I bought this saw as a replacement for a Husqvarna I had for over 25 years. That saw was a beast and and I cut many a tree with it. It was extremely durable and just kept on running. After 25 years it started giving me more trouble than it was worth so I bought this Rancher. I can't speak to the durability of this one yet as I've only had it for a few month and have only cut one large Cherry tree and some misc. debris across a 4 wheeler trail but it doesn't seem to have the power that my old Husqvarna did? It cuts well but it seems like it struggles a bit more than my old one. Also, after that one tree (it was a big one) and those few smaller downed trees, the chain was so dull it almost wouldn't cut anymore. I'm happy enough with the saw and time will tell on how ... I'm very disappointed in this. Having retired my old Stihl, I thought the Husqvarna would be on the same level. I gave it 2 stars because, when it worked, it worked pretty well. Unfortunately on the first chain swap, the cheap clutch housing holding the chain stop spring split and the spring popped out, nearly taking my finger off. I contacted customer service, but they ghosted me. I bought a new knee joint on eReplacementParts, put it back together, and am now waiting for it to explode in my hands again. I'll use it until it becomes too dangerous or I have enough money for a good saw.

Brought it back out to the farm and used it for a weeks for the same type of work. It just stopped again. Brought it back to the same authorized service provider. Turns out it was the same problem as the first issue that was considered a manufacturing error. This time, Husqvarna refused the warranty repair - while the saw is still under warranty, because this repair is too soon after the first repair for the same problem.When you're out in the field, you need a reliable chainsaw. Husqvarna is not it.

Once one is surviving on disability, it's impossible to afford most services of companies to do things for you anymore, so it now becomes things one has to do on their own. One tree in particular, a black walnut, was old and dead and hard as rock.I got the 455 Rancher because of the price and because it seemed to have good specs. I've used it for almost two years and it runs good and gets the job done. Once in a while it may give a fart in summer time and give trouble starting, but not often. It's not powerful, but I got the black walnut cut up in 18" pieces (limbs that I didn't have to split) pretty easily. The trunk, having a 3' diameter, was another creature. The 20" bar made it a little hard to do, but the motor at least had just enough power to get as much as I could out of that trunk. I think I had to stop at about 2' diameter which left about 35' of trunk (I wish I'd had the money to have it taken to the sawmill and cut into long slabs so I could have made a really nice desk out of it...I mean think of it, black walnut, a *beautiful* wood for furniture!).It's a tough little chainsaw. It even got run over by my '90 Chevy half ton truck and all it got were some rubber marks on the case and ran like nothing had happened to it.It's still not a *powerful* saw, so keep that in mind. It can do large trees *IF* one knows what they're doing, but will take a while longer to do them. A sharp chain is an *extreme* must with this saw so that the engine doesn't have to work so hard.I'd recommend this chainsaw mainly for smaller stuff than I used it for. I always wished I'd gotten something *meant* for the things I was using/needing a chainsaw for. This saw was great at doing anything with trees that were 1' diameter or smaller. It's easy to use, easy to start, easy to clean. It does have a little trouble after a while with the bar oil feeder...it starts to give a lot more than is needed and adjusting it doesn't seem to help. I never could figure out how to fix it, but it didn't use it up so fast I needed to keep gallons and gallons around, just starts using a little more than is really necessary, that's all.It's a little heavy, for just a saw for mostly homeowners with small tree and shrub work to do, but since it takes a beating and keeps running, this is the ticket for those folks.Overall, if you don't plan to cut timber larger than 1' in diameter, this is the saw to get, especially because the price is nice and deals can be found all over easily.
I have owned two of the 455 rancher saws and have had good performance from them. Design of the power head is quite good for this size saw. Primer bulb and compression relief along with the choke design work well and make it reliable to start and idles well as long as you use the recommended 2 cycle oil (do not use inexpensive 2 cycle oil) and fresh non-ethanol gasoline. I also recommend using a higher quality bar oil rather than the cheapest ones out there as I had clumping and contamination in them and had to throw them out.I did learn the hard way to not have the chain brake on while letting it idle. It overheated the clutch and warped the bar oil tank and it leaked from then on and ruined the clutch. Some other brands can idle with the brake on but not this ... I would not use a longer bar on this saw and i believe it is not recommended.Cheap bar oils do not oil the bar and tip properly and I nearly burned up a bar before i caught it on the first saw. I do wish that it came equipped with what is known in the logging industry as a twin ring speed clutch instead of the star gear chain drive and a cloth type cleanable air filter as I operate in conditions which are hard on saws and other professionals have made these modifications to their saws.I Bought a second one as the first one performed well and i am happy to report it is working as well as the first one. I have owned other brands of high end professional saws and worked with others in the logging industry and after several years of use I can recommend this saw.
My 455 Rancher is currently with a dealer awaiting warranty service approval. Generally, I praise Husqvarna in quality, so I likely bought a rare defective item from Lowe's. It's to be noted, that Lowe's and there employees proved thoroughly useless in assistance.This 455 Rancher behaved oddly from the start with the brake handle being a bit vibratory. With perhaps no more than 20 hours actual run time on the chainsaw, while cutting a log, it seized and the cover plate along with the entire brake clutch assembly shot off and out into the woods. Always wear PPE, less I might have lost an eye and some finger to shrapnel. The coil spring for the braking mechanism looked like a stretch slinky. With the exception of normal maintenance, I have NEVER done any work on this saw. Normal maintenance was cleaning the air filter, replacing one spark plug, and replacing two bars and about a dozen chains. I let a buddy of mine borrow it for a couple of weeks to clear some brush at his dad's property. He was up in the air on what kind of saw to buy himself, after using mine for a couple weeks he went out and purchased one of his own.In my opinion the power to weight ratio of this series of saw is a perfect balance. Not so heavy that it wears you out in a long day of cutting, yet powerful enough to go through the largest of limbs. Even hedge, which is mostly what we use to heat around here.On a side note, my father purchased a Husqvarna 55 when I was about 2. It was his primary saw for years. When I was in high school he purchased another Husqvarna and I ran the 55 before I bought my 455. That saw is still running strong today. I am planning to inherit it someday.I may be a little biased, but I will never own another brand of saw. I have run saws by other manufacturers and they never measure up. I have run some other husqvarnas, and I like them, however my old 455 is my favorite.
I bought my 455 Rancher in 2011 and it is still going strong. I have had to replace the carburetor because of bad fuel, but it is still a cutting machine. I live in an area hit by Hurricane Idalia and have been cutting up an extreme number of downed trees. Keep the Husqvarna sharpener handy and sharpen the chain at the end of each day. I use only pre-mixed fuel 50:1 and this keeps the saw running in top shape.

It has been twenty years since we purchased our last saw, so this gave us time and experience to select the perfect saw for our next work projects.The Husqvarna Rancher 455 is the perfect work horse for a while range of jobs from small limbing to mature tree felling.
