After 40+ nights and one year into owning this tent I'm ready to review. I've hardcore lived out of this Mid for weeks at time so I can now confidently speak on it.The good: 1) The simplicity, ease of setup, and versatility are next-level. 2) I trust this Mid in any environment- from humid Deep South summers to frosty high desert winters this shelter has stunned & performed in the wind, rain and snow. I pair it with the net with no floor when bug pressure is heavy and flying insects like mosquitos are kept OUT although ground crawlers may still crawl. 3) Weight and packability make this thing a delight to haul anywhere. 4) Sex appeal. What else can I say? This Mid turns heads, starts convos, and looks damn good pitched just about anywhere. The not so good: 1) ... MoreAfter 40+ nights and one year into owning this tent I'm ready to review. What else can I say? This Mid turns heads, starts convos, and looks damn good pitched just about anywhere. The not so good: 1) Holes! I'm troubled by several small holes that have appeared around the base- troubled because there was never a precise moment where I noticed these occur and I don't know of anything that I did to cause them. I expect my gear to perform and can be harsh at times, however I always remain mindful and pay attention to abuse and potential damage, so the sudden appearance of said holes has lowered my trust in durability and expectations on build quality. HMG markets the Mid as a badass backcountry shelter so random holes are NOT cool. 2) I am 5'11" tall, 170lbs w/ athletic build and when I lay flat in the tent my head and feet graze the front and back tent walls- meaning my head and feet rub on condensation, getting sleeping bag/clothing wet. If you're my height or taller (or just a widebody) then def take into consideration that you MIGHT NOT fit inside this thing very comfortably. I really wish it had a few extra inches added to all of the dimensions. 3) The DCF material is not very breathable, dries slow inside and can heat like a car under a hot day's direct sun- I always pitch with airflow in mind. !) Know what you're getting- pyramid design tents like the Mid do not have a vestibule. Can't give 5 stars due to the holes, but overall I am pleased with my investment in this shelter and look forward to many more backcountry nights spent under the Mid. Bonus: Running a floorless shelter in insect-laden environments has liberated me from the need to be completely sealed off from every living creature. Free yourself, go floorless. It's the way humans USED to live.

As a 2p i think it leaves something to be desired space wise. Build quality is very good, material is excellent, and the service was outstanding.

Expensive yes, but worth every penny.

Finally a tent I don't hate!
13 May 2021

Light, strong, easy to set up, versatile, and doesn't fill up my pack -- what's not to love? I've always had a love/hate relationship with tents, and I've gone through quite a few of 3 and 4 season options. Obviously tents are great because they keep you warm and dry in the mountains, but I've always hated how much space they take up in my pack and how much weight they add to my back. Bivy sacks kinda suck during a storm, and single wall models struggle with the moisture management issue.Enter the UltaMid2. Even with the full insert (which I bought), it's weight-competitive with single wall tents. Both layers compress into a stuff sack smaller than the included sack for either layer, and it's laughably light. I've only had it out in the mountains for a couple nights now, but the fabric seems tough and likely to last for a long time. The translucent material lets natural light in, and the full insert provides plenty of room for two tall adults (6' and 5'10"). The only glaring omission is the lack of a vestibule, but I'll gladly put up with that inconvenience for the sake of a tent I don't want to cover in gasoline and start on fire.

I purchase mine a year ago (with insert) and waited to get some hikes on it in the North Cascades before writing a review. First the good news, most of these 5 star reviews are spot on. Sewing and taping work is great, design is excellent, materials are top notch, and true to their claim, my 70 pound Weimaraner has enough room to sleep between my wife and I, no problem. So why the 3 start rating you say? Simple. When a 2 person tent passes the $1,100.00 dollar mark, absolutely every feature should function without fail. Sadly this just isn't the case for my UltaMid 2. All the small tensioners at the corners of the tent simply do not hold tension on the supplied 2.8mm UHMWPE guy lines. Not the end of the world, but a bit of an inconvenience when now you are forced to ... MoreI purchase mine a year ago (with insert) and waited to get some hikes on it in the North Cascades before writing a review. Not the end of the world, but a bit of an inconvenience when now you are forced to run the guy line out until the knot jams into the tensioner and if you can't set your stake because the soil is rocky at that distance, now your anchoring to a rock, or burring a stick with stones. If it were a less expensive tent I would give it 4 stars because the tensioners don't function, but for a tent that passes the grand mark, absolutely every feature, and mine you this tent has few of them to save weight, should function without exception. 3 stars for non-functioning corner tensioners. Could be a fluke, but not a one on my tent works as it should.

Outstanding design and elegant simplicity

Just finished a 7 day hike of the Overland Track in Tasmania using the 3400 and 2400 Southwest packs (see separate review) and the Ultimid 2 tent and full floored insert.I love this tent! firstly, it is super light slightly over a kilo (2.2 lbs) for the tent and full insert which is a full half kilo lighter than my previous Wilderness Equipment Arrow 2, a well made 4 season 2 person tent from a reknown Australian outdoors manufacturer. Secondly, it is a lot of room inside. You can sit up easily and change or move around without disturbing you partner. You can store you packs and gear inside the tent easily or you can fit 4 people in an emergency. Secondly, it is a lot of room inside. You can sit up easily and change or move around without disturbing you partner. You can store you packs and gear inside the tent easily or you can fit 4 people in an emergency. Thirdly, it is easy to get in and out of the tent without crawling or bending down to ground level like many small 2 person tents and the wide door opening allows great ventilation and visibility. Fourtly, it is simple and fast to set up and pull down. Maybe 3 or 4 minutes from start to finish at a guess. Lashing and adjusting the walking poles together took longer than setting up the tent! Fifth, totally waterproof material means easy pack up with no drying issues. Just flick off the water from the fly with a shake or two pack the tent up into the pod (the tent and insert fits easily into a large pod) and put it up the next night with a few drops of water on the fly. Six, lots of light comes into the tent so you can see easily. We have the spruce colour which has a pleasant feel to it. The tent is translucent but not transparent so you still have lots of privacy if you have a light on at night. Seven, the insert is awesome for Tasmanian conditions where leeches, mosquitos, biting march flies, flies, wet soil conditions are often the norm during the year. The ability to pack up the insert under the cover of the fly is so simple and quick it is genius! Lastly, it just feels nice and airy inside the tent, not clastrophobic like many smaller two person tents. The main disadvantages of the tent I can see are:- larger footprint means you may have limited site options in some areas. Two, no vestible means your gear has to be either outside the tent or stored inside, which is not really a problem as there is a lot of room inside. Three, the lack of a vestible may cause some issues in the snow or heavy rain getting wet whilst getting in or out. I think also the weak point of the design may be the zip if the tent is tensioned up too tight with the fly open ( which I did once before realising my error) The dyneema is brilliant- strong, light and waterproof ,we did not experience any condensation issues as the ventilation is excellent. The insert is also well made but the mesh is light and possibly prone to tearing when inserting the pole so you do need to be careful to align your pole with the reinforced cone at the top of the insert. I think with a little care this tent should last many years, the next big test will be in the high winds and snow but the numerous tie down points make me think it will work well. Overall I think the tent performed flawlessly and a couple of my trekking friends already have one on their 'to buy' list after seeing it in action. The big downer is the price in Australia, very expensive but I think worth every cent, especially if it lasts like I think it will, I won't need another tent for years.

Unfair to rate this without actually using it but with 50+ years of experience under tarps and pyramid style tents this is a very welcomed addition to this senior's bivy kit. It's now packed in a 2200 cubic inch pack that is at 19 pounds (no food and water). With 2-3 days of food is added going to be around 23-24 pounds making possible some fully contained bivys and one perfect survival pack if heading out in questionable weather. I'm used to an 8' x 8' foot-print which is perfect for 2-people on extended trips. Now solo - the Ulta-Mid 2 gives me similar square footage but at a 9' X 7' configuration which actually nice as it provides a bit more head space when your pack is placed at the foot of your thermorest. 7' wide it is still space for 2 people plus enough ... MoreUnfair to rate this without actually using it but with 50+ years of experience under tarps and pyramid style tents this is a very welcomed addition to this senior's bivy kit. This kit is virtually featherlite at 1.2 pounds (tent only). You just don't feel the weight. My old Chounard and BD Mega-mids (2) ran 3.5 pounds (8'x8'). A more recent Mega-lite came in at 2.5 pounds but a smaller foot-print at 7'X7' which made it harder in packs. This version at 2 pounds (with poles) is amazing given it matches the space provided by my older Mega-mids. A welcomed product for a guy who is getting up there in wisdom.

Two years in and still loving it

I use the half insert and the ground sheet. The set up options are fantastic. On a rainy night in Vermont I had two guests for dinner before I unloaded my pack and set up the insert for bed. It’s hard to beat on a cold windy morning you can do breakfast, load your pack and just about everything imaginable before tearing down the mid and facing the elements. Do carry a patch kit. A breezy night near Harpers Ferry on the AT gave me my first flying debris punctures. Still loving it two years in.

Versatile and spacious
20 March 2023

Spent several nights in NY's Catskills mountains and Bear Mtn. I like the flexibility that this tent offers which can be dialed in according to conditions. Most recently pitched on a lake shore which took 30-40 mph winds all night coming off the lake. I anticipated and used the extra guy lines taking into account wind direction. The tent took the punishment and wiggled about fairly noiselessly but stood tall and protected me well. I used bivy and ground sheet. The tent was pitched close to the ground, with no detectable condensation probably due to airflow from wind.

Hyperlite mountain gear blatanly lies about their tents.I bought this junk tent in Jan . 30,2018 and from the get go I found it to be considerably less roomy than advertised. The photos on their website are photoshopped. The dyseema fabric is not the strongest of any backpack tent. The zipper separated from the tent fabric after only 2 years of use. This is in no way a 4 season tent!
