Everyone's all about the TTL flashes these days, and as such the V850 doesn't get much love anymore. But if it meets your needs, it's an incredibly reliable, powerful, and versatile product (albeit not as versatile as the V860iii and V1, of course). And for people who are continually annoyed at the plastic Sony hot shoe that often breaks (though this has yet to happen to me on my many, many flashes (I might have a problem, but I digress)), this flash, being universal and not requiring the Sony MI Shoe contacts at the front for TTL, has a bog standard metal hot shoe that should be more durable.

I have just started learning to use a flash for creative as well as better photography. I have been around and back using TTL but always felt I wasn't really in charge of what my results would be. This flash has no TTL and I say good thing! The mode you will use 97% of the time is manual, and to be good at manual you need to learn how it works. I have found it is not very difficult to learn, once you got the setup protocol done it is time to just fire away!!! If you want to fine tune an effect or change to a different lens then reset it up no problem. This shooting with flash is really not so hard to do. I purchased two of these at the same time so now I can front/sidelight and back light with a system that talks to each over very well!!! I also love the slide in ... MoreI have just started learning to use a flash for creative as well as better photography. I forgot to take the AA batteries out of one of my old flashes and battery leaked all over it!!!! I know people will not like this flash because they feel the need to have TTL and perhaps a few more bells and whistles, but if you just need a basic flash that is spectacular in performance and want to really learn the manual mode, this is the flash for you. It also operates as a commander, what more can you ask for the price???Rich

I love this flash and B&H had them on their Flash deals so I got two of them for less than the price of one!!!!!! I had only one problem and that is they sent it to me with the wrong kind of cable in it!!! This is a problem caused in part by all of the different changes in cables (USB) over the years, it got to be quite a mess for a while and companies were sending out the wrong cables with their equipment. The product should have a USB A down to a connector type C. What they sent from Godox was a USB A down to a micro A or AB which does not connect together!! I am sure this was a limited production error and it would cost Godox more to have them returned all those flashes instead of crediting the customer and letting them sell them at a low cost!!!! B&H on the other hand has all these flashes they have to liquidate. One would think they could just swap out the flash cables but then the product is devalued as a Open Box for B&H, not a good move on their part. I feel B&H did the right thing and discounted the product significantly, they made a little cash perhaps and I got a great flash at a bargain basement price!!!! So now I have turned around and bought a couple of new cables from B&H at their usual fair price which still makes the flashes an exceptional deal. I do not know if B&H has anymore of these flashes left or if they got new shipment in. If you do order this and Godex sends with the kit the wrong cable you really need to document your case if you want B&H or Godex to give you a free fix or you simply return it, which is a loose/loose for everyone. So my advice is to check your box, report back here is you got an issue but most likely this has passed. The flash is spectacular and I love that it does not have a TTL setting because it forces you into learning to be creative with the flash, your going to learn flash photography much faster by using this system.Good luck!Rich
