Stats - 45ish Male, 185(ish)lbs, running 5ks - marathons for over 20 years in the midwest heat and cold. I've given this shoe enough time to see if it would let me down - but it continues to impress! As a longtime Clifton wearer, it's been an on again, off again relationship. Fell in love with the Clifton 1, enjoyed the 3, 6, and 7, but was not looking forward to the 8 as much as I hoped. I use the Rincon 1 for treadmill and track repeats - and I like it well enough...but the Mach 4 seems to fill the hole left since Clifton 1 has disappeared. Pros - It's light, adequately cushioned for a heavier runner, and fits snug enough that everything stays in place. Tongue is nice and thin, which I personally like. Longest run in this shoe has been 10 miles, but no red flags yet. Bonus - Hoka started putting reflective material back on their shoes - which to me is a "no-brainer" for additional safety. Cons - upper material feels a little thick to the touch, but not so noticeable while running. Durability - I have just under 100 miles on the shoes and noticing some significant wear on the impact areas of soles. Could be prevented by adding some blown rubber to a few key areas. Also should note many of my runs are on gravel roads which will also contribute additional wear as this is a road shoe, most likely intended for pavement, but has worked great on gravel. Bottom line - if you're looking for a "do everything" shoe, and have enjoyed many of the versions of the Clifton and Rincon, you will most certainly love this shoe...I know I will be buying a second pair when the time comes. Kudos to Hoka for their success!

I CAME ACROSS THESE ODD LOOKING SHOES (hoka) I debated for about 2 weeks and finally purchased them, I honestly couldn't be HAPPIER, I absolutely love these. I wear them from 8am-8pm(work) then hit the gym (2hours) and my feet are comfy. I don't like run or walk even thou I have two large high energy dogs but with hoka my god I can go. The Mach 4 has a lot going on for it. Reasonably light and just the right amount of responsiveness so you can run fast but enough cushion that you can run easy and long as well. I have used the Mach 4 for tempo runs, recovery runs, and some moderate paced runs with some high intensity sprints. This shoe really feels like it can do just about everything! Although I am a huge fan of the way the mach 4 runs and feels underfoot, I do think it has a few drawback that Hoka missed. The upper is not very breathable, i consistently notice that upper fabric soaking wet after run in the heat. My favorite Hoka road shoe upper is the Carbon X, I think the Mach could shave a touch of weight with a single layer mesh but that would also take away from the soft feel and comfort it ... The reason I dropped the review to four stars instead of five is durability. I currently have just over 100 miles on them and the outsole is nearly gone! A small patch of rubber on the heel and just under the forefoot would easily get this shoe to over 400 miles but I dont think they would make it past three hundred with the current sole. Overall an awesome shoe just could use some minor tweaks to make it the best around!

First of all I gotta say I didn't want to like these because I first saw them on a person I do not like. I was at a shoe store, trying on everything but HOKA and didn't like the feel of any of the running shoes they had. I have plantar fasciitis and needed something really supportive for work/commuting. Once I tried these on I had to buy them. Compared to the Nike Free Runs and Adidas NMDs I have, it's like walking on a spongy cloud. When I run up the stairs of the train station, I feel like I'm bouncing off of trampoline shoes. I used to have some knee pain going up stairs and I don't feel it in these shoes. I even think my plantar fasciitis is better overall. I've been able to wear shoes with less support (for a short time) that I couldn't wear before, and I feel ... I even think my plantar fasciitis is better overall. I've been able to wear shoes with less support (for a short time) that I couldn't wear before, and I feel like my foot is getting stronger from moving in HOKAs without pain everyday. I'll definitely be getting more HOKAs in different colors.Only negative is that in the first week of wearing these I had some added knee pain. I read online that this happens because the cushiness of the sole allows your knee to buckle a bit before settling for each step. Once I became more conscious of that I focused on stabilizing my feet more with each step and it really hasn't been a problem since.
I was running my easy days in the Hoka Clifton's which are a great easy day shoe but I wanted something a little more responsive, not quite as soft and had some speed in it that I could use for easy days but could also do moderate pace, tempo and fartlek runs. I wanted an easy day shoe that was a little faster and more responsive than the Cliftons. I run my track and speed sessions in the saucony endorphin speed and race in the endorphin pro so the Mach 4 is my easy day shoe but I also use it for some tempo runs. I am a 1:18 half marathoner and my easy run pace is around 4:10-4:15 per km. I have put about 300km on my Mach 4's and so far am really happy with the shoe. The shoe is very comfortable, great quality and really light. As noted in many other reviews you ... The shoe is very comfortable, great quality and really light. As noted in many other reviews you will see some wear on the soles but so far its not concerning to me and I don't see a problem getting 1000km on this shoe. I run on both trail and road and the Mach 4 does great on both. The Mach 4 is super comfortable for my long easy runs but also really responsive and fast when I want to pick up the pace. It feels great at sub 4min km pace. I have run a few 7-10k tempo runs at 3:45-3:50 per km in this shoe and it does great. For tempo runs at half marathon pace or slower I prefer running in the Mach 4 to the Saucony endorphin speed especially if the terrain is a little uneven or variable as the Mach 4 is a little more stable than the endorphin speed. The Mach 4 is a fun shoe that wants to go fast and is more of a moderate/tempo pace shoe than an easy pace shoe but does both really well. I wanted a shoe that was comfortable for the easy miles but could also pick up the pace and go fast. The Mach 4 was exactly what I was looking for. If I could only have one shoe for easy, speed and race days I would pick the Mach 4.
Bottom line: if you only want to buy one pair of running shoes to do everything, these are the ones. This is my first pair of Hokas. I bought these as easy day shoes to accompany Saucony Endorphin Speeds and New Balance Fuel Cell RC Elite v2s for this training cycle. Initially I thought I would only use them for recovery days and easy paces. They were just not as propulsive as those other shoes. However, they are super lightweight and the uppers don't get too hot (and I've been training in 90+ Fahrenheit weather). They also look pretty great.I admit at first I didn't like the ride that much. Though they felt soft and bouncy, the soles were inflexible and gave me blisters on my first run. I realized that I needed to tie them looser on my midfoot and that took care ... Even then it took about 30 miles before they fully broke-in and I realized how much I loved these shoes.Turns out I had underrated the Mach 4s. These are not merely easy/recovery shoes. I have taken them out for tempo intervals and they are outstanding at sub-7-minute mile paces. In fact they felt natural at faster speeds (and were easier on my feet than my Endorphins). Nearly 50 miles in and they haven't lost any of their cushion or oomph but got more flexible and more comfortable. It's probably no coincidence that I've put double the miles on these shoes than any other: they fill any training need.I usually run on roads but my runs sometimes take me off-road on gravel or dirt trails. I've experienced some wear on the outsoles but it appears to be only cosmetic and the material seems to be holding up well. I anticipate these shoes will last at least 400 miles. All-in-all I'm a happy Hoka convert.
The Hoka One One Mach 4 is a lightweight, fairly well cushioned shoe which is not afraid of up-tempo work. Initial run with these was going to be a 4 mile piece though wound up at 6 at a quicker rate than I really wanted to go that morning though they just wanted to perform! Slightly slippery on damp pavement, overall the street-hold is good. As it is fall when this is written there are many sidewalks and back-streets with leaves and pine needles and with these it is akin to running on ice...yikes! The upper, once the laces are snug hugs your foot. I like this in the mid-foot area though the toebox could use slightly more room for the forefoot area. Length is spot on and the heel is wrapped well with no slippage. The laces...waaaaay too long! I already swapped them ... One thing for Hoka to consider is zero drop with wider toeboxes. You are so close; with a shoe like this I'd migrate more from a zero drop brand to these lightweight, cushiony kicks. Overall a great job by Hoka.
I can't remember a shoe that has come out recently that had as much hype before it was released as this one. I ordered these on the first day they were available and received them on a Friday. I couldn't wait to try them out so I ran a quick 4 miles on Saturday morning with the temperature around 40 degrees. Typically, when the temperature is in this range my feet getting hot is the least of my worries. After only 4 miles my feet were warm, which I found to be really odd. I took them out the next day for a 12 mile long run with the temperature around 50 degrees. I couldn't wait to get these off of my feet when I finished because my feet were so hot. The third run was intervals with the temp around 70 degrees. This time I wore the thinnest pair of socks I own. That ... I considered returning these because the upper does not breath at all, but in the end decided to keep them because there is enough upside to this shoe.Pros:Light WeightCushioning - These can soak up the miles and your legs will still feel fresh.Durability - I have 80 plus miles on these and they still look brand new. I feel that these should hold up for 300 to 400 miles.Versatility - These work for speed days, long runs, and really anything in between.Cons:The upper has little to no breathability. I live in the South and the temperatures will be really hot soon. If you live in an area where the temps get really hot in the summer, you might want to keep this in mind. This was the primary reason I gave these 4 Stars. If you need a wide toe box, this is not the shoe for you.
I really wanted to like this shoe more than I did. The tongue lockdown is great (recalls the EVO Speedgoat). The shoe is lightweight. The upper reminded me of the New Balance Beacon but with a better midsole underfoot. The midsole hits a sweet spot between the Clifton's soft cushion and the Rincon's firmness. And yet . . . I couldn't quite figure out where to fit the Mach 4 into my shoe rotation. Not quite enough stack for me to serve as a daily trainer (like the Clifton 7) or beefy enough to serve as a long-run shoe. Not quite light/snappy enough to do speed / track work, as the fit wasn't quite "race-y" enough for me.The Mach 4 is probably the roomiest / high volume Hoka I've ever tried -- perhaps closest to the Bondi in this regard. The materials of the upper feel great, and the heel counter is silky soft. I love the feel of the upper when holding it in my hand. But for a foot like mine that is already narrow and low in volume, there's just too much material around the midfoot and esp. the toebox. I had to cinch the laces so tight that the sides of the upper were almost touching each other, causing the toe box to puff up a bit. During fast runs, I felt my forefoot slipping around in the toe box, creating hot spots underfoot.I waited months for this shoe's release, but I just couldn't make it work for my foot type. I had to return it in the end.
I've run in my shoes once for three miles. I bought them to replace a pair of Nike Pegasus 38s, which I was dissatisfied with (the Pegasus wore out after less than 300 miles and has creases in the middle from day one). I bought these because I love my New Balance 1080s and the shoe guide I read said these are similar. The Hokas are extremely comfortable to walk in, but running was weird. It's an odd mix of fast and slow. A weird blend of my 1080s and a Rebel V2 (which I tried on). But the difference with these is your foot sinks into them, then the hard outsole catches on. It was an odd sensation, like running on sand. I thought surely they were super slow (it was an easy day), but I looked down at my watch and saw about a minute a mile faster than my usual easy ... I think I might eventually get used to them, but I had some shin splint pain and my quads seem to feel it a little more. I think it's the rocker on the shoe. I'll probably use this the way I used the Pegasus--easy days and medium distance fast but not all out days. Also, the Shoe is super narrow. It's almost as if the standard width is women's width. I don't have wide feet and I ordered up a size, and am glad I did. I could be wrong, but I think the outsole isn't a problem. It's very thick. I wore through the blown rubber on the outside of the Pegasus in less than 150 miles in some spots. I think the outsole, while technically EVA, is really just a huge chunk of rubberish material. I'll keep using them but am not convinced. Based on the initial run, I still prefer my New Balance 1080s.
