Good Starter Guitar, but needs adjustment out of the box

I am a very experienced guitarist & I bought this as a travel guitar and also as a starter guitar for my grandchild. For the average buyer and/or young user, this guitar will require some changes for it to be immediately useful. Specifically, out of the box, many frets will buzz and the guitar will require string heights to be raised & bridge/intonation adjustments to become playable. I would also recommend changing the strings for a set of .11's, as the OEM .10's will not stay in tune well. Once those adjustments can be made, the appearance and the playability of the guitar is really pretty good, especially for a youngster or for travel. The little guitar looks awesome! From the Pickups perspective, they are good enough for a young novice player. It has a five way switch and even coil splits the PUPS. However, for someone who knows the difference and wants tonal quality, you will find little change in tone amongst the 5 PUP settings, with maybe the exception of the Bridge PUP. As a guitar "snob" I have changed the Pickups, Pots, Capacitor, and Nut to make this a really good little guitar. I also have a Squire Mini, which is also a good starter/travel guitar. The Squier requires some of the same string & intonation adjustments out of the box too, but the Squier pickups can at least get a pretty good Strat sound without changing out the Pups, I also think the Squier has a better feel to it that the Ibanez. But the Ibanez looks COOLER!Great starter & Travel guitars though!

Four stars? For a 'cheap' short scale Ibanez electric? Well, yes, within the genre that this guitar belongs to, namely entry-level, affordable guitars, it is a great buy. I personally prefer Ibanez guitars and this one reminds me why... For the money, Ibanez is hard to beat; I also have a Ibanez Gio Mikro bass that I am also happy with.I ran through the setup on the guitar but it really did not need much if any. The stock humbuckers sound good and are very quiet (no humming or other unwanted noises). I have not been one for Strat/Tele style switches as it's just not my thing, so this would be the only thing I don't like. However for those that use one, this one works just fine.

I have been playing guitar for many years and have played a variety of guitars but never played a 3/4 scale until now.I must say I am very satisfied with the quality and playability of the Ibanez GSR200BLWNF. I only had to make minor adjustments to make it sound as good as possible. I thought this guitar was going to be like other small guitars, having issues with intonation but it actually played quite well right out of the box. I would recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a good starter guitar for young aspiring musicians, or as an excellent travel guitar for adults. I usually play my Fender strat but have been playing this guitar quite a bit since receiving it. It sounds great and plays almost as well as my Fender. Great guitar for the price.

JUNK. Unplayable.

Overall:I purchased this for my 9 yo after reading the reviews. Tuned it, but would not play in tune. Called CS and told them I would bring it to a luthier to have it set up before sending it back. I really wanted this to be all that it was boasted to be. Paid $65 to have it set up. Although it was in tune on open and 12th fret, it still would would not play any chord in tune. Luthier said the 1st-3rd frets could be spaced incorrectly. Sent it back. zZounds gave me $35 credit towards another guitar. The machine heads were awful as well. I purchased the Kramer Baretta Special instead and I have to say that is a great guitar for the money.

My boy cut his finger on the frets
23 January 2022

Overall:I ordered this with next day shipping to give to my boy for his birthday. Everybody stood around to watch him “play” his new guitar and within seconds he sliced his finger on the frets. I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years and have had countless guitars. This thing has the worst frets I’ve ever felt. From a 75 dollar junk guitar to a 3000 dollar les Paul. I’ve never experienced something this awful. I’m going to have to bring this to the local music store and ask them to repair it just to avoid more INJURY to my kid.

Nice little guitar to use as a travel guitar
4 June 2018

I was needing a guitar to use when traveling, but also wanted a short-scale guitar to add to my arsenal. This little guitar does the job just fine. It has a good feel to it, and plays well after doing a little bit of work to it. You'll probably need to cut the string slots in the nut down lower as they're too high from the factory. This causes some of the strings to get pulled a little sharp when you fret them. After filing them down it eliminated the pulling sharp issue, and pretty much eliminated the issues of it going out of tune as it was played. Also, when I replaced the strings (I put Elixir 10's on it) I used 0000 steel wool to buff the frets smooth, and oiled the fretboard as the wood seemed a little dry. I may still add roller string trees to it, but it's doing pretty well now on the tuning after the work I did on it. Everyone seems to think the tuning machine heads are what causes the tuning issue, but I believe it's actually the nut slots. I may still replace the tuning heads if I decide I want something a little more smooth, but the stock ones work fine.

I played classical guitar for over forty years before I started to go deaf.Went back to my roots - bought an electric and electro-acoustic and hit blues, lead and arranging standards on the acoustic. Then lost the use of my left thumb for a year (God doesn't want me to play guitar - I think he's reserved me for the lyre section).I got use of the thumb back several years ago (I'm now 68!) but muscles had atrophied and I don't have the strength for barrés.Thought I'd try this baby guitar. Chords at the top end very difficult since it's very cramped but OK up to about the 12th fret.I keep trying the full size guitars and hope I'm going to be able to cope with them.If I do manage to get get back to the 'big boys' I'm not sure sure I'll ever play this one but no matter - if it gets me there it'll have been worth every penny!

This is a beginner only guitar, but with a little work...
23 February 2021

Overall:We bought two of the Mikro guitars. A GRGM21 and a P.Gilbert Model. We expected at this price that some changes would be needed; and we were right. The nut has to be replaced. The original has so much wrong with it that I really don't want to type a paragraph explaining. It's made of bad material and you will never get to tune without replacing it. Consider the nut a "model" and there should be instructions with the guitar saying to replace it soon as poosible. There's gonna be some buzz from some high frets but that was an easy fix. There a a couple tricks to getting the intonation right but it can be done. (hint: move the saddles all the way forward) Hope this helped.

VG out of the box and excellent with some work.

Excellent for what I was expecting from a very inexpensive short scale guitar. The neck and frets were pretty good and it sounded more then OK through a Fender Mustang amp. However, it should go without saying that this can only be a starting place for this guitar. As virtually any guitar under $1500 or so, and many over, it needed the frets leveled and re-crowned to be perfect. The pots are OK, but better ones with a better cap is an improvement, as are new pickups. I also changed to locking tuners, although the original ones did hold it in tune. OK, so bottom line, what I am saying is, this is fine for a beginner, child, or adult wanting a short scale guitar. To go further then beginner, make some typical changes and get fret work done and you will have a guitar worthy of your talents. Now, this vs the Fender Squire Affinity Strat. There is a style difference with this one coming with 2 humbuckers instead of 3 single coil pickups. This also has a full normal width neck. The Affinity has a narrower neck which, if your fingers are fatter or for a beginner that can be annoying. Strings are closer together on the Affinity, but the neck being narrower is good for smaller hands overall. Each starts out pretty darn good and each can be made to sound excellent with a bit of work and some cash. If you want the short scale, it is well worth it. IMHO I have one of each.
