Complete with a filter cloth, spirit burner, plastic stirring paddle with integrated measuring scoop and stand, the Hario TCA-2 is the perfect introduction to syphon brewing. If you're new to syphons, don't worry. As it happens, they've been around for more than a century, and as soon as you taste a coffee made with one, you'll see why. For coffee lovers and connoisseurs the syphon brewer offers a cup of unparalleled flavour, crisp, clean and sediment free, with a science experiment thrown in for fun. The principle of a syphon-system coffee maker is to heat water in the lower vessel of the brewer until expansion forces the contents through a narrow tube into an upper vessel containing coffee grounds. When the lower vessel has more or less emptied itself and enough time has elapsed, the heat is removed and the resulting vacuum will draw the brewed coffee down through a filter and back into the lower chamber from which it can be decanted. The beauty of the vacuum process is that the coffee is brewed by extended contact with water at exactly the right brewing temperature, the temperature is maintained throughout the process, and then the coffee is immediately separated from the grounds. The re-useable cotton cloth filter ensures that the resulting brew is clean and crisp, with a texture more like a tea than an espresso, french press, or stovetop coffee. Syphon coffee really does have to been seen (and tasted) to be believe.

Recieved the item with a separate box aside from the original box. Item was wrapped in 2 layers of bubble bag. All glass parts are intact. Havent used it since this is a gift, perhaps will update my review once the item is already used. Overall the delivery and handling is great. thank you and hoping to purchase in you shop in the future.

Awesome siphon maker. Brews a great cup regardless of ground size, so far I’ve done fine, course, and medium ground. The cloth filter is nice, I’d never used one before, though just make sure you clean it in hot water after each use. All around an awesome piece of gear to add to your coffee maker collection. Would highly recommend.

I wanted to buy this for some time now, but was not sure about it. I honestly thought it was a gimmick. Was I wrong about it. It elevates coffee making experience to a whole new level. It's fun to use, the coffee tastes better. I'm really glad I bought it.

It's excellent for it's price.

It's excellent for it's price. It's sensitive and accurate, and the smaller size does not occupy to much benchtop space. I used to use my kitchen scale to weight my beans and it takes roughly 5 minutes (due to it's sensitivity) and it's only accurate to 1 g. This little scale takes 30 seconds (max) and it's accuracy down to 0.1 g. Win win.

Item was scratched
10 August 2019

$40 for a mug? I’d expect quality. Took the plunge with this and was extremely disappointed with Alternative Brewing for sending me not only a mug that had scratches on it, but the packaging (cardboard box) was also damaged. Thankfully this wasn’t a gift else it would’ve looked completely unpresentable. Have ordered multiple items from AB and must say this was a huge let-down. Please rethink how your packages are being packed

First saw the Syphon while on holiday in Bali. Having stopped at a small off the track location, to be shown how they grow spice, coffee and other items. Was told of the local coffee Luwak, where fruit and coffee beans a feed to a Luwak. The poo is collected, cleaned and the coffee beans roasted. Was a fantastic, flavoursome brew. The flavours brought out by the Syphon technique. On returning home I had to get one and started my search. AB had the stock, the filters, the added extras and the price. So ordered I did.The stasifaction of making my first brew was great. The enjoyment of the science experiments meeting coffee making. It takes approx 5 mins from start to finish to make the coffee but the enjoyment and tatse are well worth the time. The syphon is made well and looks great. I didn't use the alcohol burning that came with it as I purchased a butane burning from AB to speed up the process.

Nice aparatus
28 January 2022

Its a nice, slow and interesting way to brew a coffee on the weekend.after 7 or 8 attempts so far, I have my method tailored for a consistent delicious cup.I am happy to stay with the alcohol burner for now. it does just fine once you fill the bottom bulb with hot water via gooseneck kettle. The footprint of this piece of kit fits nicely on a brew scale so water can be weighed if so desired.I would recommend getting either a spare spring with cloth filter assembly so that you have one standing by in case you forget yo clean it from last time.I would also suggest getting the paper filter spring also. (Waiting for those to come back in stock so i can have a more efficient clean-up )Overall, 5 stars.

So this is what it is like
28 January 2018

I have not been able to fully compare all the methods of coffee extraction side by side, but, clearly, there is a difference between the siphon, paper filter, soft brew and french press. I tend to prefer the siphon. I don't have the paper filter drip at this time. I have compared the other three. The siphon seems to have the fullness of flavor of the french press but it seems to be blended better. I don't know how to explain it well. But the difference is clear. But clearly a more involved process.

Works As Advertised
19 January 2021

Everything came as ordered and on time. It's smaller than I thought it would be (my fault for not double checking) but works perfectly for just me. I bought a different brand butane burner and it doesn't fit in between the stand so that's something to consider if you want to do the same. If you want to brew enough for guests, you'll need a much larger size.
