My 12 year old cat has been throwing up every time he eats for the past 10 years. I don't know how he's managed to keep a decent weight. He's had x-rays, blood work, and stool analysis. Nothing. The next step would be a scope exam and possibly surgery, depending upon what the scope would show. I can't afford that. I've tried five premium cat foods, all wet food and all dry food, feeding in very small amounts, withholding food for hours; nothing made a difference...until I started him on Hill's Science Diet Senior Indoor Cat Food a week ago. Would you believe it? He hasn't vomited once in the week he's been on the new food! After 10 years?? ! I don't know what this food has or doesn't have, but I know it's made life better for my cat and me. This update is because I recently tried another, cheaper, brand since Hill's didn't really solve the problem. HOWever, right away I noticed that my cats are producing larger, stinkier stools. I'm going back to Hill's.

I didn’t want to like this food for my cat, Chloe. She is having problems with hairballs. She is a very healthy 11 year old itty bitty Maine Coon at only 9lbs. I never ever have fed her a food WITH Corn Gluten Meal, as I happen to not like this ingredient. Well, I bought this foos as it is for indoor cats-check, for hairballs-check, and for cats 12+-check. Chloe also only likes chicken or turkey-absolutely no seafood-check, check. Well we received this food, and she ran to the bowl just as soon as she smelled it! She ate so fast, that I thought she would throw up! She loves it! This is a cat that has been a free feeder her entire life. She eats to live, she does not live to eat. A year ago my parent's 18 year old cat was looking rough. Grungy and boney, I went hunting for a food better suited to an aging kitty who needed some more meat on her and make her feel like herself again or it would be time to let her go.She quickly perked up on this 11+ food. All the other bags I saw in town were 7+ and focusing on maintaining a healthy weight, and she needed weight gain. This put her in better condition and she's sleek again. Soft again, whether she was stiff and sore or lacked the energy and desire to groom, she's feeling like a cat again and no more mats. She feels so much better. She may be slower than she was when she was 13, but she's regained that saunter and owns the house again. I would recommend this to anyone with an elderly cat. I have 2 old boys 16 & 17 , another 6 year old fat boy, and a 8 year old girl . They are all on wet food for 7+ 3 times a day in small portions , plus open bowl of the Science Diet hairball/ urinary track control food for my girl who hates wet food . I had trouble with fat boy over eating the dry and the 16 yr old couldn’t digest the large pieces . The 17 yrs old couldn’t chew it anymore so avoided the bowl altogether . I was dealing with throw up , cats crying Everyday … until NOW! What a game changer !! Science Diet 11+ has Small, tiny pieces and is HIGHLY digestible , totally made for old , OLD cats . No more throw up (other than for a rare hairball. ) At first they wanted no part of the new food. Over a week it became the only hard food out to eat. I have a cat who is a little over 11 years old according to the time he showed up here as a stray and how old the vet determined him to be at that time (six months old). He gets kind of finicky at times and also is hyperthyroid on the methimazole ear gel and seems to have food sensitivities and sometimes I have to change his food. Currently I am feeding him the Hills Science Diet Indoor Adult 11+, which has a bigger, triangular-shaped kibble, since Spot has hairball issues also, and I am also blending this one, Hills Science Diet Senior Adult 11+ in with it, so it will not be all the big kibble. The kibble on this one is nice and tiny, good if you have a kitty with dental problems or no teeth, and Spot seems to like it and so far seems to be tolerating it well along ... MoreI have a cat who is a little over 11 years old according to the time he showed up here as a stray and how old the vet determined him to be at that time (six months old). It's unfortunate, but I have to keep my 7b, 13 yr old in her own room because the younger cats were really harassing her and I was unsuccessful at stopping it, especially at night. But it did give me the opportunity to get her on food that's geared to someone her age. I was apprehensive about trying this because there were others who said their cat wouldn't eat it, and while I want to do what is best for her I can't afford to waste food. Anyway, she had been losing weight and hair, probably in part because of the stress. I've always fed her Science Diet (recommended, along with ProPlan foods, by a vet for another cat who developed crystals in her urinary track, apparently brought on by too much ash and manganese or magnesium, I forget which, that can be found in ... MoreIt's unfortunate, but I have to keep my 7b, 13 yr old in her own room because the younger cats were really harassing her and I was unsuccessful at stopping it, especially at night. I was apprehensive about trying this because there were others who said their cat wouldn't eat it, and while I want to do what is best for her I can't afford to waste food. Anyway, she had been losing weight and hair, probably in part because of the stress. I've always fed her Science Diet (recommended, along with ProPlan foods, by a vet for another cat who developed crystals in her urinary track, apparently brought on by too much ash and manganese or magnesium, I forget which, that can be found in many cat food brands; a different vet liked Science Diet because she said that what is on the label is what is in the food) and she never turned down any of their dry foods (though she doesn't care for all the can flavors), until this one. But just for context, she also did a potty dance when we tried a new litter once, practically crossing her legs while she looked beseechingly at us because she didn't know what to do (in that case we had to put some of the old litter in with the new stuff so she'd get used to it). Her old food nuggets were large and soft triangles, while the new food is very small, round, and firm. We'd had a change of nugget forms before, but she's getting more set in her ways as she gets older, and recent events don't help. So I put a little of the new dry food in with the old, very gradually reducing the old food and increasing the new every few days so that the smell of the new food became familiar enough that she eventually tried it, and now she eats the new food without any problems. I'd say it took her maybe 3 weeks (?) or so to make the full transition. YMMV. I still put 3 pieces of the old food in her bowl, which she always eats first, but it's kind of like a treat to her now.I don't know how much her current weight gain has to do with a reduction of stress, and how much is due to her change in diet, but I'm assuming it's a combination of both. I'm not sure how much it's affecting her coat because she was in a room with tile floors (had to switch rooms), and now her room is carpeted, but it does seem to look nicer. All in all, if you have an older cat, I'd recommend trying it. Just start out with the smallest bag until you know if your little one will make the transition.
My 12 year old cat was on Rachel Ray's food for the longest and although I never had any issue with that food, I noticed my cat getting older and moving slower. I decided that spending the extra money for Science Diet via Chewy.com was worth it due to the positive reviews that I had read about senior cats and this food. My cats fur is now so soft. He has been eating this food for about a year now and it took about a month or two to really notice a difference in his behavior and overall health/appearance. But man! Was it an obvious change!. I love the small pieces of the food as well that makes it easier for older kitties to eat and digest. Gabriel now plays around and wrestles just as well as the two year old cat that comes over to play. And I'm pinching pennies to put food on the table and live pay check to pay check. But I'm willing to sacrifice to make sure my cat is in top shape. And in the end, it reduces cost on vet bills and he is just a happier cat. Thanks Chewy for the good deals on this product. This website is the cheapest place for this food I think.
I found a litter of kittens with their mother abandoned in the desert. I scooped them up. Not as easy as said. Took them to the vet. they were in need of alot of attention. No one believed in poor Smokey. She was 19oz missing her back Paw and the other partially there. I've been feeding her Science Diet her whole life. Everyone today is amazed! Smokey digest and doesn't have any problems with the food. My only complaint I wish they would up the age group for older cats. A better formula for cats maybe 15+. I've enjoyed every minute with Smokey.
I have 2 senior cats around the age of 12-14. They were "rescues" so age is a guess. One is toothless. I have tried a plethora of cat foods over the decades & found many that the cats liked. Some they disliked. Some was good but so expensive I just couldn't continue. Recently I purchased an indoor hairball & weight control high grade food with great reviews about great nutrition, etc but 1 of my cats started losing a lot of weight. I was feeding this for several months but he just lost too much weight. He needed to lose some but he got so skinny I took him to the vet worried he was in end stage kidney failure. His coat got dull & rough looking too. He just seemed in poor condition. That brand is one that is highly touted & cost more than the Science Diet. His coat got dull & rough looking too. He just seemed in poor condition. That brand is one that is highly touted & cost more than the Science Diet. The vet checked both cats & they were fine. All blood work came back good. I asked advice about a good quality cat food that wouldn't break the bank. He recommended a senior formula & mentioned a few brand names including Science Diet. Over the years, nearly every vet I have used loves Science Diet pet food. When my pets needed special prescription food it was usually Science Diet. One vet I used for a while loved Royal Canin. I fed my cats that for a while (a Rx formula that crept up to $80/bag so I had to stop that). So I tried this Science Diet Adult 11+ food & my cats love it. The little kibbles in it are small enough that my toothless cat can eat it just fine. She has really never had problems with eating dry food. One review I read about this particular Science Diet formula was some cats didn't like it but mine LOVE it. My skinny boy cat started putting on some weight again (he needed to) and his coat is once again shiny & luxurious. I feel like they are getting good nutrition & I'm getting a good value for my money.
I got it for my oldest cat, who is about 11 years old and who appears to have some urinary issues. I have him mostly on urinary tract type cat foods, rotating them at times as he does not seem crazy about them, and I figured I would try mixing in a little of this senior food with his urinary tract food to see how he would react. If I give him too much of this, he starts to meow when he pees, so I only give him a little with his other food, but he does seem to like it. The pellets seem somewhat big, but he swallows them whole anyway. I tried it on the other 3 cats and they seem to like it, although they are not seniors so I will not be giving them this food on a regular basis.
