External hard drives are very much in trend, and rightly so, as they can be transported at any time and connected to another device. The ICY BOX 3640SU3 offers ample storage, as it can operate up to four hard drives of any size simultaneously. The robust aluminum housing not only looks stylish but also efficiently dissipates the heat generated inside. A temperature-controlled fan helps to ensure quiet and effective air exchange. Installing the hard drives in the IB-3640SU3 is quick and easy, requiring no tools. Thanks to HotSwap, the used storage devices can even be quickly exchanged while in operation. Environmental considerations are also taken into account: the ICY BOX features a sleep mode that reduces power consumption to a minimum. It supports all common Windows versions from XP as well as MAC OS X. Connectivity is available via fast USB 3.0, allowing transfer rates of up to 5 GBit per second, or eSATA. The hard drives are then available as individual drives (JBOD = "Just a bunch of disks").

Works OK as long as you leave the front door open.:(My unit worked great initially but data transfer slowed down to an unusable speed (a few Kbps) after an hour or so due to over-heating.The rear exhaust fan is more than adequate, however there is no air-intake when the front door flap is closed. After permanently removing the front door (and adding some internal baffling) the unit performed solidly.I did note thought that however hot the unit got, the fan speed did not automatically change as the documentation suggests. It can be changed manually though...The RAID configuration is simple though, all done from the front panel buttons, no setup software required. To conclude; easy to use and good value, but poor thermal design.

Purchased this unit for media storage purposes and configured it as Raid 10, using 4 x 6 TB HDD's. Seems to work well with my Dune media player and also with a laptop and desktop running Windows 10. The hibernation feature is useful as, providing the mains adaptor is always on, the unit will power up automatically when a connected computer or media player is switched on.

I bought this to expand the storage of an HP Microserver Gen 8. Connected via USB 3 the transfer speeds max out at around 110MB/s. I've got it set up in individual mode so that each disk gets a drive letter in Windows and i'm using Stablebit Drivepool to pool the disks together. In the mode, with all disks spinning it uses a pretty constant 29W
