Absolutely loved the laptop. I was kinda apprehensive about the build quality and the hinge because I had heard that it was a bit fragile. I went ahead and bought it anyways and I am happy that I did so. I am a college student (information systems major) and I am using this one for school along with some video editing for my youtube channel (Breaking Burgers) Let me break down the positives and negatives (though I have had it only for a week): POSITIVES 1. A wonderful typing experience that you can get used to, in a very short span of time. 2. It is well-built and the screen doesn't have a lot of wobble, thanks to a good-quality hinge. 3. Golden performance with the Ryzen 5 5000 series, I am able to edit videos for my YouTube channel as well. 7. Great battery life. Getting about 7-8 hours easily on youtube and notion multitasking!!! NEGATIVES The only negative is that the screen does have a bit of glare from certain viewing angles but is not a deal breaker at all.

Capable laptop for modern (2022) use

The omission of a numeric keypad is something some may miss but generally the keys are good for typing in my experience so far. Screen brightness is excellent and the integrated sound is excellent by laptop PC standards. There is no fingerprint reader but the Windows Hello facial recognition camera has been similarly effective. Occasionally the PC will tell me to move my face a bit further away if I'm leaning in, otherwise it responds quickly and thus far without error. In my use case I don't have the chance to fully test the battery life to its fullest but this model seems like battery life won't be a particular problem by the standards of laptop battery life. Port assortment is good, either of two type C thunderbolt ports may be occupied by the charging cable at any time but that would leave the other and another two type A USB 3.1 ports.

Decent laptop with some minor fallacies

Context: I got this laptop to replace my old one as it was struggling to keep up with my activities and this laptop was on a crazy good sale for $699. I was a little hesitant in purchasing it as I've had friends whose hinges have broken on this model but ultimately decided it was worth a shot. When it arrived, there was a gaping hole in the back of the box/package, though that likely was shipping's mistake rather than best buys. Thankfully, I could not find any signs of damage, but it's possible my experience was minorly influenced by that. The laptop itself is pretty nice, especially for the price I got it at, but there were enough small problems with it that I ended up returning it. Pros: I like the color and sleekness of the design. The laptop itself is pretty nice, especially for the price I got it at, but there were enough small problems with it that I ended up returning it. Pros: I like the color and sleekness of the design. It's got a light sheen to it without getting too reflect-y. I haven't noticed any glare on the screen and the color/saturation is pretty good as well. I've been happy with its brightness levels, as it can go several levels higher than on my old laptop. I love that the screen really maximizes its space. This is a 15.6 in but only slightly larger than my old 14 in. It's not crazy light, but for the size and specs, it's not too heavy. The laptop stands on its own pretty well when in an upside-down position and doesn't try to close further while tapping the screen. I haven't had any issues with the touchscreen as it responds well and doesn't lag. The screen's texture had a tiny bit of drag but I'd say is pretty good overall. Even though it needs the fan more than I'd like, I never had the computer heat up a ton which is very nice. Cons: After thoroughly examining it and not seeing any signs of damage, I messed around with the hinges a bit. They seemed sturdy enough but did have a little bounce when I open the laptop. It seemed to work fine in tablet and upside-down mode, and the light bounce didn't really bother me but if you use the touchscreen while in regular laptop position, I could see it getting very annoying very quickly. I was not particularly impressed with the design in general. The image makes it look like the speakers are on the sides of the keyboard area, but the sound definitely comes from the bottom. In general, the quality was not great and super muffled due to its location. I also noticed right off the bat that the touchpad and keys were pretty loud. This is something I hadn't thought much about before, but this laptop's definitely louder than my old one. The touchpad has just a tiny bit less glide than I'd like, but the light "thud" sound it made every time I tapped was definitely the bigger problem for me. My touchpad making sound is an indicator that I physically pushed the click area down rather than just tapping, so the constant tap sound here bothers me a lot. The keys are also a bit annoying. I appreciate having some sound when I press a key down, but I found myself getting distracted by the sounds from this keyboard. Finally, and my biggest reason for returning, is that the capacity just wasn't enough for me. I was coming from a Ryzen 5 3000 series with 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, and no touchscreen/2-in-1. Considering the serious upgrade in each of those areas, I was expecting a much larger difference than I got. If I had over 20ish tabs open, the fan would start going and it didn't take much more to start pushing my specs to their limits. In my task manager, my memory never dropped below 65% and it, my disc, and occasionally my CPU would often reach the 90-100% area. Considering that's with mostly regular sites and I do digital art/light gaming, I was very unimpressed that it was already struggling before I'd even opened those. I'll definitely be going for a 16gb instead to feel secure for my art/gaming, but I would also recommend that for any fellow tab hoarders out there, this computer isn't really built for more than 15-20 tabs without starting to struggle a fair bit. Overall: 4 stars since its problems are more annoyances than large fallacies. If you aren't a gamer/digital artist/editor/tab hoarder/etc, I would guess this computer would do well for you. The keypad and touchpad might take some getting used to, but those could probably be adjusted to fairly quickly. The audio is definitely a drawback, but if you aren't using it for music or things, it still is pretty understandable. Overall, definitely not the laptop for me, but I could see it being a great laptop for someone else.

Great laptop but with questional build
13 August 2022

Overall, spec wise, this laptop is hard to beat for the price when on sale. All aluminum case feels super well built and is packed with features. Backlit keyboard is nice and feels amazing The screen is super colorful and bright (400 nits) Great cpu Fast charging and decent port selection. Where I question the build is....I got one and the screen did not sit 100% flush along the body. When the lid is open, you can see on the right side there is a gap in the corner between the screen lid and body and in the left side, it sits lower. This by a few mm but still noticeable The trackpad also, for this price, should be a glass trackpad but it's not. The click is nice and is super precise but, at 1100$ when not on sale, should be glass. Onboard ram, why......no upgradability but should be good for a few years. Just don't buy this with the intent of future proofing your purchase. 8 GB should be fine for most but not if you're into intense video editing for example. Overall, on sale, very good buy even with those questional build issues. They are minor and don't take away from the overall experience. Maybe just get an extended warranty

Great value, wimpy screen
18 January 2023

Great value when this is on sale or open box. Better yet wait for a sale, and THEN get it open box! Full price? No way, look elsewhere. I'll be writing this review from the point of view of a power user / prosumer. First things first, the IPS screen is pretty washed out coming in around 40% sRGB coverage and fairly low brightness. If you are doing photo or video work, the base model screen will not do. It has a fairly heavy green cast to it which I was able to remove, but it's still fair at best. Out of the box as is I'd say it's barely average. Most users won't care to be honest that are just doing basic desktop work while indoors. For my use case I don't really care, but it's noticeable. I have to run my brightness about 3/4 of the way up, so not a great laptop ... MoreGreat value when this is on sale or open box. Better yet wait for a sale, and THEN get it open box! Full price? Most users won't care to be honest that are just doing basic desktop work while indoors. For my use case I don't really care, but it's noticeable. I have to run my brightness about 3/4 of the way up, so not a great laptop for going outside with most likely. The reflective screen gives a nice sharp text, but at the cost of reflections. The Ryzen 5 5625U is the star of the show being a Zen3 6 core part. It's very easy to find lots of older 5000 series parts that are really warmed over Zen2 4000 series stuff. The 5500U is a great example. Very confusing unless you look up each CPU or understand the naming systems. This machine punches somewhere between a 1700X and 2700X desktop parts depending while consuming about 33 watts in performance mode. The cooling is pretty good if you enable "fan always on" in the BIOS, it's disabled by default. No need to disable 'Turbo Boost' no matter what the internet tells you on this model. Fan noise is acceptable even when you are doing a heavy workload. It's not silent, but I've heard much worse. Don't expect to do any gaming on this unless it's older / very light or e-sports and some indy titles. The Vega 7 iGPU is enough to accelerate your desktop and browser without complaint though. Memory is a two-slot affair with 2 x 4GB SO-DIMMs at 3200Mhz CL22 and very cheap to upgrade to 16GB. I paid about $40 bucks for a kit. Don't bother with gamer kits, this thing will just run JEDEC timings anyways. Easy to open, no screws under the rubber feet on these refreshed models unlike the Envy models before this. There is no option I saw to keep the battery charge around 80% for those who stay plugged in a lot. I think that is only on Probook level machines. Silly omission. Build quality is good, easy to open, stays pretty cool to the touch under all but the most demanding workloads. Camera has a physical mechanical shutter, which is just kinda cool. Great machine, if you can get it at the right price point. P.S. for users who want to dual boot Win11 and Linux - They make installing Linux a little odd, with the BIOS having a sub menu for the boot order that isn't intuitive. Getting grub to be the primary bootloader took some trial and error, detailed below. Enter the BIOS with F10 and head to the boot order menu. Move the regular boot order with F5 and F6, but you have to press enter on the bootloader option itself, which will bring up another menu allowing you to select between Windows Boot Manager, and grub. Swap the order with F5/F6, and press F10 to accept while in the submenu. If you just hit escape, it will revert to what it had before. You're welcome, no idea why it doesn't give each one its own overall option in the main order.

Looks Appealing, but Many Problems
15 February 2023

I thought this computer would be a good fit for me. It would, if it worked well – but IT DOES NOT work well – it constantly freezes up just trying to open a folder. I LIKE: • The backlit keyboard is easy to see and very comfortable for me to type on. • The processor seems fast enough - when it's not totally stuck. • It has nice speakers (although they face DOWN onto your lap - a POOR design & a waste of good speakers.) • It looks good! I DON'T LIKE: • The speakers face downward, under the body. Very muffled if you have it on your lap or a soft surface. There are FAKE speaker grills on the keyboard side, that make you think there are top-facing speakers, but this is a FAKE-out. It would, if it worked well – but IT DOES NOT work well – it constantly freezes up just trying to open a folder. I try to open folders in Documents and Windows explore just freezes - I can’t search, or scroll, or open a document -this goes on for 2-3 minutes! This is a BRAND NEW COMPUTER! This is completely unacceptable, to wait 2-3 minutes to open a folder! • This laptop has a large touchpad that seems to be programmed in a very specific manner that is not documented anywhere! This makes it very difficult to do basic functions, like clicking and dragging to select text in a document. You have to click down in very specific areas of the touchpad to make this work. And if you touch the wrong area, you can easily open or close or reformat your document without meaning to. (Some of this might be able to be altered in advanced settings, but I have been typing using touchpads for many years, and have never had such trouble with basic functions.) So I can’t really recommend this computer – it looks like a good package for the price, but does not perform smoothly day to day.

Perfect for most uses

I work as a Tier 2 tech on computers so it takes me forever to pick anything up as I over research it. My wife needed a computer to run the cricut software and a touchscreen was going to help. I researched all of the different brands and options for a 2-in-1 laptop for the price I was willing to spend. Pros: AMD Ryzen 5 5625U is a reliable and fast processor. It's perfect midranged for any PC. Wi-Fi 6E (2x2) and Bluetooth combo is the new normal and it's quick and has less issues then prior version 360° geared hinge: is really strong and I don't worry about it breaking with constant use Cons: 8 gb memory - most companies are trying to save money by only offering 8gb and while I do suggest 16 for the price 8 is good. I want to add that unlike other competitors this laptop does not have the memory attached to the board with sauder. It also has a 2nd memory slot so it's easy to upgrade (If you know what your doing). I did put it as a negative because they added 2x4gb chips so you have to get a full replacement or just upgrade to 12gb when you do. Neutral: 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD is not the best drive due to the size. Most people won't have an issue with it and it can be upgraded. It is a fast little drive but 512 is really the min I would suggest. Check out the Samsung 980 or 980 EVO drives they are an amazing upgrade with quick boot. Graphics: AMD Radeon Graphics - This is a good built in graphics and for the price it's all you really can get. It's not gamer level but it is consumer level. Just know what you are buying and don't expect to run your games at 4k. Overall: I would really suggest this laptop for most consumers. It is not a gaming laptop but it's not meant to be one. If you are looking for school, work, or pretty much anything expect for gaming or programming this will suit your needs. The biggest plus is unlike the Dell and Lenovo 2-in-1 you can upgrade because of how it was built. Solid laptop I would suggest.

Serves its purpose but doesn't get me excited.

I have mixed feelings about this PC. I actually wish I could return it for the smaller version I originally wanted, but I am out of the country and I assume it would pose a big hassle. Pros: Size of the screen is good for excel and using apps side by side and it works acceptably well with the hp pen (sold separately). For a student it's useful in this regard. The body looks and feels nice and it seems sturdy enough to survive being carried around daily. HDMI, USB and USB-C ports are a big plus and gives you variety. Touch screen and 360 movement gives you multiple viewing and use options. Cons: It's a 15.6" PC but somehow it's longer than it's peers, meaning it doesn't fit in any and every laptop sleeve. HP has special products that fit it though. The extra space ... MoreI have mixed feelings about this PC. HP has special products that fit it though. The extra space used for the speakers on the side is not very useful since the audio is average and the keyboard placement of the home, end and delete keys is a pain and takes some getting used to. Too many times my curser jumps around the page when typing because of this (it really drives me crazy). There is a large speaker below the laptop that doesn't make much sense as even on solid surfaces the sound gets muffled. If this was rectified, the audio would pair well with the large screen for movie viewing. The RAM is not stellar and I've had the laptop freeze on me a few times already so be mindful if you like to run multiple apps at once and don't shut down daily. It runs hot pretty fast when in use and because of the large and Long size, plus the almost non-existent screen boarder makes using it in tablet mode very clunky and annoying. the touch screen reacts to any skin, so an accidental touch messes many things up. Overall, I wish I could be happy about this purchase but unfortunately I'm not. This doesn't mean it's a bad device, just not the right one for me.

Visibly Underwhelming
15 July 2022

PROS: Gorgeous (if a bit glossy) screen; lightweight; one of the fastest processors available -- for now; CONS: No RJ-45 input; Windows 11 software still unstable; surprisingly poor graphics. I had high hopes for this model. I ordered it July 4, 2022 -- and Best Buy delivered it the next day. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. It's clear that HP and W11 still don't play nice together -- this computer, like other HPs I've tried, has various issues with W11 instability. But unlike the others, I was able to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 (version 21H2) on this model with ease -- and that all but eliminated most software issues. But, to my eyes, the much bigger problem is the graphics component. But, to my eyes, the much bigger problem is the graphics component. I don't buy computers willy nilly -- I do a lot of research beforehand. In researching this laptop, I found two credible websites that indicated the AMD Ryzen 5 5625u processor is supposed to come with a powerful iGPU -- Radeon RX Vega 7 graphics, with up to 2 GB of VRAM. Nope. This model comes with only a standard graphics card -- and just 512 mb of VRAM. My eyes clearly see the difference between such a card -- and my other computer with 2 GB of VRAM. There's no legitimate reason why a computer normally retailing for $800 has such a comparatively poor graphics package. If you're less picky about graphics performance, this may well be a fine laptop for you. But if you are more selective about such things -- then you may want to wait for the forthcoming Ryzen 6000 series models.

Well Balanced 2-in-1 Laptop for a Reasonable Price
16 February 2023

So, I was looking for a new laptop when my old HP Pavilion finally died after seven years of service. I do embedded programming for work but have been picking up drawing in my off time, so I started looking at 2-in-1s for the first time. Most 2-in-1s I was seeing were either extremely expensive or had a poor combination of specs. Windows doesn't run well on 8 GB of ram/memory these days, and a 256 GB SSD fills up pretty fast. The HP Envy is substantially better than that, with a high end processor, reasonably sized SSD, and gets beyond the dreaded 8 (or 4) GB of RAM. Throw on a good screen and a sturdy chassis and you've got a winner. I ended up springing for this one on sale for $550, about half its price at introduction. Throw on a good screen and a sturdy chassis and you've got a winner. I ended up springing for this one on sale for $550, about half its price at introduction. The AMD 5700U model seems to have competed pretty closely with the (much more expensive) flagship HP Spectre x360 when it was introduced ~mid 2021. It is an HP certified refurbished laptop, so it runs well, with just a few cosmetic issues. I saw a small scratch right below the touchpad and a little bit of screen backlight unevenness in two places on the edge (which is apparently fairly common for IPS screens). Those are the only issues I saw, neither of which I've noticed while actually using it. It has been a really nice laptop. Build quality is solid, the screen is nice and clear. The hinges feel pretty sturdy and I don't worry about breaking them flipping modes. The 1920x1080 resolution, 16 by 9 display ratio ends up being a bit narrow when you flip into portrait mode, but it's only been in the past year the fashion's been going towards wider 16 by 10 screens. It's plenty bright and I typically end up turning the brightness down a bit. The keyboard layout is a little bit wonky, but nothing you won't get used to after a few days of using it. The right ctrl key has been replaced by a fingerprint reader. 12 GB of RAM isn't huge, but it looks to be upgradable if you're adventurous. It doesn't come with a pack-in pen. It took a bit of digging to find that it's compatible with MPP 2.0 aka N-Trig pens, the same type used by modern Surface laptops. I ended up getting a Renaisser Raphael 520C and it worked immediately. It doesn't seem as precise as my Wacom Intuos digitizer, but it's decent enough for most purposes. There is maybe a tenth of a second delay between pen press and the line showing up, and the pressure isn't as clean. I've been keeping my Intuos in the laptop bag for when I need it, but I can't complain for a non-optimized device that works well for note-taking and basic sketching. I'm quite happy with the performance. I've done a couple compilations on it and it's similar to what I get on my work laptop. Boot is snappy, I'm not waiting around for things to load, and I haven't seen any slowdowns on the web or local programs yet. There's a chunk of bloatware pre-installed, but that's unfortunately par for the course. Battery life is excellent and it runs very cool and quiet. A note for Linux users (if you don't know what that is, this doesn't matter for you): AMD has not been adding support for their 4000 and 5000 series laptop parts to their sensor fusion driver in the Linux kernel. This means that the touch screen will work fine but the fold and tilt sensors don't. This matters only if you are using a Linux operating system. If you're using Windows 10 or 11, this doesn't affect you. Overall, I am very happy with this laptop and I would recommend it for anyone who wants a device that just works, for half the price of comparable products.
