A good way to have both a small axe and small saw with you. Mine is in my vehicle as part of an emergency kit. Gerber makes good products.

This product is the best for someone who is hiking or dirt bike riding. It is light weight and easily fits on your belt. The knife is really sharp and you could easily scale a fish or other food source if needed. My husband said that if he had only one tool that he could take with him on a survival quest this would be the one tool he would take with him. The price was excellent and affordable to someone on a fixed budget. It was the only product that I could find that I could get my husband for Christmas.

Love this combination. I carry it on my chainsaw chaps for driving wedges. The hand saw for chainsaw recovery (pinched bar⦠oops).
This is my goto blade combo for my day pack, the hatchet is perfect for field dressing sternum and pelvic splitting. If the animal is large enough to be a problem for smaller blades this unit is PLENTY TUFF. The knife has done several elk and deer, is the perfect size for working inside the chest cavity and still holds a razor edge. The magnetic storage for the knife in the handle makes the unit extra safe to carry in my pack.
Well this handy little axe is super light and easy to carry it takes little space and is great quality made in Finland with quality steel that holds a fine edge but not big enough to do medium or heavy work its good for a back packing or hiking well suited axe to start kindling chop up small fire wood make a spear or cut string rope for making a shelter or hammering tent posts things like that I have a 17 1/2 Gerber Finland made axe thats more suited for medium work but overall perfect for space constraints or weight constraints witch the 14 Gerber or Fiskars axe would be close to the same thing with a slightly longer handle more like a hatchet but would barley fit into a back pack so this 9 model is the smallest available but packs a big punch for its size. Thanks Vic
I usually use this hatchet to chop and cut kindling. It is perfect for smaller campfires. It has a very small form factor and seems really durable. I use a dual-grit Lansky Puck to sharpen it and it holds a pretty reasonable edge but let's face it, it is not a Gransfors Bruks or Wetterlings but it gets the small jobs done. The only real gripe I have is that the rubber retention strap that holds the knife in the handle can slip off sometimes during use but then again, they recommend that you remove the knife before using. I also predict that the retention strap will dry rot and break eventually.
Tidy little axe, really solid feel to it. Gives confidence that you can rely on it and that it will take a beating and come back for more. The handle does actually feel really grippy, it's not falsely advertised. Nice hammer head on back of axe. The pull saw hidden in the handle works a treat and is as good quality as the axe. However, it only got four stars because of the plasticy rubber retaining ring/cup that holds the pullsaw inside the handle - it really could have been designed better, it feels like it's going the to be the first thing that breaks (and easily too). It really needs a better locking mechanism, it lets the axe down imho. The holster feels as solid as the axe, the only difficulty being that getting the axe in and out is made more difficult by the stupid pullsaw retaining bit, you catch it every time - it feels like it going to damage the retaining ring if you force it by even the slightest. So, axe & pullsaw & holster = fantastic, but rubber bit = feckin awful :P
I ended-up eventually ordering another manufacturers product that only weighed 11oz, compared to this things 19 or so oz.For the type of cutting you're going to encounter in the field. While hunting anyway. You won't gain anything by this tool being a slightly heavier tool. Now, that having been said. It's a well made product and I use it sometimes to split chords of wood for the fireplace at home. And I keep it in my truck. But while hunting, I use that thinner, lighter 11oz one. I wrapped Tennis-racket Hockey-stick grip tape around that ones skeletonized handle and the cushiness that grip tape provides is like gold when actually having to use a backpack hatchet in the field.
I bought this hatchet about a year ago, and since then it has held up really well. It is only 9 inches long but you can still split and chop whatever you need to. The grind on the hatchet makes it super easy to sharpen with a wetstone. The knife in the handle of the hatchet is a great bonus and slices and carves well. It is held in the handle by a magnet and extra cover. You do'n have to work about losing the knife because of how well it stays in the handle. The back of the hatchet head can also be used as a hammer. Super great little tool, and I couldn't be happier with it. Except for the sheath, it is a little bit too bulky and large.
