I had a gimbal previously which had served me well, however when I saw this one I thought it was time to move to the fluid head. Very well made as you would expect from Gitzo. The adjustment and clamp knobs are big enough to use whilst wearing gloves and are robust. The adjustment on the plate is easily done and the balance of the camera is great. The movement of the head is very smooth and can be overridden with a snatch movement before the fluid kicks in again. Highly recommend one of these.

I bought this in April after looking at other fluid head options. The Gitzo appeared to be and has turned out to actually be an excellent gimbal head. I bought it for video shooting and it works very well for this purpose with my telephoto lenses. For small lenses I use an inexpensive pan/tilt head.It is very easy to get the exact amount of tension I want for both tilting and rotating the read. Much easier than with any other head I have used. Tool-less adjustment of the support platform is another feature I like, and one shared with my Custom Brackets gimbal head.With even my 600mm f/4 lens mounted there is enough tension to keep the lens from crashing down when I remove the camera should I forget to lock it all the way (the Custom Brackets has a flip up lever ... I have used a Triopo Gimbal head with an Arca Swiss Plate for 15 years and never once had an issue. I decided to upgrade to this Gitzo head (to match my tripod) and am now panicking every time I attach my gear which has FALLEN OFF the bespoke Gitzo plate three times in the first week. Only quick hands have averted a $20,000 disaster. Expensive gear should not create this sort of anxiety.

The Gitzo Gimbal fluid head looks very impressive and very large. In reality it is not physically larger than other heavy duty gimbal heads. The head includes a Gitzo tool-less mounting plate that has two 1/4" and one 3/8" mounting screws - perfect for the foot of my 600mm f/4 lens.There is a safety pin that needs to be removed before using a mounting plate. It blocked both my Wimberley plate and the Gitzo plate that comes with the gimbal head - go figure.There is a single locking lever to release to adjust the height of the mounting plate depending upon the size of the lens being used. I wanted a gimbal head to support a big telephoto lens and would work well for vidos. The Gitzo does this very well and I have been using it for most of my still photography as well.The dampening is with grease and one could use a lighter weight grease to get faster movement but this would not be an advanage with video and seldom of real value for still photography.The only con with this head is that it is large and does not break down for travel. For travel I use a Custom Brackets gimbal head which is the best still gimbal available.
I shot with this head the last 2 weeks with wolves and bears. The head is good and solid giving a stable platform for my 600mm lens. When shooting video, it gave smooth stop and go as well as pan. Easy to adjust. My one complaint is the arm is way too short for shooting video. I wish it were built like most fluid heads with an extendable feature. I do like the removable feature because when transporting it in the truck it would be way too bulky. Fix the short arm and this would be a 5 star rating.

The lever that allows you to raise and lower the camera and the lever to tighten the wand are in locations that make using them a bit on the inconvenient side.Here is an afterthought on the movement of the head. If you expect to take your index finger and spin the gimbal that will not happen. It will not move. Same with up and down motion.Hopefully this reviewed was helpful.
I like the large locking knobs. The handle can be useful and can be easily removed also with no tools but it is light plastic. The fluid feel is great and very smooth which was my main reason for purchase. It does seem a bit large and bulky on my Gitzo systematic tripod but looks good with matching finish. I was annoyed at the arca clamp which fell apart on me on the very first use. It seemed to me it was never assembled properly and I had to figure out how to put it back together using a tiny wrench. I havent used it much since but so far it is holding together now. The whole clamp seems a bit cheap, but maybe only because I have never had a clamp fall apart on me. Good solid build and very smooth operation. However, within just over 6 months the camera support bracket became increasingly loose from the horizontal spindle. Rather than loose the use of it, I dismantled it. The bracket is held by 3 small countersunk screws. There are no locking washers. I don't recommend a DIY repair and I don't consider the design of construction is safe considering the value of equipment which is mounted on it and the purpose of the equipment; to prevent unwanted movement.
As a wildlife photographer when I need to support the weight of a Canon 500mm F/4L II with/without Extenders, the damping feature of the Gitzo Fluid Gimbal Head allows me to use mode-3 Image Stabilisation and therefore the lens and camera is able to track moving targets faster without having to put up with a 'wobbly' image in the viewfinder.Also, I am able to mount/unmount Extenders without immediately needing to rebalance the gimbal and lose valuable time achieving the shot. It doesn't flop like a Wimberley or conventional gimbal which I also find feel too loose in use by comparison.I find it very smoooth, silky, and confidence inspiring to use.
