(213 reviews)

Ibanez builds guitars for all levels of players - from beginners to the most demanding masters of the instrument. Regardless of price, Ibanez always strives to offer the absolute best sound, style, and playability in its class. It all started in 1987, as the debut of the Ibanez RG was a milestone in rock guitar history. With its spartan look, supreme playability and versatility due to innovative specs, the RG made a big impact then, and is still evolving today. The Ibanez Genesis Collection brings back vibe of the "good old days" with precise construction by Japanese craftsmanship, proving that this iconic guitar has always led the rock guitar scene. A prominent feature of the original RG is the ultra thin Super Wizard neck - constructed of five solid pieces of Maple and Walnut for absolute rock solid stability to provide extra-smooth playing. With the classic Edge tremolo bridge, the most extreme sonic acrobatics can be fearlessly performed with confidence that the guitar will effortlessly return to perfect tuning. The original Ibanez V7, S1, and V8 pickups offer a wide range of sound and attack when combined with the 5-way pickup switch. Additionally, incredible tuning stability is achieved through the use of the Gotoh machine heads. Color: Purple Neon.

Wanted an RG550 since I first saw them in the '90s. Does not disappoint in any way. High quality finish for the money. Trem is better than the cheaper edge versions on some other mid-range ibanez. v8 and v7 pickups arent bad for off the shelf and unless you are fussy (like me) you wont need to change them, although they sound a little thin on totally clean settings. The colour is almost luminous, pictures dont give a true feel really, its almost like '80s luminous socks! Switch gear and pots are smooth and solid. The star of this instrument is the neck. Action was pretty good out of the box, just a smidge high for my liking but very playable. Frets are very large and allow a lot of fast finger work and accurate bends. Im finding myself nailing bends especially well. ... MoreWanted an RG550 since I first saw them in the '90s. Does not disappoint in any way. High quality finish for the money. Im finding myself nailing bends especially well. This neck is better than my s420, the scale length feels a little longer than the 420 (I havent looked up the specs) but there is plenty of room at the top to fully exploit all 24 frets; the 420 feels a bit of a squeeze right at the top compared. Tuners feel very solid and the locking nut is placed with precision; no noticeable pitch change when tightening the nut bolts. This is a very comfortable and usable instrument out of the box. Serious pro's will probably want a setup and the fret edges stoning a little.

Just took delivery today - it arrived in mint condition and the intonation was nearly perfect - only required a small adjustment on 1 string! The finishes on this guitar are beautiful - the purple color is deep & rich and the black hardware really compliments the overall look, I can tell that when stage lights hit it, the guitar will be stunning. Action was set very low and it has very minimal fret buzz - no need for adjustment. Ran it through all the paces using every effects pedal on my board both "clean" and "dirty." It sounds great with everything. After string-stretching I could gig with the guitar just as it is now.The Ibanez pickups surprised me both with their power and clarity. Yes this thing shreds - that's why I bought it, but ... I was totally unprepared as to how great it sounds clean. Has a better "dumble" sound than my Strat. Can play it distorted with the selector set to both the middle and bridge pickup without any "muddiness." Neck is VERY comfortable and fast - you don't have to worry about sweaty hands sticking to it at hot gigs. The shape allows easy access to the upper frets with little effort. Output on the humbuckers is good - I could turn down the drive-settings on both my OCD Overdrive and the ProCo Rat and not lose anything in tone. Ergonomics are great, I don't find myself hitting knobs with the right hand and the tremolo arm stays put in all positions. This guitar is LIGHT and perfectly balanced. The pickups are quiet when using compression combined with dirt, without extra humming or other noise during rests. Will probably upgrade the pickups, but for this price point, the instrument was better than I expected and sounds better than 2 of my other more-expensive guitars already.I will be playing this thing a LOT and I bought it for gigging, jamming, practicing. Am very happy with this purchase!

I have had the guitar for a couple of days now and can say after playing it almost non stop. The build quality is excellent I haven't found any flaws yet and will have to say that this particular guitar is absolutely flawless. I have gone over and over the guitar and there are literally no flaws. When I received the guitar which was 3 days earlier than promised I unpacked the guitar and went over it with a fine tooth comb. Flawless fit and finish. Everything is exactly as it should be. I always find something on guitars when ordering online like at least some minor flaws or even major ones that are deal breakers. I've been comparing this guitar to my original 550 and it does have some differences. The neck is slightly thicker than my old one and the volute on the neck is there. 5 piece neck is different from the one piece with scarf joint. These are all excellent improvements to the original the other thing that I noticed was the fretboard edges are rolled which is awesome! I love it. I actually like it better than my old 550 which is blowing my mind. The only complaint is I really wish it was offered in a hardshell case. But I'm in the mindset that all guitars over say 500 bucks should have at least a gig bag. Thanks zZounds for getting me a great guitar super fast!

Guitar itself is great, but the sharp fret edges
16 March 2023

I had to return this guitar for the bad sharp fret edges for a couple of times since it obviously bothers playing, but I recently bought it again since the spec of this guitar was amazing. Of course, the fret edges were rough and sharp again. I called up to Ibanez USA warranty dept, and they said it is NOT covered under warranty. So , I called up to 2 local guitar center, and they said that they'll repair ONLY IF with Platinum setup services purchased ($150 value). Also, the one from Gilroy, CA guitar center who looks like GM said that I should repair by myself since this guitar is like under $1000 which is very ridiculous. He should look out to the world, and learn how other new guitar brand companys make the guitars. No one can see this kind of old and ugly sharp ... MoreI had to return this guitar for the bad sharp fret edges for a couple of times since it obviously bothers playing, but I recently bought it again since the spec of this guitar was amazing. Hands down the best guitar i've ever played

Overall:My first purchase from zZounds, decided to try this red rg550. I was a bit worried because this is my first Floyd. I have a handful of other guitars but none of them play like this. Everyone upgrades these pickups, im not going to, they are hot to me, there is a great amount of sustain and they are metal machines as far as im concerned its that old school metal shred tone I want but they are versatile. The guitar was in 99 percent perfect condition, the bridge pickup was raised too high and someone testing it out had caused a slight cosmetic tear in the ribbon of the pickup, a few pick marks on the plastic. Stellar condition, the neck is flawless, the trem is top of the line with gotoh hardware stays in tune even with the gnarliest dives. Beinga Floyd noob I had to watch a few videos on how to tune it but ive got the hang of it. The first time I didn't tighten the nuts just a hair enough and lost my tuning when I dived, I tuned and tried again now I have the hang of it. Anyway, aside from the Ibanez edge trem system the neck itself is like butter. I mean any solo or riff I could think of just felt effortless and easier. Like I said hands down the best guitar ive ever played and totally worth every penny. Will come back to zZounds, thank you for the great guitar.

This is my first premium/intermediate guitar after using sub £300 ones for a number of years. The first is the bolt on neck means that despite the thin Wizard neck the highest few frets aren't as comfortable to reach as with a neck through guitar. The second is that Ibanez edge bridges require proprietry intonation tool which is substantially more expensive than a floyd rose one. But that's an extra £50 with a £900 guitar i guess? All in all an excellent guitar I would recomend to anyone wanting to upgrade to something in the £1000 range who plays rock and metal music (although, as I said it does have some musical diversity with the selection of 3 pickups.)

I bought an Ibanez RG550-DY Genesis on 23 May 2023. I hopped into PMT store in Norwich to buy an Electric guitar, and found this legendary reissue on display. The neon colour of the guitar caught my eye instantly. I played the guitar for awhile and came into an instant decision to buy it. On the same day I placed an online order and received the same guitar which I tested at PMT Store in Norwich. For this kind of a price, this pure Japanese bred guitar is a clear steal. I am so happy with the guitar eventhough it comes without a hardcase or a gig bag. Because, it gives the feeling that the guitar manufacturer has spent the whole money for the production of the guitar without splitting it up for a gig bag. If the manufacturer provided a gig bag for the japanese guitar it could also depreciate the value of this legendary reissue. Seems like they've thought about alot the appeal of the guitar in the market. This guitar has got almost all the prestige guitar features and fully deserve to be rested on an Ibanez hardcase which is an additional payment. Subsequently I bought an Ibanez MR500C hardcase to give the maximum protection for the guitar. The clean tones are heavenly and dirty tones sounds great when plugged into my Fender Mustang IV 150w combo.

Review of Ibanez RG550-DY Genesis Collection Desert Sun Yellow
19 August 2023

Just bought an Ibanez rg550 from GuitarGuitar & I am thrilled with both GuitarGuitar & the Ibanez. I used the chat line on their website to ask a few questions prior to my purchase & they responded within a minute. I placed the order online & received my guitar the next morning. I did have a general question about the edge tremelo after receiving my guitar & so I called the support line. The phone was answered really quickly & my query was resolved to my complete satisfaction. I can recommend both GuitarGuitar & the Ibanez rg550. Both are excellent

Review of Ibanez RG550-RF Genesis Collection Road Flare Red
18 December 2023

Absolutely love this guitar!I’ve been lucky enough to acquire some nice guitars in my time, PRS, Gibson, Fender. Recently I got a charvel which sent me down the super strat route. After doing the usual hours of internet research I settled on a Ibanez RG550.Needless to say I was not disappointed and it has quickly become my favourite guitar!Fit and finish on my RG seems perfect and came set up very well, I lowered the action slightly and swapped the tuning pegs for lock in ones to make string changes easier. Pick ups sound good to me but I may swap them out for some DiMarzio ones with red covers!

Yes but I would need to know how to maintain the FR tremolo.
26 March 2020

I bought this guitar because I wanted a super Strat and a more aggressive sounding pickups. The guitar was in impeccable condition when I unboxed it. Everything was perfect with the guitar when I received it. I didn't check string height and all that but it felt good to play. This was my first FR tremolo guitar, before purchasing it I did a lot of research on how to maintain the tremolo system and I was confident to deal with it. Upon arrival, I tuned up the guitar, locked the nut, used the fine tuners, and I was good for a couple of days. Then it was a little out of tune, stretched out the strings and tuned it up again. I was good for a couple of days. It was slightly out of tune again so I repeated the string stretching process and tuned up. I was good for a couple of days. It was slightly out of tune again so I repeated the string stretching process and tuned up. As soon as I tuned up and started to play, it was out of tune. It kept going flat every time that I tuned it, the tuner would say it's perfect, but I strum a chord and it's a little bit flat. I started noticing in standard tuning the string tension was getting tighter and tighter but it wasn't in tune then I tuned to half a step down. Then I noticed the tremolo was going deeper into the body, it was never like that before. Finally, I'm like I'm done with this tremolo system, if it was a cheaper guitar, I would of worked with it but I wasn't going to take chances with expensive guitar and I don't want to go to the guitar store every time I change strings to have it set up. The FR system is a great evolution for the tremolo system but it's not my cup of tea. The pickups sounds was good for me but it didn't sound so great coming out my modified DS-1. I ended up getting a Les Paul Jr with a very simple bridge and a mean P-90, go figure, lol. Another thing I couldn't get along with was the string spacing on the guitar, it's a 17" radius and doing single note picking was awkward. Either way I'm giving the guitar 5 stars because it's a great guitar but not for me.
