I received this product free from Influenster in exchange for my honest review. My boyfriend was truly surprised when I handed this to him. He had the biggest smile. It has some weight to it but he didn’t seem to mind. The storage compartments that it comes with are extremely nifty! It could hold matches or lighters perfectly and comes with paracord string inside. It isn’t sharpened so you do need to do that yourself which was fine for him, he loves sharpening his own tools. It has a convenient case that goes over the axe head which is perfect for keeping it safely tucked away and once the case is secure you can hand it up out of the way. I was thrilled that he liked it so much!

Don’t let the fact that this review is part of a promotional exchange mislead you—there’s genuinely nothing bad to say about this axe! There’s a rope attached, and it’s great that it’s waterproof. The axe is quite heavy, but the weight is perfectly balanced, exactly where it should be. The handle is rubberized, ensuring a firm grip and preventing slipping. All in all, my husband gives it his highest recommendation, and respect to the Gerber brand!

The Gerber Bushcraft Axe is a great camping tool. Its rubber comfort grip and deep reliefs on the hammer head make it an easy tool to handle. The axe measures 26in long and roughly 5lb. The axe is great for splitting wood for campfires. You can leave the axe in the camper year round or take on longer excursions where you want to build a shelter. Some bonus features are the 102” of paracord and water resistant compartments for storing lighters and fire starting materials protected at the end of the handle. Lastly, the sheath is secured by a velco strap and has an eyelet to hang the axe from a hook in your storage cabinet or garage.

I was looking for a hatchet that was a little longer than your typical hardware store variety, but not as long as an axe. Your Bushcraft hatchet in coyote fit the bill perfectly. I haven't really used it yet, but it looks like it will do what I want. It feels solid, and the hidden compartment for parachord and firestarting material--or a lighter--was a bonus. It will definitely accompany me to the beach, where I'll use to split wood for fire pits. I ran into a minor issue on my order, and Gerber resolved it quickly. I would buy it again if I I had to, like if I lost it. Highly recommended.
Okay, so I know axes and this is one axe that everyone should stay away from.I received one as a gift and at first glance, I was quite excited about it. It is a nice length and weight (if not a bit unbalanced towards the head) and seemed to be made of high quality materials. When I put it to work is where my initial opinion was crushed. On my first swing into a 4" diameter piece of Dogwood the storage compartment at the bottom of the handle popped out. I reinserted the compartment and assured that the button that locks it in place, was indeed in place, and swung again. Same thing. Every time I reinserted the compartment, it would pop out again as soon as I swung the axe at a piece of wood.Well maybe I had a bad example, so I simply removed the storage ... MoreOkay, so I know axes and this is one axe that everyone should stay away from.I received one as a gift and at first glance, I was quite excited about it. I reinserted the compartment and assured that the button that locks it in place, was indeed in place, and swung again. Same thing. Every time I reinserted the compartment, it would pop out again as soon as I swung the axe at a piece of wood.Well maybe I had a bad example, so I simply removed the storage compartment (virtually removing the effectiveness of having it in the first place) and started swinging again to check the performance of the axe blade, which is really the most important part anyway. Each swing into the piece of Dogwood vibrated through my hand, into my forearm, and nearly up to my shoulder. When swinging an axe, the handle should take up nearly all the shock. Other plastic handled axes of similar design like the Fiskar line, do this fairly well, if not less than a good old American Hickory wood handled axe. The axe also didn't even do much damage to the piece of Dogwood. This is a sizeable axe that should be able to handle a 4" round of Dogwood quite easily, but I found that it just chipped away at the round leaving very small bits of wood after each swing, even those swings with two hands. After swinging away for a couple minutes I began to notice fatigue in my hand and arm not only because of the aforementioned vibrations, but also because of the unbalanced nature of the axe. It is VERY head heavy, probably in no small part because of the lightweight, hollow plastic handle. As the day was closing and darkness was closing in, I walked back into my garage, took out my files, and started to file down the chisel shaped bit (the bit is the sharpened edge of the axe for those that don't know) to see if I could put a different shaped bit on it that might produce an increase in cutting ability and threw it in my 4WD off roading bag along with my shackles and straps that I use when wheeling as a "just in case" axe. I haven't tried the axe since I put the new shaped bit on it yet, but I don't have too high hopes for it doing much to change the performance of this axe, but I'll give it a try.If you want a good, high performance, reasonable priced plastic handled axe, stick to the Fiskar models. Yeah they don't have the neat storage compartment, but you'll be much happier with the overall performance of the axe. Trust me, your hand, wrist, elbow, arm, shoulder, and heart (as well as your psyche) will thank you.
Purchased from the store. All their stock was in a locked drawer, loose where all have scuff marks. No biggie as I'm sure if you are buying this...it's gonna get more than scuff marks anyway. Every finishing touch on this axe is excellent. However, the blade has so much finish on it that the edge on it is dull. As this is a bushcraft axe, the edge is so dull that making a feather stick would be impossible. You would more likely to break your stick than get a feathering effect from it. Feels great in the hands with both gloves and no gloves. I bought this for the weight and I was not disappointed. Most 5lb axes are mauls. This has a very nice axe profile without the maul design.
I really wanted to like this axe. During my first use, the bottom of the handle where the slide out is, broke. The bottom cap came apart and caused the spring that is behind the buttonon the slide out to go missing. I gorilla glued it back together but the spring is gone. It might have been a blessing is disguise though, because now it is easier to push the button to access the slide from the handle and it stays closed still while swinging. It also was pretty dull initially, but sharpened nicely. The swing and ergonomics feel good I would have gave it 5 stars if it the in handle slide out felt quality and did not fall apart. I plan to still use the axe, but it didn't live up to the Gerber quality I expected... I would recommend if you are okay with the handle ... MoreI really wanted to like this axe. Most of the reviews I found online would, normally, steer me away from buying this axe. I decided to buy it anyway because of the price, size, and color. I sharpened a small arc of the blade on a rectangular wet stone starting with 600 grit at about 30 degrees. After exposing a sliver of raw metal (previously covered in black paint) I then sharpened that section with 1000 grit on the wet stone. I’m a beginner at sharpening blades, so I was pleased that the sharpening resulted well enough to split large pieces of would in the five bundles of wood my group bought. As I used the axe more, the black paint start to wear away from the large section of the blade that you can tell was grinded at the factory and painted over in black. This made the axe look like what you would expect when buying more expensive brands. Overall, happy with my purchase.
Very nice lightweight and convenient ergonomic rubber comfort grip. The blade is machined to help with deeper cuts. It also has a hammer head and over strike guard for safety. My favorite feature is in the handle. It has a storage section when you take out the handle with a paracord included and a space for a lighter. Its great to add other fire starting needs. The cover for the blade is really nice and easy to put on and take off. The hanging hole is good for storage. We will use to chop wood for our backyard firepit. This is good for campers as well as home.
