The AZES40 features two Ibanez Essentials passive ceramic single-coil pickups and one Ibanez Accord passive ceramic humbucking pickup, with Ibanez' dyna-MIX9 switching system. Essentials and Accord pickups provide well-balanced tone and as well as versatility, so that guitar players can enjoy various styles of music with just one instrument. The dyna-MIX9 offers nine easy-to-access sound variations. It even simulates a humbucking sound from the combination of two single coil pickups, and can split the bridge humbucker to simulate single-coil tones. The AZES40's T106 tremolo bridge is equipped with comfort round Steel saddles. Its construction provides a wider range of height adjustment and ease of set-up. The screws are also less likely to stick out, leading to less stress on your strumming hand and better playing comfort. Another comfort-enhancing feature is the die-cast split-shaft machine heads. The die-cast housing offers protection from dust, as well as making tuning easy and smooth, while the split-shaft design makes it easy to change the strings.

I have several Strats and S-types, a few of which cost almost 10 times as much as this Ibanez. I bought it as a beater, maybe for traveling with or messing around in a backyard, perhaps modding it a bit. What a surprise in terms of both playability and sound. Other than putting higher-end strings, polishing the frets and oiling the fretboard (I do that to every new guitar), it doesn't need anything.. Even the pickups are really nice, and they're staying. I'd definitely gig with it without hesitation.

I am an advanced player of over 40 years. I bought this guitar from GC on a whim. Sight unseen. I took it home and got my whole world changed. I don't know how ibanez can afford to produce this guitar. It blows away everything else in that price range and above. The setup was ridiculously good and the ceramic pickups feel and sound like high quality alnico. Absolutely no fret buzz or dead nots and smooth as butter on the edges. I want so sell all my mim strats and buy more of these. It comes loaded with 10guage strings which are for advanced players in my opinion. Cheers ibanez !

It sounds amazing and looks beautiful too - I can't stop picking it up.I've spent more money on significantly worse guitars in the past, couldn't recommend it more for the price

Overall:Got this guitar in just a couple of days thanks to zZounds fast shipping policy. Opened the box to find a beautiful guitar with excellent fit and finish! Plugged it in and only had to bring it into tune a little bit before I could start jamming. I didn’t want to put this guitar down! No fret buzz, low action and good intonation right out of the box. Nice binding on the neck with absolutely no sharp fret edges! This guitar is billed as a starter guitar, but I’ve been playing for many, many years and this will be my main guitar. It does everything and does it just as good as an $1100 Fender, no joke. This guitar reminds me of the awesome Ibanez Blazer I had in the 80’s, but those are hard to find and more expensive now than this beauty. I’m giving Ibanez customer support a five star rating even though I’ve never had to use them (I own several Ibanez guitars), but I’m sure they are great to deal with considering the quality of the instruments they make. Buy this guitar! Buy it!!

Ibanez AZES 40….Another Home Run

Sound:The sounds of this guitar are fantastic with 9 different pickup settings and the toggle switch. I played it both clean and dirty. The 2 and 4 positions give you that Mark Knopfler clean solo tone. Also, the pickups sound very full and snarly through my Orange will the gain all the way up.The pickups have a really high octane sound. Don’t think that because they are ceramics that the resulting tone will be compromised. The most useful feature is the toggle switch. Depending on which position you are at on the 5-way, you can get Tele flavors, typical strat, and even some Brian May like tones. The body wood is quite resonant. And the maple neck with Jatoba fretboard are quite smooth and well finished. The hardware on this guitar are very good. And the maple neck with Jatoba fretboard are quite smooth and well finished. The hardware on this guitar are very good. The tuners are quite nice and function flawlessly. The split shafts make restringing a breeze. All components were snugly secure from the factory. The T106 trem bridge is very nice with its rounded comfort saddles. No grub screws sticking out, waiting to slice your hand when resting it on the bridge. The bridge is set up Decked. You can only dive on it, but the guitar stays in tune after a dive, and the string trees seem to be smooth, as well as the nut slots.Features:This guitar is so easy to use. The switches and pots function flawlessly. If there is a learning curve it is because there are so many tonal choices with the five way and toggle switches. This guitar was playable right out of the box. Even the action was low and the guitar was intonated right from the factory and the action was just a hair under 4/64ths at the 17th fret.Ease of Use:A well made instrument, the fit and finish is superb. No cosmetic or functional flaws. As far as for a beginner, this guitar should be a good one for the entire learning journey. It should last for many, many years to come with proper maintenance. The scale is a little shorter than a standard strat style guitar and a little longer than a typical Gibson. If I have any complaint, it’s that the frets might need to be polished a little. The frets seem to be level, but a little polishing will take them from smooth to smooth as glass.Quality:I have not had to deal with Ibanez directly, but if there is a problem, call up customer service and they can deal with an Ibanez rep quickly. I’ve done that before and had good results.Value:This guitar is the best looking of my three AZ’s. I want to get the other colors when they are available. At least the black one. I am going to use this guitar for bar jams and videos. I could use another guitar for this, as I have over 30, but these guitars are priced right to be what I need, and that’s a tool to make music with. And the AZES guitars are so versatile, and cost so little, why would I use anything else.Manufacturer Support:This guitar is the most bang, for so few bucks, in the Ibanez line. It is worth every penny. At $349.00 brand new, the AZES 40 kicks ass, and is a better value than a Squier Classic Vibe. Better frets and electronics, and in some cases better tuners and a better jack assembly. The Wow Factor:I have 9 Ibanez guitars, including the AZES 40 and two AZES 31’s ranging from $299.00 to 2K, and these are some of the best guitars I’ve ever played.Overall:This guitar was meant to attract beginner level guitarists, but this could be a great guitar for a pro as a main axe or backup. There are so many tones in this guitar.Out of the box this thing is ready to rock!

Ibanez has something here . . .

I am a professional musician that has been playing for almost 30 years. I echo the sentiment of all of the previous commenters by saying not only is this an absurdly great deal of value for money, but this is a great guitar period whether you are beginning or a professional. Pros: neck feel, fret work, pickups, variety of tones, easy to play, and overall looks. Cons: tuning stability with tremolo system and paint job at the neck joint in the back of guitar.

Ibanez really hit it out of the park with this one. I ended up playing one at a local GC on a whim and it changed the way Iook at guitars / Ibanez. I have been playing acoustic/electric guitar for about 30 years. This plays much better than my MIM and MIA Strats. The scale length, action, and pickups are all perfect. The pickups are "hot" and will distort much quicker under gain than most. I have bought a few of these, as my mind is blown of the quality at this price point. However, inspect you guitar well as quality control is probably not to the standards of a higher end guitar. Quality / Finish varies such as fret faces (some look professionally polished, others are dull/scratchy), paint flaws at neck joint / neck mounting scews (can see primer under paint), some ... MoreIbanez really hit it out of the park with this one. Bought this as my first guitar after much research. I didn't want to break the bank but wanted something with good reviews. Watched a lot of youtube reviews and wanted to go with this one. The workers told me for the features this guitar couldve easily been $600-700. I have been so happy with it so far. It seems to be able to play all genres. Can't wait to continue this journey!

Was looking for this guitar all over and every shop I looked at had them backordered til around October. CME had them listed as in stock so I called to confirm. The gentleman that answered confirmed they had them and mentioned it would be delivered to me in about 4 days if I purchased that day. 4 days later it was at my doorstep in pristine condition and sounding amazing. In terms of the guitar its self, the only negative I have really is that the low E has some fret buzz. This should be expected when buying most new guitars online and it isn't noticeable when playing through an amp at a normal volume. I love the HSS pickup configuration and the trem system works nicely. For a budget Strat-style guitar, the Ibanez AZ Essentials is tough to beat. Designed for Ibanez by Tomo Fujita (guitar professor at Berklee and mentor to John Mayer). Features a 5-way selector switch, as well as a 2-way "Alter" switch, which gives the user a total of 9 different pickup configurations for tone.Upgrading to locking tuners probably wouldn't be a bad idea.
