Hohner Blues Harp Harmonica Key Of G

$62.30

(18 reviews)

The Hohner Blues Harp Major Diatonic Harmonica offers a warm, mellow sound. Its lack of side vents and wooden comb add richness, making it perfect for playing the blues, while two coats of lacquer on the comb make it resistant to swelling or splitting. Ergonomic cover plates are based on the 1896 Marine Band model. As part of the MS series, you can also customise your instrument with interchangeable components from other Hohner MS Harmonicas. This model also comes with a handy case to keep it safe on the road!

I've had many HOHNER OF GERMANY products over the years: Blues Harp ... Special 20 and while I use them mainly to add a little sonic variety to my songs and bend a few notes ... they have always served me really well. The Hohner Crossover is very definitely in a class above the others I have for its brilliant sound, quick response and bendaility. While it is more expensive, I've realized that since these instruments last 'forever', it absolutely makes sense to get the best that you can afford. These are definitely worth every penny and if I buy any more, I will gladly pay the extra money for them.

I would absolutely recommend this (mid-range) harmonica to anyone that wants to pick up a quality instrument that will give you much better sound compared to the cheap models ($5-15). This model is used by many professional players. It has a good crisp sound and is responsive enough for beginners and advanced players. Hohner have been making quality harps for quite some time and their precision engineering shows. They are visually beautiful harps too!Leaving a bad review because of low skill level should not be attributed to the overall score of this instrument either. I actually wish Guitar Center would remove a couple of the reviews for this model. This is NOT a 2 1/2 star harp. This is a 4.5-5 star harp on most other sites. Every single harp that leaves the factory is tuned and ready to play. I have not received one that is not. Of course they can be tuned and "fixed" to your needs but be careful! I have compared the single notes and chords to a chromatic tuner set to 144Hz. They all come back right on the mark.I am by no means an expert level player but I know good sound and the tuning for this harp is a great introductory and advanced harp that is a "Just Intonation" temperament. Which means good sounding chords. Not as good for single note melodies but that certainly does not mean that you will not sound good at single notes. Needs more finesse and practice. A Golden Melody for example is great for melodies and not quite as smooth sounding for chords. Overall, this is a fantastic quality instrument for someone that knows they are serious about getting a good quality harp that will last them many years. You could easily find something for $10 and frankly it will sound like it. Spend the extra $30-40 and get yourself something of quality and precision.

I'm a guitar player and decided to get serious about playing the Harmonica. Between my girlfriend and I we had a few harmonicas stashed around the house. The Big River by Hohner hangs with the other harps! And it's made in Germany! Not sure if they still are? My collection includes a Fender Blues Deville, Hohner Marine Band, Lee Oskar, Hohner Special 20, and a few other cheaper models. Treat yourself to a decent harp. Why? It's easier to play, and it sounds much better. You definitely get what you pay for. I'll probably try a few other models, but if the Big River was all that I ever had, i would be happily learning tunes, entertaining folks, and having fun, which is what it's all about. Life it too short to struggle playing a not so good harmonica.

Great leap in quality
7 April 2020

Although not a novice, I am hardly an experienced player. I started with a Hohner Blues Band and found it pretty difficult to play. I thought it was (only) my lack of skill. I saw some online discussions of other instruments, so I bought a higher grade instrument, a Hohner 1896, and it was like someone had finally put the wheels on my skateboard. So, I bought a collection of harps in C, including some more expensive than the Crossover and some less expensive. Among 6 different models from Hohner, Seydel, and Suzuki, I find the playability of the Crossover to be the best. I would read another glowing review of one I already owned, and I would try it again for awhile. I kept going back to the Crossovers. So, I bought several other keys, and I love them all.I have taken them apart to clean them several times, and can see quality all the way through. I like the fasteners. I also like the Hohner repair kit. Although it's mostly things you can put together yourself, there is a little pick-like device in it that is perfect for safely clearing the residue that builds up.

The blues harp is the standard. It's easy to bend low and high notes. Very durable. A VP professional instrument that can be purchased in a set of I think eight keys. These three blues harp (in C) harmonicas were purchased and sent to the Kentucky Tornado Relief -,collecting new and used musical instruments. It is on going through the end of this month (January 2022) and next.If my entry wins please send the check to the Kentucky tornado relief. Musicians instruments were literally blown away.

One of the Best Blues Harps Out There

To be frank, I have only tried two different diatonic harmonica models: this and a Chinese-made harp from Mud Puddle. The former is clearly better than the latter, in my opinion. I have been playing these Special 20s since December 29, 2018 as a self-taught blues harper and these babies are tough as iron nails. What I meant by that is that for practice from 10 minutes to one hour each day, the harp is just a workhorse. The pitches for each hole on both reeds don't go flat and it still retains its responsiveness. As for the harp itself, in terms of what makes it famous, the response is astronomically good and it's very air-tight despite the rasp in its timbre. For its comb, it's actually fairly smooth even though you can cut your lip on it sometimes. Despite not being known for this next part, I just want to give this away. The Special 20 may have the best timbre for any diatonic harmonica. This may be controversial, but let me explain. Since the inception of the internet (as far as I'm concerned), this harmonica's timbre is described as being mellow and/or sweet. I never saw where they were coming from. From the Special 20s that I've played so far (C, Bb, and Ab), they all had a warm, powerful sound with a raspy tone. That raspiness is often overlooked, but it gives the harp a distinct and dark timbre that is just made to play the blues. Just a heads up that the bends will sound growly at one point or another. There is only one other gripe I have with this harp which isn't the comb. My Bb has a slightly angled top cover compared to the other two. Which had me make a "conclusion" that some of them look rushed. However, my Bb played extraordinarily well and is my favorite key for the Special 20.

I have had at least one MS 532/20. I am glad I bought a Special 20 and a Lee Oscar at the same time as my first MS some 25 years ago. I have a complete set of both MS and 'Marine Band'. There are large similarities and differences. Hands down, the most striking between two - and adding the other 2 plastic combed harps - The fasteners are a major difference to me simply because saliva control is never perfect for anyone and harps need to be cleaned. I can't seem to keep a pocket clean enough to keep a harp n it for more than a few hours before getting dusty or something where it needs to be taken apart. MS 532 uses 'screw-posts' to fasten the cover plates and a stove-bolt with NO NUTS hold the reed plates. Opening and closing them up often is directly limited to the skill of the technician

Don't expect to get a playable harmonica straight out of the box. I bought Blue Midnight harmonicas in the keys of G A C D and E. They all needed serious gapping adjustments. Only the E harmonica was gapped in an acceptable way, but it was obviously made in a different plant as many of its details did not match the others. My biggest disappointment with the Blue Midnight was seeing that the reed plates were held on by only two screw. By contrast my Special 20's have 5 screws and my Golden Melody harmonicas have 6 screws. I guess Hohner figured they would save half of a penny and make the cover screws on the Blue Midnight do double duty (hold the covers while also making up for the missing reed plate screws). I guess Hohner figured they would save half of a penny and make the cover screws on the Blue Midnight do double duty (hold the covers while also making up for the missing reed plate screws). It's very difficult to adjust the gaping while there's massive air leaks that occur when the cover screws are not in place holding down the ends of the reed plates. What a stupid design! I decided to add more screws but was met with my second disappointment. The comb is completely hollow so, other than an existing screw hole in front, there's not enough comb mass support addition screws. On the plus side, the reeds are slightly larger and the harmonica feels good against the lips. The sound is full, somewhat gritty, but also has a sweetness to it. In a strange way, maybe the cheap hollow comb and lack of screws contribute to its nice sound. If you have the ability and time to fuss around with its shortcomings, the Blue Midnight will ultimately be one you can enjoy. If you expect a harmonica playable out of the box, don't buy it. As a side note, my set of Golden Melody harmonicas have required extensive gapping adjustments and their protruding reed plates feel horrible against the lips. The Special 20's would be a better choice to buy.

My Uncle John always play the harmonica when we went to Little Canada a.k.a. Biddeford and Frenchville a.k.a. Westbrook Maine. My uncle use to wake us up during Christmas time playing the harmonica. The only down fall the harmonica is easy to lose. At his brother wedding he sent me to the music store to buy a Marine Band Key of C for 3.25 that was in 1966. I always wanted to learn how to play and it was in 1976 I got one, it was a Bb because they didn't have other keys. I started to teach myself. When there is lot of noise in the house, I start playing and it gets really quiet. If you are not sure about which harmonica to get, I say start with a Marine Band Harmonica,
