A lot of reviewers have complained about the fact the OnHub only has one Ethernet LAN jack. I really don't have an issue with that. Many users already own an Ethernet switch, or an existing 4-port router in their home or office that could be pressed into service. So simply run a patch cable from the OnHub's Ethernet out jack to a LAN switch located in an out of the way location, or inside a cabinet where all the wires are all kept out-of-site. The 4-ports provided on most routers are too few to be of much use anyways. I have a 16-port gigabit switch located in my den, where it and its connected wiring spaghetti are all kept mostly out-of-sight. I think that Google is on the right track here. I was able to place the OnHub out in the open in my family room, where it was closer to where we actually use our portable WIFI devices and provides better overall WIFI reception. As an EggExpert I have tested a lot of high-end AC routers in the past few years and the OnHub has so far provided the fastest, strongest, most consistent WIFI-AC connections to our various laptops, tablets and smart phones, as compared to any other router I have tested to-date. I ran the OnHub concurrently with another $200 WIFI-AC router. When I pull into my driveway after work, my Android phone automatically seeks out and connects to the stronger OnHub WIFI signal. My wife has noticed that her Android based Nexus-7 tablet now has a more stable Internet connection via the OnHub. Our previous AC router would cause the signal strength indicator to continually rise and fall and constantly drop connections to her tablet. The OnHub feels more like being connected to a hard-wired Ethernet connection than it does to WIFI. The OnHub automatically optimizes and determines the best frequency band and channel to use for a given WIFI device connected to it . If you are a power-user, I guarantee that you will be totally frustrated with the OnHub's lack of an onboard web site and the associated myriad of settings, that you would normally be able to tweak via your desktop or laptop browser. I subtracted another half an egg for this missing feature. Hopefully Google will add a built-in web site at a future date. Also if you don't have access to an Android or Mac smart phone you should take a pass on buying an OnHub. On the other-hand if you are a new-user, a technophobe, or Mac user, I can highly recommend the Google OnHub for its setup simplicity, fast WIFI connections and ease-of-use. If you are interested in using the USB 3.0 port for NAS storage, or the ZigBee home automation, or the Smart Bluetooth features, I would hold-off purchasing an OnHub until after Google activates these and other promised future software features. Highly recommended; provided the reader is aware of the device's current feature limitations.

I own 3 of the On-hubs for our 4000 sq ft home and we have great coverage. I bought 2 and though they covered the house from end to end. But since our cable modem is on one end of the house, I found that there were a few spots where wifi wasn't working as well as I would have liked. I have it setup in a mesh configuration and with 3 in place we have great, fast coverage throughout the house. I looked at the Google Wifi devices but I was able to buy these for less money and they have more antennas and offer better coverage. I like the app to control the devices and it gives you plenty of information to know how your network is performing. I also like that I can setup certain devices to cutoff automatically based on a schedule. Now I can cut my kids computers or game ... I also like that I can setup certain devices to cutoff automatically based on a schedule. Now I can cut my kids computers or game systems off to be sure they aren't on them late at night. The setup is simple and once you have the first one done, setting up the second one was simple and the mesh networking works great. I had multiple networks in our previous house and you had to switch between them. With the large mesh network I stay connected where ever I am in the house and it automatically switches me to the closer access point. There's no drops or issues with the hand off. The device can handle up to 100 devices. with our thermostats, Google assistants, smart plugs, phones, Roku devices, Chromecasts and computers we have over 35 devices at any point and time. It works great even when we are all on devices and streaming videos. Since getting these 3 months ago I now only regret not doing this sooner. They work seamlessly and stay running. We haven't had to reboot them or had any issues with them. They just work as promised. I would recommend these for any size house or apartment. For larger houses start with one to see how much it covers. It is very strong and covers a large area depending on the layout of the house. If there's any downside I wish I could manage the network from my computer. It only works from the mobile app. I use my computer all day and it would be nice to be able to see the setup from a larger screen. Other than that minor complaint these things are worth the money.

Firstly, I want to note that while the packaging was extremely well done, there really aren't any instructions that come along with it. While that largely isn't an issue, I couldn't find anything anywhere that specifically stated how you remove the outer cylinder (which you have to do in order to take off the anti-dust plastic wrap and plug in the various connectors). For documentation purposes, I want to state that the outer ring has to be twisted off in a counter-clockwise direction. Other than that, all you have to do is download the OnHub app (called Google On in the play store) and it will walk you through the rest. Now that that's out of te way, I want to state that this is simultaneously one of the easiest, and one of the most frustrating routers I've ever ... If you look at it from the perspective that Google initially designed it for (great wifi/easy setup/elegant design) it scores high marks in all of those areas. The problems come into play when you step ANYWHERE outside of those three things. As stated above, practically every other feature that the onhub has that is meant to compete or beat most other routers is simply NOT implemented right now, which means if you buy it right now at full price, you're buying an incomplete product. I can live without most of the features, but the speaker and the USB port are a real slap in the face. Why would you go to such great lengths to incorporate a speaker into your router design if all you're going to use it for is part of the setup process? That's absurd. The USB is even worse, as that's something implemented in nearly all routers at every level of market today. The least they could've done was mention that the USB is currently not usable for network storage on or in the box. There are bound to be a few frustrated purchasers as a result of that. Finally, the lack of ethernet ports. Even the Apple AirPort Extreme (which this is clearly meant to compete against) has THREE ethernet ports available on the back. How could this have been so easily overlooked? Of all the things this router does wrong, this is probably the smallest problem, but also would've been the easiest to fix. As far as wireless/ease of use/elegant design are concerned, this thing gets five stars. However, until Google decides to update the software to fully implement all of the potential features of this router, I'm forced to take away two eggs. I'm very close to taking away three, but it DOES do what it's meant to do extremely well. I just wish this wasn't so half-baked.

I setup the 3 units that I purchased to make a mesh network. The firmware version was so old on these units (probably been in the warehouse for a few years), that the Google Wifi App didn't quite work per the instructions when trying to setup a mesh with them. The Google Help line spent a lot of time with me, but ultimately didn't figure it out. But I did, as I sat there waiting for them and searching around other posts online. No one provided clear steps on how to fix it, but here's what I ultimately did to get everything meshed and working. 1. Plug one unit in, and follow the instructions to set it up as your Primary. The phone app will get stuck on the Updating Software screen. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes (an hour would be better). The update must be huge. ... Eventually exit the setup on your phone app, and start it again. If the update completed, it should skip over the software update process pretty quickly this time and get you to the part where you name your network. Everything should work fine for that unit from that point forward. 2. For the next unit that you want to mesh, the problem is that the phone app will keep getting stuck on the same screen telling you not to mesh these units. If you go to their website instructions, the alternative method ends up in the same place every time. The problem is the old firmware. So you first have to update the software by following Step 1 above (like you're setting it up as a primary). However here is the trick, it needs a WAN (modem) connection to access the internet for the update. So I do recommend having a small ethernet switch that you can plug into the 2nd port on your real primary unit, and then plug the unit you're setting up into the switch to get its internet access for the update. 3. So follow Step 1 on your 2nd unit to set it up as a primary just so you can load the update. When you finally get to the screen that asks you to name your primary, exit the setup. You can power it off and unplug the cable from the WAN port. 4. Now you can plug the power back into your 2nd unit, and use these steps to add it to your "meshed" network from the phone app: Touch the top menu item with the 4 dots; touch the "Network & General" option under Settings; Touch "Wifi points"; touch the "Add Wifi Point" button; follow the steps to add it to your meshed network. 5. Setup additional units to your mesh just like you did the 2nd unit. Make sure you have time to spend a few hours on this project, but the end result is pretty cool. I have my primary unit in my office next to my modem. It has a switch plugged in so that I can plug in my desktop, printer, laptop, etc. I have a 2nd meshed unit sitting on my TV unit also with a switch attached to plug in directly to any devices I have there. I have a 3rd unit plugged in our front bedroom to extend my range towards the front of the house. All the units are called blue, but it's a really dark blue that looks black most of the time. They have subtle blue light at the top, and I found you can dim or turn off using the phone app (great for the one in the bedroom). All my speed tests are maximizing my cable connection. So far I'm very happy with this setup, and this network is compatible with the Google Wifi hockey pucks should I want to expand the network (it all uses the same phone app).
Tired of having multiple wifi extenders that constantly drop I investigated mesh networks. I needed something that I could put the kids on timeout, prioritize wife's internet traffic and manage everything even offsite. The OnHub ticked those boxes for me. I bought one to start with and I am super impressed. Previously without the extenders I would get POOR (11Mbps) wifi signal in my bedroom from my main router. With the OnHub (located right next to the main router) signal is EXCELLENT (72Mbps on phone) in my bedroom. My home is an old brick home. The parental control (time limits, Safe Search) are great features to keep the kids safe. I can prioritize my wife's device when needed (like when kids are streaming). As someone not staying in USA, yes the AC adapter is rated 220v also so all you need is a US to your local plug converter for it to work. The app also does not have any localization limitations. I read old reviews where people complained about not being able to set DHCP range, DNS or IP address of the device, this is not the case with the latest firmware (that installs automatically when setting up the device). Would I recommend this product - for someone with beginner or intermediate IT skills and wants something that you can "set and forget" then I would say a definite yes. For someone who wants more control on their router and loves Mikrotek devices, maybe give this one a pass. For me this has been a great purchase that I definitely do not regret.
These are great for people who want good range, security, speed, reliability, and simplicity. If you like to tweak every setting in your routers or use custom firmware, these aren't for you. If you have no need for a mesh network, setup is easy out of the box using the required app. These also work great in a mesh, especially with a wired backhaul, but the initial setup is a pain because the units have to first get the latest firmware before they can be added to a mesh. The review before this one from 'Philip G.' goes into great detail on the procedure to update the firmware to use a new OnHub in a mesh. I did it a bit differently, however. I didn't use a switch. The review before this one from 'Philip G.' goes into great detail on the procedure to update the firmware to use a new OnHub in a mesh. I did it a bit differently, however. I didn't use a switch. Basically, I connect a new OnHub directly to my modem, configure it as if it were the primary/only router via the app, let it get the update, then I reset it back to factory defaults, remove it, and repeat the process for each new OnHub. And just like Philip G described, the update gets in a loop where it appears to never finish, so give it about a half hour before aborting that process. But once each OnHub has the new firmware, adding them to your mesh with the app is a straightforward process. If you're wondering why getting the new firmware is so complicated, it's because when these were first released, they weren't designed to be used in a mesh. That capability came later with a firmware update and unfortunately they're all shipped with the old firmware. Be aware that the TP-Link OnHub has a dozen antennas to provide good coverage in all directions, but in addition, it has one big antenna aiming out the front, so if you need extra coverage in one direction, aim the front of the router in that direction.
Even though the 2.4Ghz signal is transmitted in all directions, there is the fact that the strongest 2.4Ghz antenna is on the front, this makes the 2.4Ghz band somewhat directional. This could be a 'pro' or a 'con' depending on your layout. 5Ghz, on the other hand, seems to broadcast equally in all directions. This router is extremely 'hands off'. This is another one of those things that could be a 'pro' or a 'con' depending on your needs. While I struggle to imagine a router that is easier to set up and use, there is very little that can be modified in terms of advanced options. Overall, this device fills me with mixed emotions. I am blown away with its design elegance, build quality, and ease of use. I also give it high marks for reliability and WiFi signal ... Those elements make it a solid wireless router but there are plenty of those on the market already. Nearly all of the competing high end wireless routers include functional USB NAS support AND more than one LAN port. This router COULD distinguish itself from those by offering features that none of them have access to (speaker, Bluetooth, Thread/ZigBee), but it currently does not. That leaves me disappointed...and hopeful...and disappointed...and I hope to use these features someday but for now I just have an expensive, albeit reliable and good looking, wireless access point. If you buy this router now, you will get a reliable, good looking, super-easy-to-use, high performing router. And that's not bad, but the device is priced for features that are not currently functioning. Maybe someday they will be enabled, maybe they won't. Maybe when they're enabled they will work great, maybe they won't. It's a bit of a gamble at the moment and there's little information out there about what we should expect. If all features were currently enabled and functioned well I would give this 5 eggs. If those features are never enabled then it deserves 3, maybe even 2. Because I TRUST that those features will be enabled soon I give it 4. Don't let me down, Google.
I purchased a TP Wi-Fi Extender from Best Buy in Oct. 2023. Paid about $75. Less than two months later, the product went totally kaput. There had been a thunder storm but no other appliances in the house were affected. I've been trying to work on a replacement but the TP customer service is a rat maze and to do anything requires use of Pay Pal (no way) and of course, your credit card. Warning.....products is junk and service stinks.
The onhub is one nifty router. The packaging was very nice and all of the cables were neatly rolled off on the bottom. Setting up the router was a breeze. I simply had to twist off the outer shell, connect the ethernet cord to my modem, and retwist on the outer shell. Upon downloading the app (It's called Google On in case you're searching for it in the Apple Store), it will help you sync to the onhub and set everything up including wireless network name and password. The app is available for both Android and iOS and you do need to have the app to manage and set up your onhub. The onhub router itself looks really nice. It has a sleek feel to it and comes across as being high-end. The cables are under the outer shell and allows for a cleaner look. The only drawback is that there is only one ethernet slot to plug something into, but I guess the assumption is that future devices would all connect to the onhub wirelessly, so there really is no need for any additional hard-line plug ins. There are some basic speakers with the onhub which allows for it to make some noise during setup, but other than that, there really is no need for the speaker / sound feature on the onhub. As a router, it works very well. I've found the range to be sufficiently strong to reach my entire house (as compared to my older router from 3+ years ago requiring extenders). To date, I've connected several devices to the onhub (2 printers, 2 PCs, 2 laptops, 2 phones, 1 tablet, 1 scale, 1 wireless camera etc...) and what's nice is that it allows for the automated prioritization of the devices in terms of granting the devices that require more bandwidth better access. All said, the onhub looks great, is easy to set up, has great signal strength, and will theoretically automatically update as Google releases additional features. Do know that you'll still need a modem (it's not an all in one), so it does require some additional wires / devices connected to it to be functional. Overall, a great product that I'm really happy about.
