Amazing shoes for hiking

I got the Hoka Anacapa Breeze Low shoes for hiking and love them -- they are the best hiking shoes I've owned. They have a fantastic sole that is very grippy -- on gravel, rocks, damp grass and mud. On inclines, they do not slip at all, which gives me a lot of confidence with my ascents and descents. The shoes themselves are very comfortable and well-cushioned -- I can readily do 6-8 hour hikes in them without chafing or discomfort. They are quite breathable, but one should note that that they are NOT waterproof, so one needs to be careful not to step in puddles of water or they will get wet (there is a GTX version if one will be stepping in water). I'm a 61-year old speed hiker, who does a 5-K and 1,200 ft. ascent on a rugged SoCal single track about 5 days a week. I've had nearly all the HOKA trail runners and love nearly all of them. My current favorite (other than the colors) is Mafate Speed 4. These are my first pair of trail hikers and they're awesome. I can't decide which is better the MS4 or the Breeze....I'm thinking for me (190 lbs. or so) the Breeze may just win. Wow! They seem very durable, including tread. I'm my same 11.5 size as the trail runners. (As an aside, I tried the Anacapa 2 GTX and I had to size down to 11.) They're fast up and very good down (surprising)....and no ankle roll, good grip, no aches and pains or soreness in my right achilles or left knee tendon!!!! And I don't have to "shop for terrain"....I can put my foot anywhere and not get hurt. My trail is pretty rugged....lots of rocks (loose, buried, big, small, round, sharp), roots, etc. Lastly, some hikers have commented they don't like that the Vibram is not in the middle part, for greater durability. I disagree....I think this is key to these shoes being so fast and nimble and perfect, relative to a traditional hiking shoe. mikep. p.s. Before I purchased these, I saw a woman about my age on the trail wearing a pair of mid Ancapas and I asked her how she like them. She said, in a very English voice, "I am besotted by them." Me too!

Started my Hoka experience with Clifton 9s, which are about the most comfortable athletic shoe I've ever worn (and I have worn many over several decades). However, the Clifton soles wore through pretty quickly so I purchased the Anacapa hiking shoes for durability AND comfort. While not as cushy as the Cliftons, the Anacapas are quite comfortable and offer the vaunted Vibram soles for expected durability. Great combination so far. May take these to Africa in the autumn.

Excellent Sturdy Hiker.

I have been wearing Hokas for many years. I bought these for Nepal along with boots (Oboz) for higher elevations. I ended up wearing the anacapas at every possible opportunity. They offer better protection than say a Hoka Challenger. They are not as cloud like as most Hokas. They are slower than trail runners. Perfect for a rocky challenging trail where traction, stability, protection, and light weight are foremost. I most always use non waterproof shoes unless its just too cold. That way my feet dry between water crossings. This shoe also looks great in town and worked well tramping around city streets.

As a day hiker in southern Arizona these have met my needs and expectations so far. I do feel the construction is good with quality materials and I expect to have these for a while. People should know these are by design higher off the ground and may be problematic for someone prone to rolling ankles, the flip side of that is they are very well cushioned to protect your feet against more prominent rocky terrain while remaining responsive. The rocking motion of the shoe does feel propulsive when cruising at a consistent pace. I do feel that they took one hike to break in. I think my only small critic would be that I feel the toes are slightly under protected especially in my very rocky trail environment compared to my last day hiker shoe. I'm very pleased with this purchase so far and would recommend

My Go To Hiking Shoes
3 October 2023

I've owned six pair of Hoka shoes. This has become my primary shoes for hiking, unless the weather/ground is really wet (puddles, grass, etc. in which case I hike with the Kaha 2). These are as comfortable as any other pair I have owned, a perfect blend of cushion, and stability. I like the added seamless pad towards the heel, this makes the shoes easy to get on/off, similar to the Clifton, but also give just a little magic in the stability. In the photos this looks like it may stick out like a shoe horn, but rest assured, it does not.The Vibram sole adds an extra level of both grippiness, as well as durability. A gold standard for trail shoes of all types. You could run in these on trail, I've done it for short distances. But if that's what you're doing I'd ... MoreI've owned six pair of Hoka shoes. A gold standard for trail shoes of all types. You could run in these on trail, I've done it for short distances. But if that's what you're doing I'd recommend the Speedgoat. If looking for waterproof hikers try the Gore-Tex version of these, the Stinson Gore-Tex, or if you need even more durability, the Kaha 2 Gore-Tex. My go to for running in wet weather would again be the Speedgoat but Gore-Tex version. If I had one quibble, it would be that while Hoka likely did try to treat the upper with some form of water resistance as claimed, it's still not a shoe for wet weather at all. It may repel water a little bit more than regular shoes, and if you always hike in merino wool and don't mind your feet getting a little wet, or it's warm enough they'll dry anyway, then this may not mean anything to you. Again, this is a very minor thought, on an otherwise superb shoe.

Not as comfortable as previous Speedgoats I have purchased
30 July 2024

As an avid hiker, I have purchased multiple pairs of Speedgoats both regular and mid-goretex for the trail. I bought a pair of the Anacapa Breeze as everyday summer shoes, dog-walking, etc. I was very disappointed with the fit. I find that the banding that gives the shoe form is restrictive and provides unnecessary pressure points on the side of my feet which becomes uncomfortable after short periods of wearing. Will stick to the Speedgoats going forward. The shoe is made well and has Hoka durability, nfotunately it just does not fit the same as their other shoes fit me.

Not for tough terrain!
1 July 2024

I'll start by saying I love my 2 pairs of Hoka running shoes. I'll also say that these were comfortable. BUT, I wore these for about 7 days in New Hampshire's White Mountains and they didn't hold up. The Vibram soles were good, but the soft foam all around got shredded. I don't know if Vibram made the whole sole or just the dark blue hard part. This shoe would dim their reputation if they made the whole thing. The mesh sides also took a beating. These may be good for your local state park, but don't use them if you are planning to hike on serious rocks. I returned them when I got home. My Keens usually last 2+ years of hiking. These didn't make it 2 weeks.

Take Hiking out of the shoe title

I like the shoe and wore it for several weeks to break in before taking it to Spain to use on the Camino de Santiago Norte. I purchased the shoe after reading several reviews from various backpacking sources about the use of the shoe as a "trail shoe". I wore this shoe from San Sebastian to Zauratz (26km) and as a result I lost 8 toenails. The shoe was a good fit but the steep inclines and declines with large rocks were to much for the nearly zero protection the shoe provided for toes. I cant see how anyone would regard this shoe as a trail or hiking shoe for most of the hiking or mountain trails in the Appalachias, Rockies or Sierras and certainly not for the Camino. I left the shoes in Zauratz as I didnt see the point of carrying an extra pair of shoes I would ... MoreI like the shoe and wore it for several weeks to break in before taking it to Spain to use on the Camino de Santiago Norte. I work at the local prison in a health care facility for the last year. I work with nurses and other healthcare professionals daily, 99% of them have at least one pair of Hoka's. They all rave about the comfort and how beneficial they are for those of us who are on our feet for 8 to 12 hours at a time. The price point is a bit of a deterrent which is why I waited. What a regret these are epic shoes. Shopped extensively for a good 6 months using the shoe finder on numerous occasions. My criteria number one was a dark or neutral color, not a fan of the bright ones that are so common. Also because of the price point wanted at least a little leather on them, lol. I do appreciate the use of quality recycled materials. I have never been happier to spend $150+ and my feet ... MoreI work at the local prison in a health care facility for the last year.
