Best Harmonica for the Blues and Other Music

The Blues Harp has a lovely rich sound that is produced by the wooden reeds. I much prefer this to the plastic reeds. I have been playing this type of harmonica and my harps from a full set of twelve keys for more than 20 years. I take good care of them and they perform perfectly. Notes bend clearly and without difficulty.I had to purchase three new ones because I lost them. The new harps fit right in with the older harps. I love these and would highly recommend them for a professional or a beginner.

I recently started playing Harp buying a 5 pack of these with the case.I also purchased a bunch of- Marine band (Natural Minor)- Lee Oscar (s) (Diatonic and Natural Minor)- one Souls' voice (looks and sound like a Lee Oscar)- one Seydel Blues Solist Pro. Best comfort, purest sound, poor bender.Did not try Hering 1923 Vintage Harp yet, but soon.Even though all non-Hohner have a purer sound and are more comfortable to play especialy the Seydel, the Hohners Blues Harp Ms and Marine Bands have a harsher sound, more squeeling, but still quite warm, which is more appropriate for rock and blues. It seems it is built to reflect more waves back into the comb which creates this specific sound coloration. Also the Blues Harp MS bends much efficiently then all ... MoreI recently started playing Harp buying a 5 pack of these with the case.I also purchased a bunch of- Marine band (Natural Minor)- Lee Oscar (s) (Diatonic and Natural Minor)- one Souls' voice (looks and sound like a Lee Oscar)- one Seydel Blues Solist Pro. Note my Manine Bands are Natural Minor, so I cannot evaluate bending on that one.The Hohner diatonics are a bit hard on the mouth at first, but we get use to this quickly. Also I enjoy the sound of wood combs much more then platic ones, even though I know the plastic combs will last longer. Plastic sounds too clean and does not add as much harmonics as these wood combs. Note that I don't play with the same harmonica for hours, so the comb doesn't swell as much as it does for busy blues players.Forget about changing the reeds. The MS series is easier to open and reassemble, but the reeds are hard to find and expensive.Anyway I mainly accompany myself with the harmonica while playing acoustic guitar, and when I'm big enough, I will play blues with it.I thought as a good bass player and a decent guitar player that harmonica would be the easiest thing in the world. Sheesh! I now stand corrected. But it's a lot of fun to learn such a vibrant instrument.I'm now completing my 12 keys collection of Hohner Blues Harp MS.

Great harp. Smooth sound.

Great sound on this harp. Smooth and deep. Certainly worth picking up one in each key. Planning on heading over today to order a low F rocket. Be sure of what you want, though, unlike other instruments no returns. Go to YouTube and listen to exactly what you want first. Price is about average.

Great, great harmonica. Easy to bend - play and drive!
12 January 2022

The blues harp is the standard. It's easy to bend low and high notes. Very durable. A VP professional instrument that can be purchased in a set of I think eight keys. These three blues harp (in C) harmonicas were purchased and sent to the Kentucky Tornado Relief -,collecting new and used musical instruments. It is on going through the end of this month (January 2022) and next.If my entry wins please send the check to the Kentucky tornado relief. Musicians instruments were literally blown away.

I LOVE This Harp
22 April 2016

I go the A blues harp about a week ago and I just can't put it down!! To start off with the blues harp has a great tone with it's wooden comb and brass reeds. The notes are very bendable right out of the box and the harp feels really good in the hand. The blues harp also has a really good weight in my opinion, meaning that it doesn't feel that you are holding a cheap harmonica. The tone is warm and inviting and I can see why this harmonica is perfect for the blues. Now there are some negatives to every harmonica and I would have to say that the harp is not the most airtight harmonica ever but I think that it just adds to the warm tone while still going ham on a solo at a gig. The blues harp also has an edge to it. The cover plates come a little past the comb and ... MoreI go the A blues harp about a week ago and I just can't put it down!! The blues harp also has an edge to it. The cover plates come a little past the comb and might feel uncomfortable for the first few jams but you will get used to it and it will not be a big problem. The blues harp is fantastic with chords and soul playing but is not the best for crisp single notes if you are looking for something like that I would buy a golden melody. Over all this harmonica is up their with my favourites and it can only get better from here. I hope that this review helped you.- Darren

Poor quality control on this harmonica.
26 August 2024

I ordered a Big River Harp, MS Series harmonica. The whole thing is out of tune, most notes are sharp up to 15 per cent, the last high note is flat.I noticed on the return slip , no returns on harmonicas.I'm really disappointed, not more buying harmonicas.

A great standard key (C), that's perfect to play many Blues numbers in. This harp (or Mississippi Saxophone) is in pretty good shape...the reeds work and aren't stuck, and the cover plates are snug enough so that there's minimal air leakage. All in all, a pretty good harp!

Sounds great and reliable

Needed this key for a few tunes we do, and ya cant go wrong with a blues Harp. The Blues Harp is a reliable great harmonica, I own several in different keys. I use them at all of our gigs. They last and I seldom blow out a reed with a Blues harp. I will continue to purchase them when they are available in the keys needed.

Overall:The German-made Hohner Blues Harp in A Major is a great addition to my hobby collection. The things I noticed was Hohner does a bit less stamping (key used to be stamped and is now painted on end, numbers are etched and no longer stamped, and the box is super-cheap. The hinge is just the plastic of the case, weakened to serve as a hinge, so expect it to fail. This unit shipped quickly, was packaged well, arrived in top shape and the tone for all notes is spot on. If you have the right tuner, you'll see that each comes in right at the frequency for the indicated note. Enjoyable to play. This one has a larger/redesigned outer shell that seems to allow a better dispersion of the sounds. Also noted that tones start immediately upon playing, whereas older M Band version needed a bit more force before reed vibrations began. This one ships with a credit for a month of free lessons, but you can find plenty on YouTube and others.

I have had at least one MS 532/20. I am glad I bought a Special 20 and a Lee Oscar at the same time as my first MS some 25 years ago. I have a complete set of both MS and 'Marine Band'. There are large similarities and differences. Hands down, the most striking between two - and adding the other 2 plastic combed harps - The fasteners are a major difference to me simply because saliva control is never perfect for anyone and harps need to be cleaned. I can't seem to keep a pocket clean enough to keep a harp n it for more than a few hours before getting dusty or something where it needs to be taken apart. MS 532 uses 'screw-posts' to fasten the cover plates and a stove-bolt with NO NUTS hold the reed plates. As for the Marine Band, another high quality beautiful sounding instrument. I save them for the stage because they are nailed together as they did in the old days. Opening and closing them up often is directly limited to the skill of the technician
