader that actually adds enough water. The longest cycle we have found so far is 1 hour 32 minutes if you set it to the heaviest soil, prewash and extra rinse. Our old Maytag had cycles going over 2 hours. We normally just do bulky normal extra water extra rinse and clothes are done in an hour.Love the option for quick wash that only takes 20 mins too.Lots of options .The vent system seems ok , though we still just usually crack the door.It is nice that you ... MoreGreat washer. We need to toss everything in, not sort or worry about it and walk away...come back to clean clothes. This washer does it and does it quietly. The drum is tipped which allows you to pause and add clothes at almost every part of the cycle without draining the washer. It's really well designed. The microban gasket and other areas stay really clean too.The wifi connectivity is kind of wasted on us, but I can see some advantages to it.Overall so far we are loving this washer!!!We bought the set , put them on 7 inch pedestals. I think the 16 inch would be too tall for most laundry spaces and the drawers under the machines seem to increase noise..plus if you don't want to bend to get laundry out, why would you want to bend even further to get out laundry supplies from a drawer?I'm 5'7" and the 7 inch pedestals are perfect.Make sure if you install this yourself or get it delivered and installed that you do the pedestals at the time you install.Putting them on later would mean unhooking everything, reinstalling shipping bolts to flip the washer on its side etc . Much easier to do it when you put the machines in newDon't forget to save your shipping bolts in case you ever have to move the washer.Because of all our previous washer troubles, we did opt for the Total tech package. It gives you 60 days to return the appliance if there's a problem or you don't like it, and 499 for the year it also means that if a repair has to be done it only costs you $9.You have the option to add it for a second year as well. We got the washer and dryer set on sale so even adding the $199 still put us below what it normally sells for and gives us the protection. The nice thing about the total tech package is also anything else you buy is also covered under the same package. We bought our daughter a new TV and we have also purchased some other things like a TV for one of the kids, video doorbell, cameras computer supplies etc .All of it is covered under the same package. If you weren't buying a major appliance, it might not make sense to spend that, but since we were we decided it was worth it and a nice perk to have everything else covered too.Overall I would recommend this washer over every single other washer I have tried owned or seen!

Good at First...But Don't Buy! FLOOD WARNING!
24 February 2023

We purchased this model because of the OdorBlock system. It unfortunately does not work. We have had several problems with the washer stinking really bad over the past 2 years. We've contacted GE, used cleaning tablets, tried manually cleaning the machine, and we clean the water out of the bottom pump every month or so (as per GE's recommendation). The big issue for us is this drain pump and it's cap. Apparently, the drain pump has a serious quality control problem as the seal goes out on it rather fast (within 1-2 years for a lot of people). This gasket caused our floor to flood and ruined our floating wood floor. Now we're having to replace an entire floor just because of GE's lack of quality control. This gasket caused our floor to flood and ruined our floating wood floor. Now we're having to replace an entire floor just because of GE's lack of quality control. Search GE's replacement parts website and read the reviews for the replacement part with this model # WH11X29539. It's nothing but 1-star reviews for a reason! GE forces you to buy an entire pump assembly just to replace a little rubber gasket that costs pennies to produce. Because of their design flaw, you'll be dishing out $82+ every time this gasket goes out just to replace a specialized rubber seal that you can't buy at home improvement stores + whatever it costs to fix your floor. GE knows about the issue with the little rubber gasket and yet they don't allow you to buy the rubber piece or even the cap separately. Instead, you have to buy an entire pump that you'll never use just to get the piece you do need. By the end, you'll have several pumps lying around. Until this design flaw is fixed I cannot recommend this product to anyone.

How is this washer so good?
25 August 2022

I left a load of wet clothes overnight. On my old machine, I probably would of had to wash them two more times to get rid of the smell before drying. That was not the experience with this washer! So far I’m loving all of the functions especially the cycle for a quick load. I will note we also have the matching dryer and got the stacking kit. Our old models were next to one another and it took over an hour to wash and several cycles to dry. I’m not use to it but we have been caught up on laundry consistently since we’ve had this set. The alerts can be a bit redundant as it tells you when there is 5 minutes left as well as when the cycle has completed. I haven’t tried the delay start features but I have used the tumble option while we were out to prevent wrinkles. My only issue is that when you use the sanitize function it doesn’t tell you what dispenser you should put the liquid or powder in or what you should use. I thought they would of had a recommendation at the very least but it doesn’t specify it anywhere in the paperwork. I would love some clarity on this as well as some short how-to videos address the different functions. Wifi connection took a bit of work as the first few tries it wouldn’t connect. Restarting our modem did the trick though! Sometimes with places like Comcast, you have the option to allow or specify a connected device and the privileges allowed if you have any sort of restrictions set up for connected devices. I also notice our clothes are not ripping or tearing like our old washer did. Obviously you can do damage if you select the wrong cycle. Just pair like fabrics together to avoid issues as in, don’t mix jeans with tshirts because they will wash better if you separate the different materials by texture. I also had some whites with what I thought to be permanent stains. I treated the stains, did a pre wash, and regular wash and they are gone! I’m going to give it another go on some stained flour sack towels to see how white I can get them! Cleaning is so easy and there is no moody buildup. The venting goes for a long time so to save electricity we only vent for 5 minutes or so they leave the door open a bit. There has been no moldy buildup on the seal so far!

Initial Review

Having run 10 loads through this washer consider this review first impressions. Note: Make no mistake if you move this washer yourself it is heavy(like all washers). I highly recommend using the installation service if provided and if not you will need a good dolly, padding, and two able bodied individuals to do the job proper. I also recommend ratchet straps. Set up was straight forward and directions were adequate. I checked the unit once it arrived arrived and it was level so that saved some time making adjustments. Interestingly some hardware is in the washer drum separate from instructions. Read the instructions before setup - all of them. I had to slide the unit a bit to get it into place and it remained level during this process as well. Interestingly some hardware is in the washer drum separate from instructions. Read the instructions before setup - all of them. I had to slide the unit a bit to get it into place and it remained level during this process as well. Several settings available. Not whisper quiet in spin mode but quiet enough. Setting up Wi-fi can be a bit cumbersome and I am not sure its justified with limited functionality; basically you can start a load remotely but you have to turn it on at the machine and it will notify you prior to and at completion of a wash. The ventilation system is a nice feature but if you don't want to use it open the door to make sure any remaining moisture evaporates. Without the riser or drawer the unit is low to the ground and might be difficult for some to reach the back of the drum when removing clothes(universal with all machines regardless of brand). Overall first impressions are very positive. The washer cleans well, doesn't smell odd thanks to use of the ventilation function, and will wash big loads with little issue. One thing I did notice when washing a very small load with a pair of blue jeans was the unit struggled to balance it for a proper spin so the clothes were a bit wetter than I expected but this is far from a deal breaker.

Terrible washer. Run away.

We decided to splurge when moving to our new house, and get a set of these because we needed full size stackable for our space and run frequent loads with a family of 6. Unfortunately we had them delivered and installed 6 months before we moved in, so by the time it malfunctioned after only one year of use, the warranty was already gone. Minor problems were occasional leaking, the door often popping open and pausing the cycle (always at the beginning of loads), and the frequent need to run 2 or 3 spin cycles to get things to not be sopping wet (usually small rugs or blankets). But then came the LOUD constant metallic grinding screeching noises whenever water was being pulled into the machine….so loud that we couldn’t run it whenever someone was sleeping in the house ... MoreWe decided to splurge when moving to our new house, and get a set of these because we needed full size stackable for our space and run frequent loads with a family of 6. But then came the LOUD constant metallic grinding screeching noises whenever water was being pulled into the machine….so loud that we couldn’t run it whenever someone was sleeping in the house (kind of a problem for working mom of 4).We called GE and were told there was only ONE certified repair shop available to us…a company with a one star Yelp review who hung up on us after we asked why they couldn’t tell us the base service charge for coming to evaluate it. (They said the service call fee before parts/labor would be anywhere between $75 to $250, but wouldn’t tell us how much until they got here). We used it for another 6 months despite the screeching noises since no repair could be coordinated (the noise was awful, but it still cleaned clothes), but today I came home to a completely malfunctioning machine. SO disappointed in GE….both for not standing behind their product and assisting us, but also in building a machine at a $1K price point that can’t work correctly for longer than 1 year. We won’t be getting or trusting GE for any of our future home purchases. Look elsewhere if you want a dependable machine unless you have expendable income….we do not.

What we need, and what we use.

This review is for the GFW550SPRRS model. Our old washer started to leak and the door hinge failed (saged 1.0") and then it started to stop mid cycle. Service was denied in our area. This started the quest for a new washer. We have a large capacity commercial Speed Queen dryer to dry comforters so that's the story on that.- We needed a reversible hinge on the right side, not the left.- We needed to be able to wash full sized bed comnforters.- We needed to use less water as we are on a septic system.- We Do Not need Steam for "stained" or heavy soiled laundry. We use our 45 year old Maytage A612 and DE712 for heavy soiled smaller load stuff. The Maytag's agitator top loader beats out the stains on jeans and clothes really well. We use our 45 year old Maytage A612 and DE712 for heavy soiled smaller load stuff. The Maytag's agitator top loader beats out the stains on jeans and clothes really well. Yes, the old fashioned simple units do last, but are really inefficient. But, they run prefectly. But, the top loader cannot do large items well nor is the smaller Maytags dryer able to dry large items well. You need a BIG drum to get air through the clothes. We found the GWF550 front load model by accident as a scratch (here and there) and dent (one small dent). The 4.8 cubic foot capacity and features were perfect. Nothing we won't use and fewer go-bads as we call them (auto detergent dispensers and STEAM). Just the features we needed. We toss in TIDE pods easy enough for detergent control, and again, use an agitator washer for dirty Jeans and stuff. The cosmetics in no way impact the service life. A few well placed swipes with a black magic marker (ancient Chinese secret on cosmetic repairs!) made the scratches disappear on the dark blue color. So far so good. The unit is seemingly louder than our older front load unit but, it is more the kind of sound, not the SPL of the sound. This unit can trick you into thinking it is a GE turbofan engine and not a washer! Since it never took off, I figured the right GE division (nor GE anymore) made it.Normal wash cycles are about 50 minutes, same as the other unit. Front loaders use the clothes dropping onto each other to push the detergent through them unlike agitators top load designs, so more time is needed, no surprises there. Even the newer HE design top loaders use the water pressure, they do not have agitator, and are also longer cycle so if this is an issue, look at the agitator top load designs for soiled clothes and faster cycles. The agitator design is harder on clothes as the trade-off. Dirt jeans and old T-shirts don't care!I still need to figure out how to set-up a custom "normal" cycle that uses the Max spin speed to better get the water out of the clothes, It is cheaper to spin it out that waste electricity drying it out. Now, I just change the spin the MAX after I select the normal wash. The seal drying feature does run awhile. Eight hours, with the accompanied wiring now and again as the drum spins. We still dry the inner door and seal before we turn on the VENT system.Switching the door was simple enough, and a huge benefit in iout set-up. The dryer is on the left with a left hand hinge, so the washer on the right needs a right hand hinge to prevent you from having to awkwardly lift clothers over the door. The controls are all TOUCH and are easy to use. The placement is pretty good as a cat walking on the unit won't step on them and turn the unit on (why do I know to mention this!).As far as installation, the unit is meant to use a set of hoses that are RIGHT ANGLE angle at the washer so the lines come "up" to the threaded coupling and straight through or right angle at the wall (depends on how deep your water spigot are in the wall well). So don't buy straight through for this unit. It will impact how well you can tuck it against the wall if you need that room in FRONT of the unit and to not waste it behind the unit.OK, so it works, for now. Our old unit was supposed to be a 30 year unit! We got just 14 years out of it, and three of those was with the door sagging and you had to lift it up to close it, only to have it leak all over. This unit was less than 1/3 the price (we gave up on longevity after the Maytags went away) so we figure 10 years and we are money up. Seems wasteful, but this seems to be the "game" today. We feel taken advantage of by the previous front loader, and it was EXPENSIVE for just half the rated use. The service left our area to make it even worse. With GE, we will have local service if a repair is reasonable and can advance the units life. If a door seal last seven years, the repair is good for another seven for a reasonable price is an example. For use, the GE fit the bill and the repair percentages are about equal between the GE and other front loader in the same price range. Since the units aren't made like the old Maytags, the quality are designed out on purpose so three stars. Value can't really be establish this short into it, so three there too. The DESIGN of the GFW550 is great, but the intended construction is not as robust as it could be, and where it needs to be for yes, a 45 and going life (don't expect the new Maytags to last like this, though)! Oh, the cosmetic appearance is pretty good for an appliance that is just supposed to clean clothes, so if you laundry room is a focal point of your house, this GWF550 looks nice,
