I purchased this to go with my GT5543LS tripod and GH4383LR ball head. The build quality is exceptional. It is incredibly light. The Gitzo ball head mounts perfectly on it and there is a set screw to keep it in place. Truly a must have for Series 5 tripods.

A worthy addition to the Systematic 5 tripod. Obviates the need to fiddle with the tripod legs until you get it right. Adds some height to your tripod in the event that you'd need it. Well made, looks like it was made for the tripod and was. Action is smooth, finish is fine. Does what it was designed to do with no extraneous frills.

While a Center Column is supposedly one more thing that can vibrate, the convenience of making small adjustments in the height of the rig outweigh this minuscule drop in stability.
Absolutely amazing quality, you get what you pay for. Gitzo are the best manufacturers of professional camera tripods. I have 2 Gitzo tripods now a large 5 series systematic and a small compact travel version. I will never need another in my life as these are simply amazing and.very tough. The center colume gains the extra height to reach over fences for motorsport photography.
Do not usually use any tripods with a center column due to rigidity concerns, but this one coupled with the series 5 tripod is as solid as a rock. However, have not used it raised to its full extend. mainly used to tweak that final height adjustment a few inches.
Pros: Superbly made, light but strong. Good finish.Cons: Not cheap.
There's noting earth shattering about this Rapid center Column, but I love that it fits perfectly in my ancient series 5 stuff and that it utilizes carbon fiber to weigh considerably less than the metal equivalents. Functions as desired; light, stiff, and smooth.
Adds versatility to the tripod without compromising stability. Pricy, but worth the cost.
Gitzo products are of good quality and expensive. The only complaint I have is I was expecting Systematic series 5 would imply the tube would match the 41mm diameter of the leg segments. But instead, the tube measures only ~35mm diameter, so that is a let down for the $300. Not sure what was the thinking behind the choice of using smaller diameter, it can't be that heavier to go 41mm.
