Big sound in a small package

I'm moving to a smaller apartment, where my 4-foot-tall Canton speakers and the Sonos amps they require would take up too much space. After reading lots of reviews, I got a pair of Nest Audio speakers and set them up as left and right stereo speakers. They're $75 each, only 7 inches tall, and they're already far better than my Cantons, and they don't require anything other than a power cord and WiFi. I listen to a lot of orchestral music, which includes a very wide range of pitches. These speakers have no trouble anywhere in that range. I don't listen to music at volumes that would annoy the neighbors, but when I turn up the volume, what I do get is a full, rich sound. Everyone who hears them says the same thing: "That sound came out of those tiny speakers?" I have Nest cameras already and I read previous reviews that it i snot compatible with the old Nest software. I get that and I do have a subscription. What I did not understand is that the only way to review the video or watch live is on the Google Home app. So to watch on a big screen, well that is not possible on a PC. I did find a way to download an Android simulator for a PC to make it work however the software is severely limited. The name Google NEST implies that it is similar to other Nest cameras. It is not. They should have just called it Google Outdoor Camera. I am still wondering what Google was thinking by not making the video available on a web site so you can review it on a large screen. My 3 stars is generous compared to what I think.

I have several of the minis, I even have the Apple Mini. I enjoy the sound from all of these speakers and bought these bigger ones for my daughters because I was curious, but didn't want to spend the money on myself. I should have a lot sooner. The first night, as an experiment, I turned on the sleep sounds in my daughters room. It cycles through various relaxing sound. When I woke up that night, I thought there was a thunder storm outside, but it was just the Google speaker. The virtualization is incredible! I can only imagine what a pair of them would sound like. I wouldn't call them the best speakers EVER, but for that much money and the added benefits of Google assistant and home automation. I am VERY impressed.

I want to love it
11 January 2022

When it works, it's great. When it doesn't work, it's aggravating. Which happens quite often unfortunately. The Google Audio has surprisingly good sound quality and even bass, I placed it relatively near my bed and never have to go past halfway volume. When they work, the ease of turning on lights and such is extremely useful. I want to love it.However, the "Home" system seems to have quite a few bugs. When used as a Bluetooth speaker for my computer, phone, etc, it will randomly disconnect and refuse to reconnect until I unplug and plug it back in. I tried restarting the connected device to no avail, leading me to believe it's the Audio. This goes for the smart bulbs as well. But 90% of the time they only change one bulb, or it disconnects and Google gives me the standard "something went wrong" message.I want to love this product, if it worked without issue, I would recommend it to everyone.

Incompatible with standard home WiFi
14 January 2022

Was given 2 Nest Audios as a gift. I have very standard Spectrum modem and router home WiFi. These devices will not stay connected to the WiFi network, rendering them useless. I called Google Support once, delivered them everything they asked for (router config settings, model numbers, etc.). They said a "specialist" will look at it. After a week I called back. A rude Google Support member said the specialist is still looking at it and could give me no dates, timelines, or status. It has now been 3 weeks since I initially tried setting up these devices. I'm very frustrated with Google Support and these out-of-the-box devices, as I know my home network settings are extremely standard. So far, I'm very unhappy with these devices and the subsequent Google Support.

Interface awkward but great sound & solid build.

This speaker has great sound: the Google Assistant is easy to understand, and Pandora sounds fine. It was pretty easy to set up using the Google Home app. The microphone is *very* sensitive - I found this out when I was telling my husband how to use the Nest, and it actually responded to me through walls one room away. The thing I don't care for is the interface; maybe it's my error in setup, maybe Google is rigid, I don't know, but it only responds to the exact words "Hey, Google" - not, 'hello google', 'good morning, google', or even just 'google'. I prefer the more conversation-like interaction I have with Alexa; what can I say, I'm polite - I always say 'please' and 'thank you', it's just who I am. And unless I missed some setting, Google Assistant doesn't even ... MoreThis speaker has great sound: the Google Assistant is easy to understand, and Pandora sounds fine. And unless I missed some setting, Google Assistant doesn't even acknowledge these words. Another thing I can't understand (and don't like) is if we have to sign in to our Pandora account to use the service with this speaker, why can't we also access our saved/created Stations? In any case, these things aside, the Nest speaker itself is pretty solidly built - very heavy for it's size, so not likely to get tipped over or dropped very easily. The sound is great for me, a pretty even balance of treble and bass, so if you want the 'boom-boom-boom' you'll need to look elsewhere. I've had no issues with wifi, the Nest has never dropped a connection so far. The primary use in our house will be for listening to music, and for us it's great for that. I just wish it had the ability to connect to the older android phone I use as a media device; if nothing else, the Nest should have had an Aux port. Not much point to improving it's sound quality for playing music, only to cut off it's ability to do what even a $5 speaker is able to, which is play the consumer's own collection with ease.

Nothing compromised due to its size
10 November 2020

So far, I am impressed with the sound quality this Google Nest Audio speaker provides. I have had other had various other brands of home speakers and this speaker beats them out. I feel much more immersed in the music with this speaker. My first floor, where this is placed currently, is a little over 500 square feet and the speaker has no problem projecting rich sound. No issues with a lack of Bluetooth range either. I have had my phone in my garage before and did not hear any interference, the same with being upstairs. Should we decide to get a larger home, I would probably feel it necessary to get another speaker simply due to the range. What really impressed me as well was the simple size and weight of the speaker. The Nest is just a shade over 2.5 pounds. As far as size, I can easily hold it in the palm of my hand at just over 6 inches high, just over 4.5 inches in width, and just over 3 inches in depth. It easily blends into my home décor without consuming it.I do have a friend who owns a different brand of speaker, and we decided to compare them together since the Google Nest speaker is easy to transport. His speaker was much bigger and therefore had more room for additional sub woofers and audio components, however, it was about 3x bigger, so it left a larger footprint on the furniture. There was a difference in the amount of base that the Nest audio puts out versus the other speaker, but other than that, there was not much difference. I would recommend the Nest Audio for a homeowner that wants immersive music for a lower cost and doesn’t want to forfeit a ton of furniture space or visual appeal in décor.I do not currently have the Google Nest Hub to pair with this, but I am looking at adding it to further create a home audio system. Something to consider for the holidays!

Overall Satisfied with the Sound Quality
7 December 2021

I have had this Nest Audio smart speaker for a month now. Overall very satisfied with its performance. Installation and adding it to my Google Home app was very easy and took only a few seconds. It performs really well as a Google voice assistant. I have always preferred Google voice assistant over the other competitors, so I can be biased, but Google always have better answers for more questions and sounds more human and smart when tricky questions are asked. The sound quality is great. I have connected it to my phone too, so it can act as an external Bluetooth speaker. The music fills the room with good bass and high frequency and is more than loud enough for personal use. However, don't expect to be able to use it in your house party as an speaker. Sounds good for the money

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the sound. The bass is definitely more deep and richer than I expected.I really can't find anything negative to say about the sound quality. But, there are a couple things that bother me.First, I appreciate the option of turning off the mic. But, I do not like the orange light that stays on when the mic is turned off. This is especially annoying if your speaker is on your nightstand in your bedroom. No one wants a little orange light on all night.Secondly, it's disappointing that the speaker is not portable. Essentially it's made to stay in one particular place. Add to that, you cannot take it into the bathroom, as it is not rated to be able to handle the humidity that would come from a hot shower. The best audio yet!
11 December 2021

I've had a handful of Google Home and Google Nest devices in the past few years, all within the same studio room. They've all done an amazing job at their individual tasks, with the Nest Hub Mini being a great bedside smart-clock if you will. The Nest Audio has taken my listening to another level, as this room has no insulation, and therefore, sound travels straight through the floor into the room below. The Nest has a very 3D sound, and fills the room with highs, mids, and lows; all without bleeding into the room below. The bass was the first thing that I noticed, and it absolutely blew me away. It's insanely deep, and makes for a truly immersive experience with the right music. Great work, Google!
