a lot of the negative Amazon reviews almost swayed me NOT to get this camera. But I’m glad I took the chance and bought it because I haven’t really had any of the issues that most of common complaints seem to be. #1 don’t buy this thing expecting to take extremely long 1 +hour long 360 degree videos, it will take forever to render the video on probably ANY computer. #2 battery life. I bought this in the middle of winter, so I’ve only been using it in cold 10f weather and I’ll get 45 minutes out of one battery (not filling non stop, but rather taking all the short clips I could possibly need) I bought extra batteries and bring them with. I mean, how long do people expect these tiny batteries to last in what’s basically a compact COMPUTER that’s doing an amazing ... Again, if you’re taking extremely long 360 degree video footage, you’re going to be sorely disappointed trying to edit and make a usable video. Use this thing for shorter clips and you’ll be happy. That being said, I did have issues with the Quik app not working on my old android phone, the processor simply wasn’t powerful enough. Go pro should be a little more transparent in making sure the consumer understands that your phone needs to be “up to snuff” in order to use this software. That being said, I was long overdue to upgrade my phone, went with an iPhone, and the go pro quik app has worked pretty much flawless for me.Voice commands work great. Even outdoors with wind blowing and my 5” fat bike tires crunching through icy snow, I’m still able to use the voice commands on this camera.Oh yeah, if you don’t want your lenses to get damaged, USE THE PROTECTORS THAT COME WITH IT. That’s a no-brainer. Yet a repeated complaint I read about lenses being scratched. All in all, I love this camera and wish I got it sooner. It adds a whole new dimension when making first person POV video’s for things like mountain biking, or skiing. And if you get it and it’s not what you thought, return it. You have nothing to lose. The pictures I posted you can see my helmet Mount, that’s because I’m not using an extension to move camera away from base,

One day before a trip to Mexico, I was forced to upgrade from a Hero black 5 to this after I loaned my 5 to someone who loaned it to someone else. I was already in the process of doing research towards making a 360 camera, so this just expedited the purchase. This upgrade was much needed and made capturing moments of the trip better. The ability to show my field of view as well as myself without unnecessary wrist motion is underrated. Being able to change the point of focus during edits is amazing. The only cons I have at the moment is I'm not familiar with the app, so it will take some time to perfect my content. Also, as with every GoPro, you will need another battery.

I've been learning to use this GoPro for a couple months. I have a 3, 4 and a GoPro 9 as well. Overall it's a decent camera, but I'm not thrilled with battery life at this point. I took a 21 minute bike ride thru a forest trail in the 360° mode and by the time I stopped and checked the battery at the end of the ride, I was already down to 66% battery left. IF that worked out in a linear fashion, you'd only get an hour of recording time. And we all know batteries crash faster as they deplete. If you want to plug an external power pack into it you can, but the USB-C connection point is inside the unit where the battery is, so you'd have to ride with that door open and mount an external power pack on you somewhere with a cable running to it. I guess that's do-able if you need extended record time. The GoPro site is very vague about where to find a PC/Apple compatible software for downloading and editing. You don't find software for the Max on the GoPro site. You have to get it from either the Apple Store or from the Microsoft App store. Of course you can do it on your smartphone too if it's new and powerful enough. I found playing with the files more-so easy to do on my phone than my laptop. I don't have any 'name-brand' video editing software, but I read somewhere that it is compatible with several of the better known ones out there. You'd have to Google™ that to know for sure. So, I just gave it a 4.5 out of 5 since GoPro has a lot of issues with their website when it comes to finding answers or getting any help. The other weird thing GoPro is doing, at least with THIS camera is, when I went to their site to register it, well, you don't DO that any longer. I tried and wound up talking to a customer service person who wanted to know why I wanted to register it. I reminded them that I've done that with all my other GoPro cams and she said just hang on to proof of purchase (like an invoice) and if I ever needed warranty help that's all it would take. I just always though it made more sense to register a product when you bought it, but hey that's just me. Overall... I like it. I'm sure I'll like it better as I get used to differences this has from all the other regular cams.
I bought this camera exactly 2 years ago. And stopped using it after 3 months. My main purpose was to get an unusual images from my vacations. And soon I found the commercials are not truthful. Yes, the camera is really waterproof, I swam with it in ocean a dozen times. But nobody told me the GoPro Max is useless underwater! Being immersed even in 1 inch into water, it provides blurry unusable pics. The second disappointment is the quality. Even In sunny day, with cleaned lenses it doesn't provide a real 4K resolution. Sorry, it is not even close to GoPro 8 and higher.
First one I ordered elsewhere had issues operating from battery after the first day so I returned it and ordered from B&H. The 2nd one arrived in totally different packaging which indicates the 1st one was an earlier release. As I also recently discovered with my newly purchased Hero 9 Black, some recording modes unfortunately utilize the wretched HEVC h.265 codec, which is a pain to edit. Many older CPUs and GPUs don't have the hardware decoding ability so it will not work on such systems regardless of the software you install. For instance one of my i7 machines could import and play it but the older i7 couldn't even using the same software. The GoPro App will allow you to work with and export the footage, and Resolve 17, Lightworks Pro, HitFilm Pro (new version) ... Premiere Pro CS6 will not but apparently the latest rental CC version has a plugin for it.Capturing 360 video is an exciting new world and I'm looking forward to all the great things that can be done. At the very least it replaces having 2 regular GoPros facing opposite directions. The quality is good and it comes with extra lens covers. This thing is so much fun I'll likely buy another one when the price drops near discontinue time
The GoPro line suffers from a lack of improvement and innovation in the areas that matter. Like the newer Hero models, this also overheats even in 32*F weather. The software that is required to convert the proprietary 360 video to an editable format is only available through the Windows Store (or Apple equivalent) and contains numerous bugs which make the product unreliable for a video editing workflow. One week the app will be fine and I can render out my video, the next week the GoPro app will render out incomplete files, crash, or outright just not open at all. It's not reliable at all. The latest firmware for the camera is also buggy and will occasionally lock up entirely, requiring removal of the battery. The only benefit this has over the alternatives is its ... Got this to keep an eye on things while I commute by bike. Worked well all summer. My ride is about 6.5 miles, with 1 mile on roads to the trail, 4.5 miles on the trail, and 1 mile on roads from the trail to the office. No need to record my time on the trail, I'd turn it off once I was on the trail, but once the temperature started getting below 50F the battery wouldn't stay on when I turned it back on at the other end of the trail. Below 40F it doesn't stay warm enough in a pocket to be able to turn on again at the other end of the trail. So now I'm recording the entire ride, which means I'm charging the camera every day and manually clearing the card every other day to be able to record my rides. There's no way this would work for a day skiing unless I brought a ton of extra batteries and kept them stored directly against my body, or got mostly footage from the chair lift. I've also never been able to find a good spot to mount it on a bike - the best place is hanging from my left handlebar drop, but that keeps me from getting Bar Mitts on and off. So, I work with the camera's limits instead of the camera working for me. The 360 view is neat but it just doesn't work well as a commuter camera.
Great camera and excellent video! The playback is super crisp and sharp, surprisingly so.I've recorded using the chest harness and head strap, and each fits comfortably and performs well. At first, though, the harness attachments aren't very intuitive nor while reading the instruction manual, so I had to YouTube how to attach the camera to the chest harness. Some other flaws are the loading of the camera battery. Please read the instruction manual before opening and loading the battery. And to unlock the battery compartment was extremely difficult the first time and not very intuitive. Make sure you read the instruction manual or ask someone who has one (or ask a Best Buy professional, which I did).
