In all the years that I have been a film photographer I had never shot Ilford Delta 100. Until now. Keith Sharples bought a couple of rolls from this very boutique and gave one of them to me to see what I thought of it. It sat in my fridge for a month or two and I finally got around to loading it into my OM-1 and heading out for a wander in my local countryside. I rarely shoot 100 speed film, I'm an HP5 guy, but Delta 100 was easy to get along with. I can see why Ilford advertise this as their professional grade film, It doesn't have the best exposure latitude and you really need to be accurate with your metering, but when you get it dialled in it shines. Like other reviewers, I found this film to be high-contrast, sharp and low-grain. Because it's so high-resolution, the photos have an almost digital quality at times. I can understand that this certainly has its uses! However, I do like a grainy black and white photo, so I would tend to go for a cheaper option unless I really needed this strong sharpness and detail.I used a Nikkormat FT2 with a 28mm Nikon f-mount lens, as well as orange and red Cokin filters.

I had been very keen to try this professional quality film, so what would I load it into? Canon A-1? Minolta XG-M? I decided to give it a go in my 1960s Balda Super Matic with a broken, built-in Selenium Cell meter. Sunny 16s in a woodland park with dark shadows and bright highlights isn't easy or always successful, but the latitude of this film saved a few shots. Contrast, tonality and lack of grain make for very pleasing results and this film has all of that.

Last time I really played with film, Delta was one of those newfangled fads which obviously weren't really needed with the likes of FP4 already available. But, it obviously stuck around so, yesterday, I finally got round to shooting my first ever roll of the stuff.It's sharp. Probably sharper than my old Contaflex with its 1950s Tessar glass.It's accurate. The somewhat overcast day and old, weathered, stone were captured perfectly perfectly, with the film not imposing anything on the pictures that wasn't there.It's almost grain free. On 2.5x3.7k scans from 35mm you JUST start noticing what may be grain, or may be the limit of scanning, at 100% crop.It's also surprisingly tolerant on exposure. Shooting a lot of medium and large format, I kinda got used to working with a ton of resolution. 35mm doesn't work that way of course. There are subjects where the slight softness and grain of HP5+ in 35mm works really well, but there are also times when I want something sharper and more detailed. Delta 100 fits the bill perfectly. Really love it for macro work, and subjects where having the extra detail really helps the image succeed.I prefer Delta 100 to TMX 100 because it's about 95% as sharp, but comes out looking less clinical. This is not your traditional Ilford HP or FP film. This is a more modern "tabular grain" film. So rather than the traditional moody, grainy images you get extremely sharp, effectively grain free photographs. This is not always the look I go for, but when I do I choose Delta 100.This film is great for landscapes where very detail is captured, and also every nuance in the shades of grey. If the sky is overcast, that will be reproduced if exposure is correct. For portraits, this will reproduce facial features and hair texture perfectly, again with a look very different from the more traditional B&W films.Perfectly complements older films like FP4+ and is happy to be pushed a couple of stops. Sample images shot with Praktica BX20S, CZJ 35-70 lens.
I have used Delta 100 in 35mm since soon after its release. I have, hanging near me as I write, an 11x14 studio portrait I made with it. you can make out the grain in some light-toned areas on close inspection, but image has lovely, creamy tones. With proper development, at box speed or EI 50, developed in Ilfotech HC or other fine-grain developers, the highlight rendering is just superb. I use only two films, this and HP5-Plus. They cover everything I need, from 35 to 4x5.
The finest grain film and best gray pallet I've ever used in 35mm film, especially when used with Ilford DDX developer. The manufacture's EI of 100 is right on as I did the Zone System tests. It is the only 35mm film I use having tried Kodak TMax in the past. I use it with my trusty Nikon F3.
Are you a cowboy on the plains of Wyoming with your weather-worn M6 around your neck shooting in noon-day sun in July? If so, shoot some Delta 100. The contrast is so balanced and beautiful. Incredible shadow detail. This film is expressive. I shot a bunch out west and was so happy with the results. I'm not a cowboy sadly. And even more sad, I really don't shoot 35mm film anymore.
I've developed 2 rolls of Delta 100: first in R09 @ 1+100; and the second in Perceptol 1+3 The first was much better than expected with a full range of tones. Exposure had to be correct or detail was lost in the shadows. In Perceptol there is a fine grain, a full range of tones with plenty of detail in the highlights and more detail in the shadows than with R09. This is my favourite film for landscape.
