I tie hundreds of flies each year for fresh and salt species. My go-to flies for any fish incorporate ice dub in some way or another. And that's just my point--this stuff is versatile. With an average length of 3/4-1", you can use it in so many ways. Dub it sparsely by hand for a tight, narrow bodied nymph or fry, spin it in a loop for bigger minnows and leeches, or tie a fat clump of it in to beef up baitfish patterns. The fine profile of these fibers gives them a lot of motion in the water, and it allows you to blend colors easily and trim the final product to shape without it looking like a buzz-cut.The ONLY downside to this product is that the length and stiffness is inconsistent across colors. The pearl tends to be ideal with 1" length and fine, supple texture. But the olive is short and curly, which doesn't lend itself to use in larger patterns. The yellow and pink colors tend to be long but stiffer.Overall, though, I have no hesitations about using or recommending this product. It's caught me a lot of fish.

Thanks for speedy delivery. Tying for the veterans at Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing and needed enough for the whole class.

If you haven't tried it, order some up. Especially the peacock. I substitute it in for natural peacock pretty much every time I can. I like using natural materials, but this stuff just CATCHES FISH, doesn't bust the first time it hits a rock and is incredibly easy to work with. It's also basically the only dubbing I use near the bead on midge pupa, except for superfine for when I'm fishing skinny water.Throw it in a dubbing loop, wrap it, stretch over a scudback, add a mono rib and trim the fibers to the hook point. Repeat 23 times. There, you just finished a season's worth of scuds. in two hours.

I ordered up the 12 color trout pack and have been extremely pleased with this dubbing. In the box/pack, it looks very shiny...but when you dub it out, the underlying color really comes through with just enough sparkle. It's great for simulating gills or even just as a general attractor. It would probably be a bit obnoxious as a lone dubbing on a heavily dubbed fly, but on the thorax, it looks great. (Then again, if you're looking for a cheeseburger wrapped in tinfoil look, it can do that too!) I haven't had any troubles getting it on a thread without wax...although I've found a little helps this stuff to be less spiky. If you're looking for a little bit of flash on those nymphs, or even a dry, you will find this stuff very useful to have in your kit.
I recently bought the trout kit and now i wish i had every color they have available. Some of these colors can easily be a perfect substitute for other materials that you either ran out of or dont like to work with. I regularly use their "peacock" and "black peacock" on nymphs ive been tying lately. Looks incredible, perfect subsitute. I dont like using peacock herl, so i use this stuff instead. As someone else mentioned, its not as easy to use as natural dubbing but, if thats an issue for you, use dubbing wax. I dont use the wax as its not difficult for me to use this stuff.
I use this stuff a lot. It is almost always on my desk rather than in a drawer. My favorite use is for adding flash to other dubbings when building heads on streamers. It's perfect for that role. Plus, the peacock is a much more durable alternative to the natural peacock.
I'm not a big user of ice dubs, but I had someone convince me to tie a batman with purple. I was pleasantly surprised that I could get a pretty tight noodle with this. The luminescence it provides in the water was outstanding. I'm starting to experiment blending it with some of my other dubs to add a little light.
I've used Ice Dub for several years now. Initially, I've used it for smallmouth bass and shad flies and ignored it for trout flies. But I changed my mind when I discovered Ice Dub being used as a dubbed body for a very effective sowbug on the Little Red River in Arkansas this past May. Ice Dub in UV light gray and UV tan attracted lots of nice brown trout. But the hottest fly had to be a sparsely tied wet fly that mimicked an emerger caddis. The thorax was dubbed in UV tan, UV dark olive, or brown-olive. My chat with the creator of this fly, who manages the Little Red Fly Shop, said the lavender or purple cast of the UV mimics the exoskeleton of the emerger. This fly took rainbows as well as browns the whole week. I find this dubbing creeping into a lot of my ties ... MoreI've used Ice Dub for several years now. I agree with the other reviewers that the fibers can be difficult to dub, esp. for small flies. But I overcome this problem by using a split-thread technique, mixing it with finer dubbing, or chopping it somewhat with a blade coffee grinder. Of course, a dubbing loop tames these fibes on larger flies.
Minnow belly Ice Dub is perfect for the under belly of many streamer patterns. I mix it with it with a little color to match the color of the streamer, eg, light olive dub plus minnow belly for an olive streamer.
The peacock ice dub (standard) is excellent for nymph collars, bodies or to add a little flash. Very easy to create a dubbing noodle and very little goes a long ways. A nymph collar takes maybe 8-10 strands, in some cases even less.

Hareline Ice DUB - Purple
Ice Dub is a synthetic fly-tying material that mimics the natural shine and sparkle found in the scales of baitfish. It's essentially a dubbing material with the reflective properties of fine mylar tinsel, which results in an ultra-bright and highly reflective dubbing material that can be used for creating various patterns. It's one of the most popular dubbings for both freshwater and saltwater, provides great sparkle, and dubs beautifully. Ice Dub is incredibly versatile and can be used to create various types of flies, from nymphs to streamers. The synthetic fiber is also highly durable and will maintain its shine and reflection even if you've been fly fishing all day. The material is relatively easy to use and forms noodles just like regular dubbing without any special tools. With this product, you can create realistic baitfish imitations to bring in more fish. Hareline ice dubbing material comes in standard and ultraviolet-reflective colors, which sparkle deep blue when viewed in sunlight. You can get the individual color packs, or purchase the Hareline Ice Dub Dispenser, which comes with 12 colors, including the popular UV pearl, peacock black, UV tan, pearl, and olive brown.
