Best hack ever for building a RAID without breaking the bank. I use these drives in my OWC ThunderBay 8. They perform wonderfully, and the 5 year warranty speaks to the long life that these drives have ahead of them. Been using them for about 6 months now with absolutely no issues. The write speeds in a Raid 0 configuration are faster than most of my USB 3.2 SSD's. I do have an added layer of security by backing up my raid with a service called Backblaze. It's $7/month, and I back up my entire RAID monthly.

Bought 8 drives, two has around 5 years of time, the other six had only 2 years of uptime. No bad sectors or reallocated sectors on any of the disks.

Bought this from a competitor since Newegg doesn't have it on sale. I know its expensive but I'm satisfied with this purchase after doing my research and reading reviews about this hard drive online. This is probably overkill for what I intend to use this--storage of my Steam games. I have a HUGE Steam game library and even a 1TB SSD just won't be enough. This is the next best thing. I have another 4TB Enterprise HDD for my other important files. So far so good! My games are running smoothly. The migration of my data to this drive took almost a day using a disk cloning software (AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro) but everything went as planned. The benchmark above was done after I have transferred my Steam library to this drive so maybe that's why it didn't hit the 200+ ... MoreBought this from a competitor since Newegg doesn't have it on sale. This HDD does make audible seek/write/read noises but not loud--this is just normal for a HDD with platters. Not sure about the HelioSeal tech yet but so far so good for me. I'm even pleased I bought this from another vendor 'coz they packaged this hard drive by wrapping it first using big bubble wraps TWICE and then placing it securely inside the box. Much better than how Newegg usually does it. Thanks eServer Pro & 4M4Z0N! :D I know this is the SE (Secure Erase) version and not the ISE (Instant Secure Erase). But please, can someone from HGST reply and tell me how to do an ISE? I might buy that version next time. I know Seagate has Seatools to do theirs but I can't find one for HGST. My research led me to HGST site that says I have to use the "SANITIZE" command but doesn't show or tell how.

The HDD is in perfect working order, and it was packaged extremely well! First thing I did upon receiving it was check the S.M.A.R.T. data, and it has VERY low power-on-hours. Only a couple hundred, which is basically brand new. There are ZERO pending sectors, reallocated sectors, or other problems. Because this is an enterprise drive with a target of 2 million hours mean-time-before-failure, I have high hopes for its longevity.
Installed in NAS. Did a format. Added to array. Functioning as expected.
Just installed these drives today and so far so good. Good price and Just as described. Would buy from again.
HGST Ultrastar is the standard HD for data centers and businesses. It is durable and problem free, unlike Seagate and others. These traits were verified by a HD equipment testing company. HDs were run for a year, while "doing programmed pushups." In the end, HGST Ultrastars had the least problems and failures. Of course, Seagate was last.
These drives are extremely good value from SCAN as I have not found them as cheap anywhere else however that's not my main reason for purchasing 2 of them. These drives are designed to be suitable for a NAS setup running 24/7 but I am not using them this wayI was looking for the best way to archive reliably my huge family archive (Photos, videos and documents etc} taking up many Terrabytes of space. In my opinion HDD's are still the best way and easy to use method of archiving for reasonable costs provided that they are reliable and cost effective. These drives are made by the Hitachi company which research shows their drives appearing to have a a very low failure rate over time compared to others with the icing on the cake being the 5 year warranty these ... MoreThese drives are extremely good value from SCAN as I have not found them as cheap anywhere else however that's not my main reason for purchasing 2 of them. These drives are made by the Hitachi company which research shows their drives appearing to have a a very low failure rate over time compared to others with the icing on the cake being the 5 year warranty these drives come with. They have the latest technology (Helium filled etc) and have exceeded my expectations regarding speed, temperature, noise levels etc so far plus they seem to be of a very high quality.I use one drive for my archives and a second to mirror this archive by way of a particular Docking Station This may seem wasteful to some however ask me again in 5 years to see if my archive is still intact or if my opinion has changed which I doubt it will making this a choice investment.
This is a used, outdated drive without SMART features. You can use it but it has few problems:1. It gets heated real fast.2. If you disconnect it while active you will corrupt it and lose data. Then you will need to chkdsk it if you know how to do it. The data will stay lost.3. It gets inactive even while you transferring files. It will require reboot of the whole system to get it back.All-in-all the savings are not worth the troubles you will have with this junk.
works. passes all test. looks like very high use drives with years of continuous service. mostly quiet and cool, but sounds like a coffee grinder during heavy use (i'm sure they always sounded like that). i use them independently. i'm not going to use them in a raid, or for high use, or continuous use.
