Hoya 55mm ND4 HMC Neutral Density Filter: Hoya 55mm ND4 HMC Neutral Density Filter is a lightweight and durable filter which is designed to use in condition of extreme light intensity such as sunshine on snowy mountains or on the beach or when using a camcorder, ND filters are recommended as essential. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching to the film and they have no affect on color balance. It is multi-coating to minimize reflection at surface which reduces flare and ghost. It enables slow shutter speeds with fast films to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, cars, seas etc. It decreases depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background. It also decreases the effect of high speed film and allows it to be used outdoors in blight situations. To allow cine and video cameras to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which are normally cause over-exposure. This filter is essential for those photographers who need clear, sharp and accurate image. The filter protect lens surface from dust, scratches, dirt and fingerprints and can be easily install and remove.

This is my first experience with ND filters, so I am not too knowledgeable about them. I used it to shoot video with a Canon D5-MarkII, from a sailboat on the water. It allowed me to shoot slow shutter speeds (1/30 - 1/125) in bright but cloudy conditions, and I had no concern about having to increase shutter speed or go to f32 just to limit light. Unlike another filter I purchased, this one had 1+ turns of thread on the lens so it was not at risk of falling off.

This fits under the tight clearance of a Leica Thambar lens hood. Knocks down just enough light to be able to shoot wide open in full sun.

It does fine if shooting without direct light in the background or hitting the lens. In bright direct lights there was very noticeable reflection inside the lens. I tested it compared with a B&W multi-coat in exact conditions. Though both have multi-coat, the B&W had zero relections. This Hoya multi-coat is 3x cheaper in price. It still works very well though (just out of direct light). You get what you pay for.
This Hoya filter is great quality and not expensive. The ring is fairly thin(not quite as thin as the slim filters but slimmer than most conventional ones)so less chance of vignetting on wide angles. And it has threads on the front so you can mount lens caps, hoods, and additional filters. I ran a few flare tests with and without the filter. Most of the images did not have any more flare with it on than without. Only the harshest test-LED flashlight 3 feet in front of lens aimed directly into it had more flare with the filter. And I checked the accuracy-its exacly 2 stops. Some less expensive ND's can be 1/3, 2/3, or even one stop off of what they're rated. But this Hoya is dead on.
It is an important addition to any camera accessories list. It basically slows down the amount of light reaching the sensor, which is very useful in sunny weather or when one wants to slow down movement such as in waterfalls. This filter will alow a photographer to use the camera creatively when there is too much light.
Good day! I would like to talk about buying a different color filter company Hoya NDX4 67mm. This filter acquires in ASIC for a night scenery of the city. The complexity of photographing at night long exposure is parasitic light resulting in overexposure photo long exposure. This filter is great help to solve the key problems. Also need to photograph on a sunny day and good at fotografiryvaniem fast moving waters. This filter is very practical. Filter quality is excellent. With the job well at 100%. Would recommend.
It's a nice solid metal ring, threads on both sides mean my screw cap still works. Transmission is roughly accurate, it generates a ev drop of 1.7 rather than 2 but it's close enough for me. I don't notice any discrepancies over the range of the image, seems to filter evenly.
Appears to be a very good quality manufacture ... but it didn't do what I had hoped it would do. It did seem to provide some additional contrast ... especially with clouds and making the sky a deeper, darker, blue. But to achieve the effect of what I see with my polarized glasses I think I would need to go with a polarized lense in its place.
Used for video recording in bright daylight so can have a slower shutter speed for video production work. Also can be used for still photography to make water movements silky smooth. You'll probably need a whole set of these in different stops to suit every situation, but 4x is middle of the road.
