Hollow & Semi-Hollow Body by Ibanez. Details:Ibanez goes old school with their take on traditional hollow bodied guitars. The AF55 Hollow Body Electric Guitar is a traditional arch top jazz guitar. The single cutaway hollow body features a sapele top, back sides. The flat finishes really accentuate the grain of the maple while offering a well-worn feel and aesthetic. The electronics feature a pair of open-coil Ibanez ceramic Humbuckers that'll dish out tons of smooth, warm jazz tones with bottom-end to spare from the neck pickup and high-end twang from the bridge pickup. The neck on the Ibanez AF55 is carved from Nyatoh into a comfortable, tapered profile which starts at a 20mm thickness at the 1st fret to 24mm at the 12th fret. The tapered neck will feel at home in your fretting hand. A bound Walnut fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays and jumbo frets will facilitate total ease of playability. The chrome hardware complements the old school vibe beautifully. Case not included.

I'd buy expensive stuff if I could but this instrument does everything a higher price one would do. I like to keep the volume low and the tone rolled back and I practice dry; not even reverb. When I want to I can get country; rockabilly; and blues tones with it. It'll do hard rock and metal but that's not me. It's not just a decent box that needs upgrades. It's a complete ready to go worth keeping for a lifetime instrument. There are things I might do if I had money to burn but nothing needs work or upgrade. This is the second one of these I've owned. I sold the old one and tried other guitars then came back and bought this one again and I'm happy. The fact that it's one of the lowest priced ones you can find of any quality belies the fact that it's a professional quality instrument. That's just my opinion but I've been playing for 55 years and have a little part time professional experience and graduated a conservatory.

The lack of shiny finish may be a factor in the tone that goes right through my body. My prettier better constructed guitars costing a little more and with better features and attention to detail don't have as much magic and I play this one almost all the time. So it seems to be consistently good, at least in that both examples were great. The neck is really nice - it just feels right (well, that's a personal thing, but it feels right for me). Great action right out of the box. Stays in tune. And wonderful tone at ANY price point. Gigged with this a week ago and everybody loved the sound and the look of the guitar. I was amazed at the incredible lows and highs - the range - from these pickups. I pretty much play in neck position. The bridge pup is very hot, and I can see rockers loving this as well. So something for a lot of people - can be a screamer or a nice jazz/pop ... MorePlayed one of these at a GC out of town and fell in love. My only issue is that, I don't exactly know how to say it, but the fret board felt like it could be a little more supple. By that I mean it is just a little dry feeling. The neck contour makes up for that and it is by no means a slow neck, but maybe just a little more wood is needed/maybe smoother finish on the fret board? I also like the satin finish, but would love it in gloss. Also, wish it had a real inlay on the headstock as opposed to decal, but those are things one can easily give up to get such a great guitar for a low price. This is an amazing guitar. Everyone who plays them seems to love them. I love mine.

Awesome lefty guitar

This is a beautiful hollow body guitar. I had been eyeing one for about a decade and when I saw this flat tobacco fade finish, I knew this was the one. I was debating between semi hollow and full hollow and don't mind the extra feedback I can get when close to and facing my amp. I mostly play emo/metal/pop punk tone music and this works pretty ok. The distortion while clear in the mids for the notes, the pickups or something doesn't let the tone be quite bright enough. I may have to mess with more setting on my amp. I mostly use the bridge pickup up to get that clarity, but ocationalt it is a bit biting so I switch to rhythm For my type of sound I don't use the neck pick up by itself. The floating bridge was a new thing to me. But after some reading and adjusting after removing the little packing foam it ships with, I think I have the intonation right. Lastly, I am still experiencing an occasional fret buzz or slightly muted note on the strings at the 12th fret. When played unplugged, it has a nice sound, almost the resonance of a banjo at times, and is a bit more reserved sounding that my regular acoustic.

Cool blues guitar
27 October 2019

I've always admired the old blues guys and their incredible ability to get great sounds from an old, inexpensive guitar. As a lefty, I have several expensive guitars but I've always wanted an old Kay, Harmony, or even an old Silvertone hollow body to play blues. Finding a left handed one of these is nearly impossible. Even though the Ibanez AF55 was not meant for this, I took a chance and I have been very pleased. I run my guitars through a system with a Fender Deluxe amp simulator and with a little more gain, the results are very cool. There are hundreds of great blues guitars out there but if you're on a budget and you want that old 50s "sittin' on the front porch on a summer day in Mississippi" sound, this might be the guitar to do it. Great hollowbody. Slight issue upon arrival.

The guitar arrived well packaged in good condition; there was a small issue but I will touch on that later.I have used an Ibanez ajd91 for about 12 years, and I love it. This guitar is not as nice as the ajd but serves a different purpose. For the price it is great. The action is decent. The pick ups are so-so, but you can still get some good jazz tones. It is ready to play out of the box if you aren't replacing the strings like I did-but don't forget to remove the packaging foam from under the floating bridge. Also, if you aren't used to floating bridges there isn't a manual provided to inform you how to set it up. Just double the distance from the nut to the 12th fret and place the bridge there. I had already purchased some flat wounds to replace them, but I can see how it would be a letdown for someone planning on playing stock strings.

Nice Guitar

Overall:I ordered this along with a more expensive Ibanez semi hollow body and the arrived at my door at the same time. I immediately replaced the strings on the AF55 to flatwound Chromes extra light gauge. Tuned her up and plugged in and was greeted with a fat sounding big box tone which pleased my ears. One thing about this guitar is it being a true hollow body like a acoustic is that you can feed this back very easily if you are not careful. It also has sympathetic notes and my main one is B. That is not a good thing and I found myself using a dedicated 15 band eq to minimize the feedback. Once that is done it sounds exquisite. Playing it with distortion is quite an adventure because this guitar reaches feedback even at low volumes and that will become useful ... MoreOverall:I ordered this along with a more expensive Ibanez semi hollow body and the arrived at my door at the same time. It is more at home with a nice clean setting though and can play blues, jazz, country and clean rock with ease. It is a jazz box first and its complex tones are right at home in that genre. I recommend this guitar who wants a quality full hollowbody for a ridiculously low price.

Surprisingly good guitar
12 December 2019

I bought this as a platform to work on. I like the unadorned look on any guitar. You will need to do some work on it. I had to polish the frets and also polished the finish.I like the antique violin look but prefer a smoother feel. The is easily done with light sanding(1200 grit) and polishing cloth. Surprisingly the action and intonation was good. I expected to replace the pick ups but (with adjustment) these pickups were fine. I suggest that you keep the pickups lower so that you can hear the acoustic nature of this instrument. It is for jazz/blues only. I may eliminate the bridge pickup at some point as I only use the neck pickup.

price / quality a winner
12 June 2020

after months of comparing, thinking, meditating, the purchase of this guitar became real. And what a great choice this turns out to be. Many guitars, more expensive, more innovative ones have been made, played. This model however brings back some basic. Ibanez has you enjoying a beautiful well build model for a very acceptable (low) price. The finish has super pleasant feel, the sound is acoustically more than 'just good'. The intonation is really well and can be nicely 'abused' due to the slightly rougher fretboard. Amplified, this instrument is warm, somewhat 'heavy' in the lower registers, which is in no way disturbing. It is amazing how much guitar you get for this price. A real winner considering the cost-benefit picture.
