I have been using a Canon HD camcorder to record video for the last five years. I noticed that the edges of the video where somewhat blurry and the FOV wasn't very wide, even when fully zoomed out.I purchased the HERO 2018 to replace that camcorder and I'm very happy that I did! If you're aware of this, you can easily adjust for it by starting recordings a little earlier, but if you want to capture an unplanned event RIGHT NOW, you're going to miss a few seconds at the start.- Microphone - The placement of (one of?) the microphones means that, if the camera is held by hand without a case, selfie stick, etc, your thumb or finger will likely cover up or move around the area where that microphone is. This resulted in a lot of muffled videos (when the mic was covered), volume changes within a video (as the thumb/finger are moved while holding the camera) or scratching/scraping sounds being recorded (again, from thumb/finger movement on the case). I solved this by using a tripod or selfie stick so that it is not necessary to touch or directly hold the camera while recording.What I LOVE about this camera, though, is what makes me recommend it and happily continue to use it:- FOV - The FOV of the Hero 2018 is excellent! Even when set to "Narrow", it is wider than the widest FOV of the Canon HD camcorder that it replaced! There's also "Medium" and "Wide" settings which, while creating a fisheye effect, allow you to place the camera on a tripod very close to the action and still capture it all! With my old camera, when set on a tripod, I had to place the camera so far away from the subject that other people didn't realize I was recording and would walk right in front of the camera, ruining the video.- Weight - The Hero 2018 is much lighter than my old camcorder.- Size - The Hero 2018 is much smaller than my old camcorder, esp since the old one had a swing out screen. The screen on the Hero 2018 is a little bigger (and much higher quality) than the old camcorder, but it's all in a tiny package!- Ease of use - There aren't many things that you can set with this camera, which is good! Most of the default values record great videos. Changing settings is easy with the touch screen and really easy with the Android GoPro app! I love that you can do a live preview, too!- Battery life (and replaceable batteries) - I have multiple batteries for my old camcorder and none of them lasted for more than about 30 total minutes of recording. I also have multiple batteries for the Hero 2018, but I've never needed more than one, even after recording about 60 minutes of video in one day. When I know that I'm going to take the camera with me, I do charge the battery the evening before, and I usually only record in 1-5 minute segments, FYI.- Water resistant - I was always worried with my old camcorder about it getting wet. I do most of my video recording outside and I don't have a choice in the weather, so getting rained on is a very real, and all too common, situation. I've been pleasantly surprised that rain on the glass covering the camera sensor hasn't shown up in the recorded video! Yay!!!

I have a Hero 5 session GoPro of my own and I love it, so I knew this would also be a great camera, and I was right!! The touch screen that shows the video being recorded is really helpful to see how your film will come out. Navigating the screen to watch your videos or view your pictures is very easy to use. I wish the sound quality was as good as the Hero 5 session, but its still a pretty nice camera. The best pictures I've taken have been on a GoPro, and the photo quality is amazing. I also suggest buying GoPro's "The Handler" if you are purchasing this product. The Handler is the best grip I've used for my GoPro, and it makes filming much easier. I love this brand for action cameras and intend on staying with them.

I liked how it performed in a dry environment but when I took it in the ocean and diving in the springs there was condensation on the lens. This is supposed to be a waterproof camera. I took it to a Best Buy where I was on vacation. They told me that condensation sometimes that I should have bought a waterproof case. The condensation didn’t hurt the camera but affected the picture. I ended up buying an inexpensive waterproof case online that works fine after my vacation but my diving video was ruined because of the condensation. If you buy this for use in water I recommend buying a waterproof case.

Unless you have a GoPro that is older or of lower quality than the GoPro Hero 3 BLACK edition (i.e. Hero 3 silver, Hero 2, Hero...etc), and unless you have never bought an action camera before, DO NOT BUY THIS.This camera is not worth an upgrade if you are coming from the Hero 3 Black and above. I owned the GoPro Hero+LCD and that thing, while being 4+ years OLDER than this camera, had more features than this camera. It has the same MP camera, same video modes, and picture modes. But it even LACKS some of the modes that the HERO+LCD had!!! If youre just looking to dip your feet into the action camera market, and don't want or care to spend too much for all the great features and simply just want a solid action camera. This is a good buy.But if you are anyone else, and just even a tad more serious about your camera quality or are looking to upgrade an old GoPro. Skip this one. Spend the extra money and get one with the stabilization (Hero 6 or 7 Black).
My beloved GoPro Session 5 died from last trip then I found by surprise, GoPro doesn't make Session any more. I chose Hero as an alternative and I am glad I got Hero instead. Session surely has a great form factor being smaller. But Hero offers almost same feature as Session such as voice control. Plus, Hero actually has a screen with a touch control. Using action cams for last 5 years, I almost forgot that camera can actually come with screen I can review and control. I also like the quality of the screen as well. For personal use, I don't think I need 4K. So, for the price under $200, I think this is a great deal and can't go wrong with what it offers.
Since it isn't a hero 5 black, but a hero 2018. I thought there might be some differences, but there isn't. Its firmware has been knowledeably reflashed and it works great. It came with a bunch of extras and a remote. I prices some of the extras and it is more than offordable to buy full extras packages and batteries together than shopping sepertley and paying shipping on other stuff and waiting for things to arrive. Battery life is waaayyy to short. Less than an hour. Thats my only disappointment.
I have the Silver 3+ and decided to upgrade. 4K, Wireless uploading and other options aren't necessary for me so I went with this camera to save some money. BIG MISTAKE.This camera's batteries are SO small, they die very quickly! You MUST buy additional spare batteries to continue filming. Screen stays on for min 1 minute before Power Save kicks in.I have the wireless remote to control my Silver 3+ when it's on my chest mount or helmet. IT DOES NOT WORK AT ALL on this camera. If it does, I have not figured it out yet. please leave me a comment.I know it has limited image sizes and FPS, so not reviewing that. Ok... This is basically one of the current entry level models to the go pro camera and it's my first experience using one. I really did not know what to expect. But the first thing which shocked me was the size. It's about the size 1" x 1 1/2" inches. I was blown away this could be so powerful in such a small package.As far as usage... Well it only took me about 30 minutes of toying around with the various settings to understand the features and how to really put it to work. So, there's no strong over head in the learning arena.One thing... Is you'll find the accessories you can garner for this product are plentiful. Good, It has awesome QHD recording for some really spectacular shots and video. I now wish I could have afforded the 4K model. But, going in I had ... MoreOk... The projected 12' x' 18' (1920 x 1080p) image is perfect. 4K would be nice, but the switcher and projector can only do 1080p. I tried lower end Action cameras. I tried 6 of them to be precise. I returned all of them, they just couldn't match the quality and consistency of this GoPro. This one can hook up to an external 7" HDMI monitor for Live Recording/Playback, the GoPro 3.5mm Mic Adapter for USB-C works on this even though GoPro states that it does not.
