Love using GU, and I believe they have loads of history and experience behind their name to make them one of the most trusted names in athlete nutrition. I’ve always enjoyed the large variety of flavors, caffeine amounts, and amino blends in their energy gel lines to give me the flexibility to choose which gels fit my needs. For me, they’ve always been easy to get down, even During hard efforts, and I’ve personally never experienced any discomfort or negative side-effects from using them.I like most of the GU Energy and Roctane gels, but my favorites are Hoppy Trails and Salted Watermelon. Salted Watermelon is my favorite caffeinated option and again not overly sweet for me.

I know some people don't like GU, but they really work for me. The flavor varieties keep me wanting to fuel. I like the thick consistency, as I can sip it, rather than needing to slurp it down all at once. My only complaint is that I wish the basic flavors (eg vanilla and chocolate) came in caffeine free versions. Still, since the caffeine dose is low, I can make even the caffeinated gels work.

A tried a true for a reason

I haven’t used GU in a few years but am training for my first ultra and wanted something easily measured. The cola flavor is amazing and so different than what I was used to. The hit of caffeine is perfect when I have run a huge chunk and need a pick me up. Highly recommend for a change if your looking for something new.

Dessert-type flavors are better
16 August 2024

Fueling: I can't speak to how well this actually fuels me. I'm sure it's helping, I just can't quantify how much it's doing.Form factor: These are very small and convenient to open and consume while riding, even for me, a newb. These were my first gels and it was such a weird texture experience.Flavor: I originally purchased the strawberry kiwi, raspberry lemonade, and vanilla bean. I immediately disliked the fruit-based flavors because they do not mesh with the texture at ALL. The consistency is something you'd expect more for a soft-set custard (think creme brulee, not the frozen ice-cream type). Vanilla bean was good. I've since had the birthday cake and salted caramel, and I'd recommend those too. Any type of dessert flavor works with this texture.

Energy without Caffeine!

These energy gels taste great and give me a boost when I'm doing long cycling sessions or out doing hiking, but you don't have to be an athlete to benefit from them, even just moderate cardio can get you very exhausted. It's been difficult to find a good energy option that's caffeine free, but these were fantastic! When it feels like I'm getting tired and I'm thinking about needing to cut my adventure short, I open up one of these and within 10 minutes I feel like I'm back! My muscles come back online and I feel like I can keep going as long as I want. Definitely made a fan out of me!

I tried one and knew my search for a gel was over.

Firstly, I love the chocolate flavor when I'm running. I have a sweet tooth and my brain thinks I'm slurping down chocolate frosting. It's great. They sit well in my stomach and after consuming two cases of these, I've never had a **** emergency. Personally, I have one every thirty minutes as opposed to the 45 stated on the package. That works for me. It might not work for you.

Tried and true
16 October 2024

This is one of the very first energy sources I tried. Over a decade later it’s still relevant for me.Pros are it’s on the cheaper side, it’s compact and has a ton of flavor options.Cons are it’s quite thick so it can be a chore in cold weather. You must follow this with water for best effect. As I write this review Pumpkin Spice is available as a limited flavor and it’s great.

[Rewarded Review] Gu Gels. Wish my local store actually carried this
20 April 2024

Great product. Wish my local Academy would actually keep this product in stock. Every time I go past the nutrition section of my local store it looks picked over with empty shelves and empty boxes sometimes. It’s as if my store doesn’t really care about this section. That’s why I have to order online

GU Original Sports Nutrition Energy Gel is the energy gel that started it all. In 1993, Dr. Bill Vaughn developed the world’s first energy gel to help his daughter perform better during ultra-marathons, and GU has been helping to propel the world’s most successful extreme athletes to success ever since. GU Energy Gel sustains all forms of athletic activity with a highly compact, portable, and calorie-dense packet that is loaded with carbohydrates that can be rapidly absorbed. Branched-chain amino acids limit muscle fiber damage and increase speed of recovery, and extra electrolytes help maintain water balance. Some flavors feature caffeine to increase concentration. While the original formula has been tweaked and evolved over the years, the end result is still the same: GU Energy Gels fuel the best endurance athletes in the world. GU Original Energy Gel comes in a wide variety of good tasting flavors. Each packet contains 450mg of Amino acids, 100 calories, and at least 21g total carbs.
